MARK’S MESSAGEThis issue of Newsbreak highlights many of the meaningful ways people support our hospital. From our dedicated Aid Association who recently presented a check for $165,000 that will directly support patient care, to our employee donors who choose to support their hospital, to the local businesses and individuals that donated auction items or made a gift at the Celebrating Survival Luncheon in support of the Gerrish Breast Care Center. Gifts like these represent our donors’ belief in our proven ability to care for our community, and their support enables us to continue to do so. For that I am so grateful.

This October, Anna Jaques received a gift from an employee that is so meaningful, it embodies the dedication and compassion of our workforce, and exemplifies how every individual employee can touch the lives of so many.

Lois Anderson, a long-time employee whose career at AJH spanned 41 years (from 1967 to 2008), spent more than half of her life and the majority of her nursing career caring for the patients of Anna Jaques Hospital and the community.

Sadly, Lois passed away last December after losing her battle with cancer. In her will, she left her beloved hospital a gift of a quarter of a million dollars – the largest donation ever given by an employee of Anna Jaques. With this selfless and generous $256,000 donation, she is entrusting us to continue our good work.

In her roles in the Emergency Department and Pre-Admission Testing, Lois interacted with literally thousands of patients and families. She brought them comfort, held their hand, and cared for them as if they were her own family – which is how every patient at Anna Jaques deserves to be treated.

A gift of this magnitude provides much-needed financial support to our hospital but the thoughtfulness behind it is what really makes it so significant. It also speaks to our culture and the confidence she had in her colleagues and friends here. Lois’ gift reaffirms the importance of supporting our hospital because every dollar raised here stays here to support our patients, even as we join a new health system. And it fills me with gratitude to know that Lois had many choices as she decided how to best spend her hard-earned money, and she chose us. Now, her legacy of caring can continue to live on for decades to come.

We will formally recognize Lois Anderson’s gift in the near future, but for now, I hope you’ll join me in appreciation of her life, work, and tremendous dedication to Anna Jaques.

What a beautiful and selfless act. I’m without words. Lois has touched so many lives, both patient and provider, in her years with us. May she be an example to us all through the way she lived her life and the exceptional manner in which she cared for her patients. -Dr. Domenic Martinello, Emergency Department

My family lived next door to Lois for over 25 years. Whether coming home from surgery or simply scraping a knee, she would be at our doorstep to make sure we were okay. She simply loved her job, the hospital, and her community. - Kimberley Foulkes, Senior Vice President, Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank

OCTOBERCongratulations to our October Shining Star, Melanie Ayotte, Physical Therapist. Melanie has received praise from patients and colleagues noting her knowledge, skill, and diligence in achieving positive outcomes for her patients. Colleagues also acknowledged how she’s gone above and beyond in developing the AJH Aquatic Therapy Program.

Katie Mahoney, PT; *Melanie Ayotte, PT; Lynda Kuhne, Director of Rehabilitation Services; Anita Huot, PTA; and Michelle Couture, PT (Bravo to the group for wearing pink on Friday in October. See pg. 7 for more).

For years, the Shining Star of the Month program has recognized employees based almost exclusively on positive Press Ganey patient survey comments. While this has been a great way to celebrate our clinical staff, the program was less effective at recognizing Anna Jaques employees who are not directly involved in patient care. Thus, Human Resources has revamped the Shining Star program to be inclusive of all different types of AJH and SAGP employees – clinical, administrative, per-diem and employees who work at off-site locations.

The program now invites directors, staff, and patients to nominate employees who set the standard for: patient care, attitude and commitment, interpersonal skills, work performance, and personal traits. The coveted President’s parking spot is still given to the Shining Star, along with a gift certificate and celebration in the employee’s department with colleagues.

Contact Human Resources at ext. 1035 to learn more. Find a nomination form on the AnnaOnline homepage.

HAVERHILL MEDICAL OFFICES OF ANNA JAQUES HOSPITAL OPENS ON PRIMROSE STREET

Anna Jaques Hospital announced the official opening of Haverhill Medical Offices, a 30,000 square foot, state-of-the-art medical office building at 600 Primrose Street in Haverhill, MA. With easy access off exit 51A (Route 125), just minutes off I-495, the building offers public transportation through the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (Bus Route 13), and free and ample parking. Children’s Health Care was the first tenant to move in on October 16th.

Haverhill Medical Offices of Anna Jaques Hospital was established out of a commitment by the hospital to create a medical destination for health care, right in the City of Haverhill to improve access to key services. The building will bring much-needed services to the greater Haverhill community, including primary care, women’s health care, pediatrics, blood draw services, sleep lab, breast care, general surgery, and other physician specialty services.

Children’s Health Care began welcoming patients in the new building, having relocated from 2 Water Street in Haverhill. AJH Blood Draw Services opened the week of October 30th and is now open to the public. Women’s Health Care (relocating from 2 Water Street) and Pentucket Medical Associates are expected to open in early December, and other Anna Jaques specialists are now scheduling patients for November, including the Gerrish Breast Care Center, Seacoast Surgery, Atlantic Vein Institute, and AJH Sleep Lab.

“Our tenants can’t wait to open their doors to patients at this state-of-the-art facility that offers accessibility and convenience to the residents of Haverhill and surrounding towns,” said Mark Goldstein, President & CEO of Anna Jaques Hospital. “We’re not just building a building in Haverhill; our intent is to improve the health of the community by bringing high-value health care even closer to home.”

Murphy and McManus was the hospital’s partner and developer of Haverhill Medical Offices of Anna Jaques Hospital. Visit www.ajh.org/haverhill for more information.

