Welcome to Marymount SUMMER

Welcome!We are proud and excited to be offering another fun-filled summer at Marymount. You can expect some new changes this summer, like wonderful new course options and the ability to be more flexible with your schedule. The great news is that all of our popular classes from years past are back, and we’re offering inspired new courses as well! This summer, with morning courses that can be taken one week at a time, you can truly design your summer at Marymount to fit your schedule. Whether you are a student who would like to strengthen your foundation in academics or explore a completely new field of interest, we have the courses to meet your needs. We look forward to seeing you on campus this summer!Sarah Jallo, Director of Summer Programs

Registration and TuitionTo enroll, download the registration form at summer.mhs-la.org. Mail the registration form along with the Emergency/Medical form and your payment to Marymount High School, Attn: Summer Programs, 10643 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90077. Checks should be made payable to Marymount High School. Visa and Mastercard are also acceptable forms of payment. Write your information on the registration form or call the Summer Programs office to make your payment. Tuition for each course is listed on the following pages under the course descriptions. Students enrolling in both Periods 1 and 2 for a full five weeks receive a discount of $100. Enrollment in afternoon courses for all five weeks, also receives an additional $100 discount.

A student may withdraw without penalty prior to June 1. After that date, tuition will be refunded less a processing fee of $150. Once classes commence, tuition is forfeited. Please note that after Monday, June 11, classes with low enrollment may be canceled. If a class is canceled, students in that class will be contacted and may either choose another class or receive a full refund for the canceled class.

BooksSome courses require the student to purchase textbooks and other supplemental materials. Books are purchased through the website, MBS Direct (www.mbsdirect.net). After entering the website, select the appropriate class to display book information. For standard shipping rates, we recommend ordering by June 1.

ConductStudents enrolled in summer classes are expected to abide by all Marymount standards with regard to behavior. Students may only be on campus if they are scheduled in a class and must remain on campus between classes. Students must be picked up no later than fifteen minutes after the conclusion of their last class. Marymount is not responsible for students who are not in class during the school day. Failure to cooperate with these standards may result in a request for withdrawal.

Dress CodeClothing is casual and should be appropriate for an academic setting. No bare midriffs, short shorts, or short skirts.

AttendanceRegular attendance and punctuality are expected for all classes. All planned absences should be listed on the Planned Absences form and are subject to approval. If academic credit is being requested, full course credit cannot be granted to students who have more than two absences. *School will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.

Introduction to AlgebraThis course is designed for students entering grades 7-9 who would like to improve their mathematical comprehension and skills. The course systematically reviews and reinforces all of the essential skills necessary for success in Algebra I. Many of the concepts and skills normally taught in the first quarter of Algebra I will be covered to help facilitate an easier transition to Algebra: operations with numbers, fractions, decimals and percents, the order of operations, the metric system, polynomial arithmetic, techniques for solving linear equations, and word problems.Grades 7-9 - Fulfills admission requirementJune 25 - July 27: $750

Introduction to GeometryThis class is designed for students who will be taking Geometry in the fall. It is an introduction to the deductive logic and critical thinking skills necessary in Geometry. Students will work with triangles, quadrilaterals, general polygons, and circles. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of right triangles and the area and volume of plane and solid figures with a particular focus on the geometric concepts included on standardized tests such as the PSAT and SAT. Students will develop mathematical problem-solving techniques as well as the study skills and test-taking skills necessary for future success in high school math.Grade 9 and current MHS studentsJune 25 - July 27: $750

Accelerated Algebra IThis course completes Algebra I for incoming 9th graders who need to reinforce their foundation in Algebra. Students should only enroll if the Math Department at Marymount has recommended or required them to take this course in order to qualify for Geometry in 9th grade. Special areas of study are: operations with polynomials, solution of linear inequalities, graphing of linear equations and inequalities, operations with radicals, and the analysis and solution of word problems.Grade 9 - Fulfills accelerated placement requirementJune 25 - July 27: $750

Introduction to the Visual Arts*Students will be introduced to a variety of different art mediums week by week, including but not limited to the weekly topics listed below. Writing for High SchoolThe emphasis of this course is on analytical essay writing. Students will write descriptive, persuasive, and expository essays based on their understanding of assigned class texts. Writing for Middle SchoolThis course will help students establish, practice, and polish the writing skills they need for middle school and beyond. Topics will include journaling and personal essays, responses to reading, summarizing, formulating and supporting an argument, conquering pesky spelling, grammar, and punctuation “demons,” avoiding plagiarism, writing a thesis statement, an introduction to the five paragraph essay, and much more.Grades 6-8June 25 - July 27: $750

