Dear Parish Family, There is no doubt that we all are currently living in uncertain times... very strange and unsettling times to say the least. The coronavirus pandemic has affected us in ways we have never experienced. Our daily life routine as we have known it has been changed. For many people, this is a time of great anxiety and stress. Again we have been reminded of our common humanity that we are all brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God. We need Him more than ever. The Lord Jesus is the source of healing, our comfort, our consolation, and our guide. Let's turn to Him, and cling to Him, more than ever. Our faith is strong, and in our times of greatest need, we have always turned to God to ask for His help and guidance during periods of uncertainty. Now more than ever we need to be kind and merciful to those in need and give witness to the truth of His Gospel, and to the beauty and consolation of our Catholic Faith. With confidence let us go to Mary asking for her intercession and protection. Let us pray for those who are suffering from or have lost loved ones to this virus. May God bring them solace and grant them peace. We must also pray for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them the wisdom, prudence and strength they need to respond to this crisis with compassion and in the common good. Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent, known traditionally as Laetare Sunday. This observance harkens back to a day when the penances and disciplines of the season were much more severe than they are today. Today takes its name from the Entrance Antiphon of the Mass that in the U.S. we replace with an Opening Hymn.... “Laetare Jerusalem!”~ Rejoice, O Jerusalem! Interestingly enough, the Sunday is also called Rose Sunday. Most people think that name comes from the “rose colored” vestment the priest wears today. But, actually, the name comes from the custom in Rome that on this day the Pope blesses the golden roses that He sends to Catholic Monarchs throughout Europe during Easter. Whatever the customs, and however they’ve changed, especially in these days of uncertainty and confusion in our world, the message of this Sunday is a timely one. Laetare Sunday marks the liturgical mid-point in the Lenten Season. Actually, the Thursday before Laetare Sunday is the “middle-day” of Lent, but the observance is moved to Sunday to honor the Lord’s Day. Today reminds us that there is a purpose for our fasting, there is an end in sight, and a wonderful reward is waiting for us if we remain faithful to Jesus in His suffering. Even in the face of uncertainty and doubt, faith challenges us to remain faithful, steadfast, and reliant on the Lord. For those who have not been keeping the discipline of Lent, Laetare Sunday is an urgent call to repentance... there is still time! Do something to grow in holiness, and in your relationship with the Lord. As we celebrate Laetare Sunday today, make sure you do something to make the day special, or “different.” Let today enliven your observance of the rest of this holy season. Recommit yourself to the discipline of Lent and put on the suffering of Jesus all the more, so that when Easter comes, you will know the true joy of that blessed day. Give Jesus your heart, and He will give you Heaven! ~Father De Salvo

Querida Familia Parroquial, No hay duda de que todos estamos viviendo tiempos inciertos ... tiempos muy extraños e inquietantes, por decir lo menos. La pandemia de coronavirus nos ha afectado de formas que nunca hemos experimentado. Nuestra rutina de la vida diaria, tal como la conocemos, ha cambiado. Para muchas personas, este es un momento de gran ansiedad y estrés. Nuevamente, hemos recordado nuestra humanidad común de que todos somos hermanos y hermanas, que todos somos una familia bajo Dios. Lo necesitamos más que nunca. El Señor Jesús es la fuente de curación, nuestro consuelo y nuestra guía. Volvamos a Él, y aferrámonos a Él, más que nunca. Nuestra fe es fuerte, y en nuestros tiempos de mayor necesidad, siempre hemos recurrido a Dios para pedirle su ayuda y guía durante los períodos de incertidumbre. Ahora más que nunca debemos ser amables y misericordiosos con los necesitados y dar testimonio de la verdad de Su Evangelio, y de la belleza y el consuelo de nuestra fe católica. Con confianza, vamos a María pidiéndole su intercesión y protección. Oremos por aquellos que sufren o han perdido seres queridos a causa de este virus. Que Dios les traiga consuelo y les conceda paz. También debemos rezar por los médicos, enfermeras y cuidadores, por los funcionarios de salud pública y todos los líderes cívicos. Que Dios les conceda la sabiduría, la prudencia y la fuerza que necesitan para responder a esta crisis con compasión y en el bien común. Hoy celebramos el Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma, conocido tradicionalmente como Domingo de Laetare. Esta observancia se remonta a un día en que las penitencias y las disciplinas de la temporada eran mucho más severas de lo que son hoy. Hoy toma su nombre de la Antífona de entrada de la misa que en los EE. UU. Reemplazamos con un himno de apertura ... "¡Laetare Jerusalén!" ~ ¡Alégrate, oh Jerusalén! Curiosamente, el domingo también se llama Domingo de rosas. La mayoría de la gente piensa que ese nombre proviene de la vestimenta de "rosa" que usa el sacerdote hoy. Pero, en realidad, el nombre proviene de la costumbre en Roma de que en este día el Papa bendice las rosas doradas que envía a los Reyes Católicos en toda Europa durante la Pascua. Cualesquiera que sean las costumbres, y como hayan cambiado, especialmente en estos días de incertidumbre y confusión en nuestro mundo, el mensaje de este domingo es oportuno. El domingo de Laetare marca el punto medio litúrgico en la temporada de Cuaresma. En realidad, el jueves anterior al domingo de Laetare es el "día medio" de la Cuaresma, pero la celebración se traslada al domingo para honrar el Día del Señor. Hoy nos recuerda que hay un propósito para nuestro ayuno, hay un final a la vista y una maravillosa recompensa nos espera si permanecemos fieles a Jesús en Su sufrimiento. Incluso ante la incertidumbre y la duda, la fe nos reta a permanecer fieles, firmes y dependientes del Señor. Para aquellos que no han mantenido la disciplina de la Cuaresma, el domingo de Laetare es un llamado urgente al arrepentimiento ... ¡todavía hay tiempo! Haz algo para crecer en santidad y en tu relación con el Señor. Mientras celebramos el domingo de Laetare hoy, asegúrate de hacer algo para que el día sea especial o "diferente". Deja que hoy avive tu observancia del resto de esta temporada sagrada. Vuelva a comprometerse con la disciplina de la Cuaresma y ponga el sufrimiento de Jesús aún más, para que cuando llegue la Pascua, conozca la verdadera alegría de ese día bendito. ¡Dale a Jesús tu corazón y Él te dará el cielo! ~ Padre De Salvo

