MPA ratings were undertaken yearly since 2008.

MPA ratings starting 2009 were done

independently w/ LGU lead persons and

evaluated by the Network Secretariat and CI

(iwas daya! :)

Majority of those rated have reached only up to

Level I or II.

Among those rated, 7 of 13 (or 54%) are in Level

II, while only one sanctuary is in Level III.

No MPA has reached Level IV

General perceptions

High awareness about MPA;

High awareness about MPA benefits;

Almost all respondents indicated that Fish Density,

Biomass and diversity improved within MPAs;

MPA management body inactive ; no BRAFMC, no

MPA management council;

Decrease in illegal fishing in MPAs and even in

municipal waters (e.g. dynamite fishing, cyanide);

Issues about encroaching commercial fishers (outside,

local);

Need to maintain boundary markers;

Need to sustain IEC;