Introduction to FrenchThis course is designed for students with limited or no experience with the French language. Students are introduced to the culture and language of France with an emphasis on proper pronunciation and everyday conversation. Visual Arts IThis course acquaints the student with the elements and principles of design through drawing, painting, clay, and mixed media. The basic elements of realistic drawing are introduced enabling the student to create solid three-dimensional forms. Design-oriented painting is stressed, concentrating on color and shape relationships. Advanced Visual Arts IAP Studio Art Portfolio Development Students work to further develop their drawing and painting skills. Emphasis is placed on creative thinking, problem solving and building an aesthetic vocabulary. Students experiment with a variety of media and styles while working on subjects such as still life, landscape, portraiture and editorial illustration. Projects are introduced with demonstrations as well as master examples.Current MHS studentsOne semester creditJune 25 - July 27: $800

Accelerated Spanish IThis course is designed for incoming students who have had at least one year of Spanish and who wish to begin high school at Level II. Students should enroll if the Modern Language Department has recommended or required this course based on the placement exam results. Project Runway***Learn to design your own clothes,accessories, and decorating items from the ground up. We’ll take a trip to Joann’s Fabrics so you can select your own patterns and materials. Our course will culminate with a visit to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising to see how the professionals do it. Let your creativity run wild. Engineering & Robotics**Use your creative mind and the laws of physics to create scientific masterpieces. In this course, you will be experiencing hands-on engineering and robotics to build bridges, towers, rockets, and your own robot! P.E. for Sport & Recreation (may be taken Period 1 or Period 2)This P.E. class is designed to offer a fun and functional experience while earning a semester of P.E. credit. This course is open to any student in grades 6-12 interested in developing skills in a variety of activities, including both individual and team sports. Students will experience the fun and joy of staying active and getting fit, leading them to discover how physical activity can always be enjoyable. Theatrical Performance and ProductionIn this course, students will put on a show from start to finish. The students themselves will design and install the costuming, set, sound, and lights, in addition to taking a role in the play. The final day of class will culminate in a performance of the play, open to friends and family. Book Lover’s Blockbusters*Did you stay up all night reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows the day it was released? Did you convince your parents to let you watch the midnight movie premiere of Breaking Dawn? Have you read all the books on the Teen Best Seller List? This class will take a closer look at Young Adult Lit phenomenons, celebrating what we love about the stories but also taking a closer look at the writing, symbols, and literary merit of these modern favorites. You may already love these books, but you will emerge from this course as a scholarly expert in them as well. Marymount 101Welcome new Sailors!This course is designed for girls joining Marymount in the fall of 2012. You will become acquainted with other new students, as well as Marymount’s campus, faculty, administrators, mission, and traditions. We’ll do team-building exercises, scavenger hunts, and other fun games to get you familiar with your new community. You’ll be the most well-versed new student on campus! We will also visit UCLA and Westwood to show you all the wonderful resources within walking distance.Incoming MHS students only$200

Fit for LifeIf you’re looking to tone those muscles and increase your endurance or just learn new ways to get fit, this class is the right choice for you. Each day will be filled with physical activities that are suited for all types at any level. And remember, you get out of it what you put into it! Classes will utilize Marymount’s facilities, including the weight room and pool, in addition to activities that may include yoga, zumba, and aerobics classes.Grades 6-9$200

Digital Photography IThis course is designed to introduce students to the funny and somewhat confusing gadgets on their cameras. Students will learn what the basic and advanced settings do and how to use them to control the final look of their photographs. Understanding technical information such as shutter speed, aperture and image quality are the things that enable a photographer to make necessary artistic decisions. Rules of composition are highlighted to assist in creating photographs that depict a unique and personal vision. Daily photographic assignments will provide the opportunity to practice the understanding of topics covered in class. Each student must bring her own camera.Grades 6-9$200

Healthy VegetarianThere’s more to vegetarian meals than pasta and salad. Many vegetarians live on a combination of these, plus french fries. This class will teach you the principles of a balanced vegetarian diet. We will cover basic cooking skills and vegetarian staples from soup to nuts for the whole family to enjoy. Grades 6-9$230

