Mariachi Reyes del Oeste with Maestro José Hernandez Marcia Neel, Music Education Consultants, Inc. Mariachi Suerte, Denison Middle School Ruben Newell and Patti Bekkerus, directors Sponsored by West Music Mariachi Reyes del Oeste Formed in 2012, Mariachi Reyes del Oeste is the Denison Community School’s top mariachi. The founding members are primarily freshmen, who started Denison’s first school mariachi, Mariachi Picoso, as eighthgraders in 2011. They have performed at three state educator conferences in Ames and Des Moines, as well as accepting an invitation to perform at the National USDA Lab facility in Ames, Iowa, last fall. He is the first mariachi musician to have arranged, composed and conducted for numerous international symphony orchestras. His platinumselling Mariachi Sol de Mexico became the first mariachi ensemble to be nominated twice for a Grammy. It has been well documented throughout the world that Hernandez and his Mariachi Sol de Mexico are not only responsible for setting a new standard for all mariachi ensembles today, but also for immortalizing this wonderful, passionate music. Denison  High  School’s  

Marcia  Neel     Marcia  Neel  is  recognized  as  a  leader  for  her  creative  approaches  to  curriculum  design  and  implementation.  The  most  successful  is  Clark  County  School  District’s  standards-­‐based  Mariachi  Program  instituted  in  Las  Vegas  in  2002  with  four  instructors  teaching  250  students  and  now  staffed  by  eighteen  full-­‐time,  mariachi  educators  teaching  over  3,000  students.  Marcia  is  lead  author  of  ¡Simplemente  Mariachi!,  an  instrumental/vocal  method  series  for  mariachi  students  and  educators.  A  former  MENC  Western  Division  President,  Marcia  now  serves  as  president  of  Music  Education  Consultants,  Inc.,  a  consortium  of  music  educators  working  with  school  districts  to  foster  the  growth  and  breadth  of  school-­‐based  music  education  programs.    

 The  Monarch  Band     The  instrumental  music  program  in  Denison  has  had  a  long  tradition,  dating  back  to  the  first  band,  which  was  formed  at  Denison  High  School  in  1918.    Today,  over  350  students  are  enrolled  in  instrumental  music  in  grades  6-­‐12  in  Denison.    The  program  is  directed  by  Patti  Bekkerus  and  Ruben  Newell,  with  6th  grade  lesson  assistance  from  Marsha  Mezger.    The  student  members  of  the  Monarch  Band  have  a  wide  variety  of  performance  opportunities,  and  take  pride  in  the  program’s  diversity.           Patti  Bekkerus  and  Ruben  Newell  are  the  band  directors  for  Denison  Community  Schools.    Mrs.  Bekkerus  received  her  Bachelor  of  Arts  degree  from  Central  College  and  has  been  teaching  instrumental  music  for  26  years,  including  19  years  in  Denison.    Her  current  teaching  duties  include  6th  grade  band,  7th  grade  band,  8th  grade  band,  

DMS  Jazz  Band,  Middle  School  Marching  Band,  mariachi  and  6-­‐8  lessons.    She  is  currently  the  middle  school  honor  band  chair  for  southwest  Iowa,  as  well  as  Past-­‐President  of  the  Southwest  Iowa  Bandmasters  Association.    Mr.  Newell  received  his  Bachelor  of  Music  degree  from  Iowa  State  University,  and  is  in  his  13th  year  teaching  instrumental  music,  including  4  years  in  Denison.    His  current  teaching  duties  include  the  Denison  High  School  Concert  Band,  two  jazz  bands,  pep  band,  the  Monarch  Marching  Band,  mariachi,  and  all  9-­‐12  lessons.    Both  instructors  are  members  of  IBA  and  are  active  clinicians  and  adjudicators  in  southwest  Iowa.    Mrs.  Bekkerus  and  Mr.  Newell  are  also  staff  members  for  the  Southwest  Iowa  Honor  Marching  Band.    For  more  information  on  the  Monarch  Band,  visit  them  on-­‐line:  www.MonarchBand.org.
