The fifth Sunday of Great Lent (March 31, 2019) is called

the Sunday of the Judge. The message of the day teaches us

with the parable of the widow and the Judge. This parable

comes to us in the Gospel of St. Luke (Luke 18:1-8). The

parable tells the story of a widow who repeatedly came to a

judge, who neither feared God nor respected man, and pled

for her rights. For a long period of time the judge refused to

act, but in the end, he fulfilled her request, to put an end to

her continuous appeals. Otherwise, he feared that she would continue to return indefinitely.

After telling this parable, the Lord assures everyone, that if a man as corrupt and unfair as this judge

decided in favor of the widow, then God surely would judge in favor of his own people and grant the

requests of all those who submit to Him through prayer. This parable exhorts us to always and continually

pray, as prayer symbolizes the soul’s eternal striving and thirst for God. The parable also contains an

appeal from Christ. After telling the parable, Christ says: “But will the Son of Man find faith on earth

when He comes?” In His words, Jesus gives a reference to the Second Coming, and sadness and anguish

are felt in the Lord’s remark. It is truly painful for the Savior that many people may be subject to just, yet

cruel judgment, instead of becoming the inheritors of the Kingdom of God.

The Holy Gospel according to Luke 17:20-18:14

Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of

God would come, Jesus replied,“The coming of the kingdom of God

is not something that can be observed,nor will people say, ‘Here it

is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your

midst.”Then he said to his disciples,“The time is coming when you

will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not

see it.People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.For the Son of

Man in his daywill be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.But

first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so

also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in

marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.“It was the

same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.But

the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.“It will be just

like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions

inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.Remember

Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.I tell

you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.Two women will be

grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”“Where, Lord?” they asked. He

replied,“Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give

up.He said:“In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people

thought.And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice

against my adversary.’“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear

God or care what people think,yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice,

so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’ ”And the Lord said,“Listen to what the unjust judge

says.And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he

keep putting them off?I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of

Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus

told this parable:“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax

collector.The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—

robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I

get.’“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast

and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home

justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves

will be exalted.”

Երբ Փարիսեցիները հարցուցին իրեն. «Աստուծոյ թագաւորութիւնը ե՞րբ պիտի գայ»,

պատասխանեց անոնց. «Աստուծոյ թագաւորութիւնը չի գար դուրսէն երեւցած բաներով: Եւ պիտի

չըսեն. “Ահա՛ հոս է”, կամ. “Ահա՛ հոն”. որովհետեւ ահա՛ Աստուծոյ թագաւորութիւնը ձեր ներսն է»:

Աշակերտներուն ալ ըսաւ. «Օրե՛ր պիտի գան, երբ դուք պիտի ցանկաք տեսնել մարդու Որդիին

օրերէն մէկը, բայց պիտի չտեսնէք: Ու եթէ ըսեն ձեզի. “Ահա՛ հոս է”, կամ. “Ահա՛ հոն”, մի՛ երթաք

եւ հետամուտ մի՛ ըլլաք: Որովհետեւ ինչպէս փայլակը՝ երկինքին տակ մէկ ծայրէն փայլատակելով՝

կը լուսաւորէ մինչեւ երկինքին տակ միւս ծայրը, նո՛յնպէս պիտի ըլլայ մարդու Որդին՝ իր գալուստին

օրը: Սակայն պէտք է որ ինք նախ շատ չարչարանքներ կրէ ու մերժուի այս սերունդէն: Ի՛նչպէս

պատահեցաւ Նոյի օրերուն, ա՛յնպէս պիտի ըլլայ մարդու Որդիին օրերուն ալ: Կ՚ուտէին, կը խմէին,

կ՚ամուսնանային, ամուսնութեան կու տային, մինչեւ այն օրը՝ երբ Նոյ մտաւ տապանը, ու ջրհեղեղը

եկաւ եւ կորսնցուց բոլորը: Նմանապէս՝ ինչպէս Ղովտի օրերուն ալ պատահեցաւ՝ կ՚ուտէին, կը

խմէին, կը գնէին, կը ծախէին, կը տնկէին, կը կառուցանէին: Բայց այն օրը՝ երբ Ղովտ դուրս ելաւ

Սոդոմէն, երկինքէն կրակ ու ծծումբ տեղաց եւ կորսնցուց բոլորը: Նոյնպէս պիտի ըլլայ այն օրը՝

երբ մարդու Որդին յայտնուի:Այդ օրը, ա՛ն որ տանիքին վրայ է եւ իր կարասիները՝ տան մէջ, թող

չիջնէ՝ զանոնք առնելու. նմանապէս ա՛ն որ արտին մէջ է՝ թող չվերադառնայ: Յիշեցէ՛ք Ղովտի

կինը: Ո՛վ որ ջանայ փրկել իր անձը՝ պիտի կորսնցնէ զայն, իսկ ո՛վ որ կորսնցնէ իր անձը՝ պիտի

ապրեցնէ զայն:

Կը յայտարարեմ ձեզի. “Այդ գիշերը եթէ երկու անձեր մէ՛կ մահիճի մէջ ըլլան, մէկը պիտի

առնուի ու միւսը մնայ. եթէ երկու կիներ միասին աղան, մէկը պիտի առնուի եւ միւսը մնայ. եթէ երկու

մարդիկ արտի մը մէջ ըլլան, մէկը պիտի առնուի ու միւսը մնայ”»:Անոնք պատասխանեցին անոր.