What are You Doing for Lent?... There’s still time to make an effort to show love! Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All Catholics are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy... Laetare Sunday reminds us that there is still time to sacrifice with Jesus, to show our love for Him. And so, what are you doing? If you are looking for a way to grow spiritually, here are a few suggestions: •Read Scripture ~ Each day read a chapter or two from the Bible. Perhaps begin with one of the Gospels, or the writings of Saint Paul. •Make a Visit ~ During the week, stop in church, and spend a few moments in prayer before Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Take time to listen to what He has to say to you. •Attend Lenten Devotions ~ The Stations of the Cross are a traditional Lenten Devotion. •Pray the Rosary ~ Grow in your love for Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our mother. •Increase in Prayer ~ Do whatever it takes to increase in your efforts at prayer: Pray in the car while waiting to pick up your children; turn off the car radio and pray during your long commute to work; pray while you do housework.... you’re usually alone, aren’t you? •Give ~ Give of your time, talent, and treasure. Make the effort and sacrifice to give more time to your family. Go the extra mile for another person for the love of Jesus. Give alms to the poor, and increase in your effort to provide for the needs of the Church. Don’t just give what is “left over” in your pocket, give from your need. The Lord asks not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice.... give until you notice that you are giving. •Fast ~ Not only from food, but do without whatever “fills you.” In fasting from food, drink, media, etc., we learn to be more dependent on God to fill the void and not run to creature comforts for security, piece of mind, and “love”. •Read ~ Take up a spiritual work of literature, classic or contemporary. They are readily available in Catholic bookstores.

¿Qué haces para la Cuaresma? ... ¡Todavía hay tiempo para hacer un esfuerzo por mostrar amor! La Cuaresma es la principal temporada de penitencia en el año cristiano. Se insta a todos los católicos a desarrollar y seguir un programa de abnegación voluntaria (además de seguir las regulaciones de Cuaresma), oraciones serias y una ejecución de obras de caridad y misericordia ... El domingo de Laetare nos recuerda que todavía hay tiempo sacrificarnos con Jesús, mostrar nuestro amor por él. Si está buscando una manera de crecer espiritualmente, aquí hay algunas sugerencias: • Lea las Escrituras ~ Cada día lea uno o dos capítulos de la Biblia. Quizás comience con uno de los Evangelios, o los escritos de San Pablo. • Haga una visita ~ Durante la semana, visite la iglesia y pase unos momentos en oración ante Cristo, presente en el Santísimo Sacramento. Tómese el tiempo para escuchar lo que tiene que decirle. • Asistir a las devociones cuaresmales ~ Las Estaciones de la Cruz son una devoción cuaresmal tradicional. • Reza el Rosario ~ Crece en tu amor por María, la Madre de Jesús y nuestra madre. • Aumento de la oración ~ Haga lo que sea necesario para aumentar sus esfuerzos de oración: ore en el automóvil mientras espera a recoger a sus hijos; apaga la radio del auto y reza durante tu largo viaje al trabajo; reza mientras haces las tareas del hogar ... • Dar ~ Dar de su tiempo, talento y tesoro. Haga el esfuerzo y el sacrificio para darle más tiempo a su familia. Haz un esfuerzo adicional por otra persona por el amor de Jesús. Dé limosna a los pobres y aumente su esfuerzo para satisfacer las necesidades de la Iglesia. No solo dé lo que "sobra" en su bolsillo, dé su necesidad. El Señor no pide dones iguales, sino sacrificios iguales ... • Rápido ~ No solo de la comida, sino de lo que sea que “te llene”. Al ayunar con la comida, la bebida, los medios de comunicación, etc., aprendemos a ser más dependientes de Dios para llenar el vacío y no correr a las comodidades para la seguridad, la tranquilidad y el "amor". • Leer ~ Emprender una obra espiritual de literatura, clásica o contemporánea. Están disponibles en librerías católicas.