Mock TrialOrder in the court! This is for all the future lawyers out there. Learn about the structure of a trial while actually taking part in one. Students act out the roles of lawyers and witnesses and participate in a mock (pretend) trial. Make objections, swear to tell the truth under oath, and present your case to a judge. This class will unveil many of the mysteries of our legal system, and each participant will have a new appreciation and understanding of their individual rights and obligations. This class will lay a wonderful foundation for anyone who is hoping to participate in Mock Trial in high school.Grades 6-9$200

Beginning DanceOne of the most common forms of joyful self-expression is demonstrated through the art of dance. The novice dancer has many styles from which to choose a favorite. This class will allow students to sample the popular forms of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Proper warm-up techniques and the importance of stretching will be taught. Students will complete the class with an increased sense of self-confidence and body awareness as well as a passion for this wonderful form of self-expression.Grades 6-9$200

Laptop 101This class will focus on growing students’ abilities in using “everyday” programs on the computer. We will be diving into Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Students will produce a different document each afternoon. We will learn how to find and insert clip art, tables and graphs, and borders and shading. We will also learn how to produce a Powerpoint presentation for any topic that may come their way in the coming school year. Bring your own laptop or use one of Marymount’s.Grades 6-9$200

Musical TheatreIn this class students learn to become comfortable with singing, acting, and moving simultaneously in a performance setting. Through solo, duet, and group exercises and performances, the students will learn how to act a song, move naturally on stage, and react with their fellow performers in the environment of the song. Grades 6-9$200

Public SpeakingPublic Speaking can be fun! You can learn to speak in public with confidence and have fun in the process. Team building skills, collaboration, and group exercises will be used to help you hone the skills needed to become a polished public speaker in any forum. Getting the audiences attention, keeping it, and developing the art of persuasive speech making are all components of this course. Even some fun with “stand-up” comedy will be included in this workshop!Grades 6-9$200

Exercise in LALos Angeles is a physical fitness mecca and provides access to every type of work out imaginable. Students in this class will travel off campus in the Marymount vans to sample some of the most popular classes and activities available. From Burn 360 to Pilates, the Bar Method and the Santa Monica stairs, students will have the opportunity to experience new fitness options and determine their favorite way to stay fit!Grades 6-9$250

Digital Photography IBuild on the concepts learned in Week 1 or take it for the first time! This course introduces students to the basic controls on their cameras and how to use them in order to capture beautiful images. This week will focus on black and white photography, emphasizing the importance of highlights and shadows. Students will learn to ‘paint with light’ as they begin to see the importance of black, white and varying shades of gray in a photograph. Rules of composition will also be highlighted to further develop their photographic vision. Students will be encouraged to capture different images including an environmental portrait and a self-portrait. Each student must bring her own camera.Grades 6-9$200

Creative WritingThis course will immerse students in their own self-exploration and imagination through personal journaling, poetry, short stories, and dramatic monologues. Learn writing exercises to get the creative juices flowing and discover or refine your talents.Grades 6-9$200

Basic BakingNo meal is complete without that sweet bite of dessert. This class will delve into the wonderful world of baking. Proper techniques for measuring, mixing, and cooking will be covered. Topics for the week will include cookies, cupcakes, fruit desserts, brownies, and bars. Each student will receive a personalized apron and recipes and will take home samples of their baking each day.Grades 6-9$230

Digital Photography IIThis course is a continuation of basic photography classes from Week 1 and/or Week 2, offering students an opportunity to delve deeper into their understanding of technical information and further develop their personal vision. Beyond the technical information, students will use the rules of composition coupled with one point perspective in architecture and nature to enhance their images into beautiful works of art. Students will also learn about the fun world of close-up photography using the macro mode on their cameras. By the end of the course, students’ application of technique and vision will enable them to turn snapshots into photographs with intention. Each student must bring her own camera.Grades 6-9$200

Science Extravaganza -Life Science / AnatomyGet hands-on in this amazing week of exploration and discovery! First, analyze hair and blood samples to solve the mysterious death of Marymount’s own Dean of Students! Discover the wonders of the human body by taking your friends’ vital signs. Study anatomy by conducting a real dissection. Learn about plant structure in UCLA’s famous botanical gardens. Try all this and more in Marymount’s own venture into the fascinating world of science!Grades 6-9$200