Mary Ann Abbott, President of the Aid Association, presented a check to President & CEO Mark Goldstein, and Chair of the Anna Jaques Community Health Foundation Board Trey Burns in the amount of $165,000 at the AJH Aid Association Annual Meeting on October 19th. Funds will directly support patient care and hospital capacity-building projects at Anna Jaques.

The Aid Association’s success is attributed to annual events like Great Chefs’ Night, the AJH Gift Shop, the beloved bake sales and plants sales, the art display and sales program, and the Holiday Arts & Craft Fair, to name a few. These events also reflect the important role that the Aid plays as they bring together local businesses, community leaders, hospital supporters, and philanthropic individuals in support of its community hospital.

At the meeting, Mary Ann Abbott passed the baton as Aid Association President and welcomed Patricia Mansfield

as the next president. Patricia has been a longtime supporter of Anna Jaques and served on the Anna Jaques Community Health Foundation Board from 2013-2017.

The meeting also recognized retiring Aid Association directors including longtime Treasurer, Nancy Thurlow, welcomed new members, and introduced new officers: Patricia Mansfield, President; Joyce Enderle, Vice President; Mary Beth Orlando, treasurer; Meg Foster, Recording Secretary; and Ellen Andrews, Corresponding Secretary.

“Mary Ann has been an unstoppable force at the helm of the Aid Association. In her three years as president, the Aid has raised close to $500,000 which has directly impacted programs and technology at the hospital. We thank Mary Ann for her leadership and warmly welcome Patricia to the role,” said Mark Goldstein, President & CEO.

See pg. 10 for upcoming Aid Association events and visit www.ajh.org/aidassociation for more details.

LISA WALSH, CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE, HONOREDIN YWCA TRIBUTE TO WOMENCongratulations to Lisa Walsh, Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), of Women’s Health Care, on her induction into the YWCA Academy of Women at the YWCA of Haverhill’s 28th Annual Tribute to Women Luncheon on October 26th. Lisa has been a nurse leader since 1994 at Women’s Health Care and has been described as the “heart and soul of the midwife practice.”

In Lisa’s nomination letter, Dr. Steven Mollov shared, “Lisa started the midwife practice at Women’s Health Care from scratch. Her enthusiasm for her work shows up in the way patients feel about her. She goes out of her way to help, whether by coming in on a day off to help orient a new midwife, or offering her cell phone number to a patient whom she feels needs extra support. Her disposition to her patients is always uplifting and her attention to detail in her charts knows no equals. She is the embodiment of what a midwife should be and what a new midwife should strive for.”

Anna Jaques and the Institution for Savings proudly co-hosted the Celebrating Survival Luncheon & Silent Auction with the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce on October 26th to community leaders, local businesses, and breast cancer survivors. Kathy Porter, RN, Patient Navigator of the Gerrish Breast Care

Center (GBCC), welcomed and thanked the audience who were then treated to a program with special guests, playwright Lisa Rafferty, well known through The Momologue” comedy series, Sue Tabb of MAGIC 106.7 and Dana Marshall of 92.5 the River. As printed by Daily News of Newburyport’s article, “Breast cancer survivors find healing in humor”:

Breast cancer is no laughing matter but playwright Lisa Rafferty knows from experience that laughter can have some pretty serious healing powers…

Rafferty and her guests, 92.5 The River radio host Dana Marshall and Magic 106.7 radio host Sue Tabb — both of whom are also breast cancer survivors — shared witty takes on their experiences with the disease and performed select scenes from Rafferty’s play, “The MOMologues: Pink Ribbon Overdose,” which she wrote with a group of friends after her diagnosis 10 years ago.

With their stories, the trio took a humorous perspective on many of the challenges dealt with during and after breast cancer treatment, including the discomfort of wearing hospital johnnies and adjusting to hair loss and other complications of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. And then there’s the adjustment to the new reality of post-cancer life.

The luncheon raised close to $5,000 for the GBCC through a silent auction and donations made by attendees to the “Comfort Fund” to support GBCC patients currently battling breast cancer.

FLU SHOT REMINDER

HEALTHY COOKING DEMO

The hospital is actively preparing for flu season and encouraging all staff to receive their flu shot as soon as possible. The vaccine takes two weeks to develop protective antibodies against the flu. Last year, AJH achieved its goal of 96% of all staff vaccinated and we hope to achieve the same or better this year. To protect our patients and ourselves during flu season, everyone working at Anna Jaques – including all of administration, department directors, employees, medical staff, volunteers and students – must be proactive and comply with the Influenza Vaccination Requirement Policy.

Patients rely on their care providers being vaccinated and not exposing them to influenza. Symptoms of the flu do not show up until 24-48 hours after becoming infected. By getting vaccinated, you can help protect your patients, yourself, and also your family at home from getting the flu. Contact Occupational Health at 978-834-8190 to learn more.

FLU POLICY: Employees and volunteers need either to receive the vaccine or wear a mask at all times at work (except breaks) once the start of flu season has been identified. If you receive the vaccine elsewhere you will need to provide documentation for your employee health file. There are a few staff who do not receive the vaccine. Their decision is a personal and/or medical one and staff is expected to be respectful of their decision.

ATWELLNESS AJH

After the incredible success of the 17-week Weight Watchers program at Anna Jaques - with participants losing a cumulative 623 pounds! – enough employees have signed on to enable the Weight Watchers @ Work group to continue. Meetings are on Wednesdays in the Higgins with weigh-ins from 3:45-4:00pm followed by the Weight Watchers meeting from 4:00-4:30pm.

On October 20th, the Nutrition Department offered healthy samplings of a Mediterranean Quinoa Salad and Turkey Harvest Burgers and gave out recipe cards as part of the Employee Wellness Seminars hosted by the Human Resources.

FRUIT & VEGGIE CHALLENGEAnna Jaques will host a Fruit & Veggie Challenge starting November 13th.
