To Cathy Roy, Darius Frowner and Justin Long,

It is with much love and gratitude that we say goodbye to MPAC and thank you for truly making it our second home for the past 8 years. From age 10 as Evan and Patrice in 13 the Musical to Joseph to Hairspray to Les Miserables to Mary Poppins to Disney World to the ultimate experience singing at the White House for TV and for countless shows through classes, camp and years of performing arts company you have taught us an incredible amount both on the stage and off. As we go off to college please know that we will forever have MPAC memories imprinted in our hearts.

Love,Justin Chimoff and Amanda Fletcher and the entire Fletcher and Chimoff families

Mary Poppins takes place in and around the Banks' household, somewhere in London at the turn of the last century.

Page 6: Mary Poppins Program Book

From the Director:

Anything can happen if we recognize the magic of everyday life.

This is something that Author P.L. Travers understood when she published her first book, Mary Poppins in 1934. This was the tale of the mysterious nanny who teaches a troubled family to appreciate the important things in life. It went on to become one of the most recognized and beloved stories of all time.

When the film was released by Disney in 1964, audiences saw live actors with animated creatures, characters jumping into sidewalk drawings and a magical Nanny flying above the London skyline, and they were hooked! The film earned 13 Academy Award nominations and won in five categories. In 2004 Disney Theatrical partnered with Producer Cameron Mackintosh to bring the beloved nanny to life on stage. This re-imagined version combined elements from the books and movie with brand new material enriching the story with details and dramatic themes.

The story of Mary Poppins is one that lies deep within all of us. We can hum the catchy tunes, quote the clever lyrics, recognize the characters and those who have portrayed them. Mary Poppins is a magical character who teaches us to “see the good in everyone. By teaching the Banks children to open up their awareness to the joy and hardships of others, she is able to help them teach their parents a lesson about what is most important in life.

It has been such a pleasure to get to know the inside of this beautiful story and discover the depth of it’s themes, characters and ideas. I have had the joy of collaborating with a fantastic creative team, cast and production team. This show has been an enormous undertaking with magic, flying, huge musical numbers and an epic story to tell. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for helping to bring this to life!!

We would be nowhere without our audience and we thank you all for your tremendous support. We hope to not only entertain you on this journey through the magical world of Mary Poppins but to inspire you to see good in everyone, look past what you see and remember that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

Performances like Mary Poppins are why they created words like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! We are so excited and proud of the work that the cast and crew have done getting this performance ready to take the stage. Mary Poppins continues our tradition of memorable Spring productions, which also include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray and Les Misérables. Mary Poppins is the ultimate example of the amazing work that MPAC’s education department has done in our community and throughout New Jersey. Did you know that over 600 children participate in Performing Arts School classes annually? Or that MPAC awards over $5,000 in scholarships to these classes, so that no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay for a class? Or that over 40,000 children and their families experience MPAC education-related events? The list of accomplishments is

extensive and continues to grow.

This past year, six students in our program had the amazing opportunity to participate in Broadway at the White House, a full-day seminar in which they had the opportunity to learn from some of the most famous names in show business, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gloria Estefan, Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison. The event was hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Our dedication to arts education goes beyond merely teaching someone to sing, dance or act. It is focused on inspiring creativity and improving communication skills. The skills gained in arts education go far beyond the stage – they inspire confidence, cooperation and teamwork – skills essential no matter what path your child may follow. On behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees of the Mayo Performing Arts Center, I would like to congratulate Cathy Roy, our Education Director, and Director of Mary Poppins, her entire creative team, the production crew and especially our wonderful youth performers on a job well done. We’re all so proud!

Best wishes,

Allison LarenaPresident and CEO Mayo Performing Arts Center