Theatre GamesThis is the perfect class for aspiring actresses to hone their acting chops! Primarily through the use of improv and given circumstances, students will learn to think fast on their feet, adapt in a performance setting, and use imagination and creativity to create numerous characters and objectives. Cooking 101Fundamental cooking techniques are a mystery to many. Having an understanding of a few basic skills will turn you from a clueless cook into a respected chef. This crash course will lay the ground rules for success in the kitchen. Knife skills, mixing techniques and simple recipes for soups, salads, chicken, meat, pasta, and quick desserts will be presented. Each participant will take home a sample of the day’s repast to share with family members. This class will form the foundation for understanding recipes and how best to put a meal together. Grades 6-9$230

History’s MysteriesHuman history is full of mysterious incidents where the facts are murky and the published accounts of the event are in question. Travel back in time to study and solve some of the biggest enigmas of the past. From the untimely death of King Tut to the disappearance of the Romanov family to who really shot JFK, students will use historical documents and first-hand accounts to formulate their own conclusions about conundrums from long ago. Whether you are already a history buff or just love to solve riddles, this is the class for you!Grades 6-9$200

Babysitting & CPR CertificationBabysitting the neighborhood kids is a rite of passage for many teenagers, allowing them to start that all-important first savings account. Take this opportunity to learn the skills necessary to make you one of the best! The “Child and Babysitting Safety” program offered by the Health and Safety Institute will be presented to provide a comprehensive introduction to babysitting for all students. Formal certification by the American Health and Safety Institute in both Basic First Aid and CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrilator) is also included and will allow you to address any emergency with aplomb. Certification cards in both the CABS course and First Aid/CPR course willbe distributed at the end of the class.Grades 6-9$200

Adobe PhotoShopPhotoShop is a one-week workshop where students will begin with some tips on taking good digital pictures. Students will use this knowledge as they begin basic PhotoShop techniques of downloading images, correcting lighting and quality, and resizing images. Students will then complete this workshop by using all these techniques along with layering to create works such as posters, cards, and/or CD covers.Grades 6-9$200

Rock On!Learn to play the guitar! This course will include how to strum, play chords, read tabs, and accompany yourself. We will learn songs by Green Day, Neil Young, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and many others. Bring your own acoustic guitar that is in good playing condition, either steel string or nylon (classical). If you do not have a guitar and are interested in taking this class, please contact Marymount Summer Programs.Grades 6-9$200

Adobe InDesignStudents will explore the tools of InDesign, creating professional-looking journalistic layouts and graphic designs for magazines, newspapers, yearbooks, and more. The class will cover type and font, color, headlines, photo editing and placement, and both modern and traditional design elements.Grades 6-9$200

Rock On!Learn to play the guitar! Build on your skills from Week 4’s class or take it for the first time! This course will include how to strum, play chords, read tabs, and accompany yourself. Beat Boys at Chess!Playing chess is a time-honored activity for all game lovers and intellectuals who want to hone and use their strategic thinking. Beginners to more advanced players of chess can learn the basics of play, the movement of pieces, and different strategies of the game, including opening, middle, and end game strategies. There will be an in-house tournament on the last day.Grades 6-9$200

American Sign LanguageThe third most used language in the United States, American Sign Language, was developed in the early Nineteenth Century through the efforts of Thomas Gallaudet. ASL is a language that is distinct from English and uses hand shapes, palm orientation, movements of the body, arms, and hands, as well as facial expressions to communicate meaning. This introductory class will provide a fundamental knowledge of sign language as students begin to communicate in a non-verbal fashion through the use of the signed alphabet and standardized signing. Don’t miss this chance to “speak” non-verbally!Grades 6-9$200

Science Extravaganza -Physics / ChemistryGet hands-on in this amazing week of exploration and discovery! We’ll use science just like the pros do. Study physics by building a safe haven for a falling egg. Learn what household grocery items create explosive chemical reactions. Make your own goo, and much, much more! Try all this in Marymount’s own venture into the fascinating world of science! Topics covered this week will differ from Week 3, providing a new experience for science lovers.Grades 6-9$200

Be Active! Get Fit! Have Fun!Students will stay on Marymount’s beautiful campus and enjoy five days of cutting edge fitness classes. Have you ever tried Zumba, the new Latin-inspired dance-fitness program? Would you like to try yoga, exercise boot camp or weighted hula hoops? This is the class for anyone who wants to be more active and feel great this summer. Participants will also have access to the Marymount pool.Grades 6-9$250