«Տէ՛ր, ո՞ւր պիտի ըլլայ այս բանը»:Ան ալ ըսաւ անոնց. «Ո՛ւր մարմին կայ, հոն պիտի հաւաքուին

արծիւները»:

Առակ մըն ալ ըսաւ անոնց, որ գիտնան թէ պէտք է ամէ՛ն ատեն աղօթել՝ առանց

ձանձրանալու: Ըսաւ. «Քաղաքի մը մէջ դատաւոր մը կար, որ Աստուծմէ չէր վախնար ու մարդ չէր

յարգեր: Նոյն քաղաքին մէջ այրի մըն ալ կար, որ կու գար անոր եւ կ՚ըսէր. “Պաշտպանէ՛ իմ

իրաւունքս՝ ոսոխիս դէմ”: Ան ժամանակ մը չէր ուզեր անոր մտիկ ընել. բայց յետոյ ըսաւ ինքնիրեն.

“Թէպէտ Աստուծմէ չեմ վախնար ու մարդ չեմ յարգեր, գո՛նէ պաշտպանեմ այս այրիին իրաւունքը՝

զիս անհանգստացնելուն համար, որպէսզի չգայ ամէն ատեն թախանձէ ինծի”»: Եւ Տէրը ըսաւ.

«Լսեցէ՛ք ի՛նչ կ՚ըսէ անիրաւ դատաւորը: Հապա Աստուած պիտի չպաշտպանէ՞ իր ընտրեալներուն

իրաւունքը, որոնք կը գոչեն իրեն ցերեկ ու գիշեր, թէեւ համբերատար ըլլայ անոնց հանդէպ: Կը

յայտարարեմ ձեզի թէ շուտո՛վ պիտի պաշտպանէ անոնց իրաւունքը. բայց երբ մարդու Որդին գայ,

արդեօք հաւատք պիտի գտնէ՞ երկրի վրայ»: Սա՛ առակն ալ ըսաւ ոմանց, որոնք իրենք իրենց վրայ

կը վստահէին թէ արդար են, եւ կ՚անարգէին ուրիշները. «Երկու մարդ տաճարը բարձրացաւ

աղօթելու, մէկը՝ Փարիսեցի, ու միւսը՝ մաքսաւոր: Փարիսեցին կայնած էր եւ սա՛պէս կ՚աղօթէր

ինքնիրեն. “Ո՛վ Աստուած, շնորհակալ եմ քեզմէ՝ որ ուրիշ մարդոց պէս չեմ, յափշտակող, անիրաւ,

շնացող, կամ ալ այս մաքսաւորին պէս. հապա շաբաթը երկու անգամ ծոմ կը պահեմ, եւ ամբողջ

եկամուտիս տասանորդը կու տամ”: Իսկ մաքսաւորը հեռուն կայնած էր, ու չէր ուզեր աչքն ալ

բարձրացնել երկինք, հապա՝ ծեծելով իր կուրծքը՝ կ՚ըսէր. “Աստուա՛ծ, ներէ՛ ինծի՝ մեղաւորիս”: Կը

յայտարարեմ ձեզի թէ ասիկա այն միւսէն աւելի արդարացած իջաւ իր տունը. որովհետեւ ո՛վ որ կը

բարձրացնէ ինքզինք՝ պիտի խոնարհի, իսկ ո՛վ որ կը խոնարհեցնէ ինքզինք՝ պիտի բարձրանայ»:

According to Archbishop Maghakia Ormanian, the 24th day or the fourth Wednesday of the period

of Great Lent (March 27, 2019), is called Michink (Միջինք) symbolizing that the first half of the period of

Great Lent has already passed. Since that day church hymns written by Steghee (Ստեղի) are sung during

the Peace Service held in the evenings on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

According to the folk tradition the housewives bake unleavened cake and put a coin in it while

baking. The current year will be successful for the member of the family who will have the coin in his/her

portion.

Candle, used in the Divine Liturgy or Divine Office, symbolizes Christ as the Light of the World.

Candles of different sizes used on the altar, on the ambon (bema), on the two sides of the chancel-lectern

(Arm. դաս = das), in the hands of acolytes, of deacons and occasionally in the hands of the priests and

members of the congregation.

Canon, “rule” in Greek. The word has several meanings: 1) A church law promulgated by a Church

Council or a Church Father. 2) A series of chants (Arm. շարական = sharagan) proper to a special church-

feast commemorating a sacred event or a saint. 3) A series of liturgical items (psalm, hymn, ascription,

litany and collect) composed on a special prayer theme or used for the performance of a sacrament and

sacramental. 4) The collection of sixty-six sacred books forming the Bible or the Holy Scriptures, accepted

by the Church as being genuine and inspired by the Holy Spirit. 5) One of the eight divisions of the Psalter,

ending with canticle, ascription, bidding and collect, the whole forming the basis of the second part of the

Night Office (Arm. Գիշերային ժամ = Keesherayin zham).
