June 30). New memberships will be prorated after

the badge to the receptionist.
Use Good Judgment
Participants assume the risk of taking part in all activities. The Mt.
Juliet Senior Activity Center is held harmless from all claims
resulting from taking part in any activity at the Senior Center or
by participating in any offsite activities sponsored by the Center.
Participant Code of Conduct
Any participant whose behavior infringes on the rights of other
participants and/or staff, volunteers or instructors, could result in
participant being asked to leave the center. Any concerns about
the center can be expressed to the elected membership advisory
council representatives or directly to the Center Director.
Inclement Weather Policy
The Mt. Juliet Senior Activity Center utilizes the Wilson County
Public Schools Inclement Weather Policy to determine its weather
policy. MJSAC will be closed if the Wilson County Public
Schools are closed due to weather conditions; all meals, activities,
classes and trips are cancelled. If schools delay opening or close
early, the Center will open or close accordingly.

Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels (MOW) still needs kitchen volunteers daily and
also drivers to deliver to home bound clients. If you can help,
please contact our OnSite Manager Lisa Cook at 615.758.2777.
She also wishes to thank those who have volunteered since the last
newsletter.

NOTE TO ALL MEMBERS: If you are assisting in set-
up or take down of the main room, please be sure that
the table wheels are UNLOCKED before you move the
table. Relock the wheels when the table is in place.
Cologne/Perfume Please be careful to not “overdo”
your use of fragrances when coming to the Center. We
have several actually many folks who are highly
allergic to many fragrances. Please be considerate in
your usage. Thank you!
Receptionists Thank you to Colleen Decourval who
joins us as our Thursday afternoon receptionist, and
to Karen Szachnitowski who will be a “floater”. We
still need a permanent Thursday morning receptionist
as well as other “floaters” to cover the desk while our
wonderful receptionists take a break or are ill. Please
see Pat Garrison for more details.

Kitchen/Cleaning Help
We could use some additional workers in the kitchen
for preparation, serving and clean up for Monday and
Friday “InHouse” Lunches.

Volunteers are the hear tbeat of an organization
like MJSAC. There is no way that our limited num-
ber of staff could produce the great programs and ac-
tivities that our members enjoy without assistance
from volunteers. Please consider volunteering for any
of the many opportunities available. See the sheets in
the front hallway.
A warm welcome to Mona Tissue who is our new
Programs & Activities Coordinator. Mona is, of
course, not new to MJSAC as she has been a very
devoted volunteer to the Center. We are happy to
have her on staff!
FOOD SAFETY TRAINING
Thank you so much to those below who participated
in the Food Safety Training Course in February. The
training was conducted by Jennifer Udulutch, TN
Department of Health. All will receive a certificate
and be able to aid in the preparation and serving of
food at the Center.

“The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation
is to cover service members and veterans
touched by war with comforting and healing
Quilts of Valor.”

The foundation began in 2003 with a dream of its
Founder Catherine Roberts. Her son was deployed
in Iraq, and she felt that a quilt was the perfect sym-
bol of comfort to him and to others who served our
country. From the beginning, she had definite ideas
about standards of excellence for Quilts of Valor.
Her thoughts:

I knew a Quilt of Valor had to be a qualitymade
quilt, not a “charity quilt.” A Quilt of Valor had to
be quilted, not tied, which meant hand or machine
quilting. Quilts of Valor would be “awarded,” not
just passed out like magazines or videos.
A Quilt of Valor would say unequivocally, “Thank
you for your service, sacrifice, and valor” in serv-
ing our nation in combat.

The first Quilt of Valor was awarded in November
2003 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to a
young soldier from Minnesota who had lost his leg
in Iraq.

Since that time, over 212,000 quilts have been
awarded to those who have served our country, and
the Quilters of the Mt. Juliet Senior Activity Center
are very proud to now be an official part of this
unique effort.

The Office for Older Americansis working to provide older consumers and their families with the tools and
information they need to protect themselves from frauds and scams. Scams that target older people occur
every day. Some of the most popular ones are addressed below:
One common scam known as the imposter or “grandparent scam” might be decorated with a special
plea, a story of a relative in trouble who desperately needs money to fix a car or get out of jail or get
home.
The ruse known as the IRS scam takes on a vicious new twist with a grinch on the phone threatening an
elder with being arrested and going to jail for unpaid taxes or a fake debt.
There is an increase in false or imposter charities, which sound identical to the real ones. The pitch is
wrapped in sympathy inducing requests for donations.
These scammers may even scour the internet and social media sites looking for a special connection to your
life, such as a family member or community connection, to get you to trust them so you’ll be willing to part
with your hardearned money. Here are a few tips:
Before offering your help to someone who claims to be a grandchild (or other relative/friend), be sure to
telephone your family to verify that the emergency or urgent request is genuine.
Beware of a caller who insists on secrecy. Never allow anyone to discourage you from seeking infor-
mation, verification, support and counsel from family members, friends or trusted advisers prior to mak-
ing any financial transaction.
Take the following precautions to make sure your charitable donations benefit the people and organiza-
tions you want to help. If a caller claims to be from an established organization such as a hospital, chari-
ty, or law enforcement agency, look up the number of the organization independently and verify the
claim before sending money.
Ask for detailed information about the charity, including name, address, and telephone number.
Then, call the charity directly. Ask if the organization is aware of the solicitation and has authorized the
use of its name. The organization’s development staff should be able to help you.
If you have received a letter from the IRS stating that you owe taxes, call the IRS directly at 1800829
1040 for information. The IRS will neither call to demand immediate payment, nor call without first
mailing a bill. And, the IRS does not require you to use a specific payment method such as a prepaid
debit card nor will they threaten you with arrest for not paying.
