Circular Economy – A Way Forward To Rethink On Sustainable Waste Management

Dr. M.Subha, Head, EMD

Cities are the nucleus of growth, partnership, knowledge and Innovation. Resources consumption and waste generation are the two major effects of rapid urbanisation with massive growth in the population. India being a seventh largest country in the world with annual urbanization rate of 2.28%, expected to add 400 million urban dwellers between 2016 and 2050. The urban centres are currently generating 62 million tons of municipal solid waste per annum. It is projected that by 2031, 165 million tons of municipal solid waste will be generated annually and it could reach 436 million tons by 2050. This results in adverse impact on human health and ecosystem. To mitigate the impact, cities are adopting a 3Rs principle which revolves around “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”. The outcome of this principle in realization is very minimal and cities are failing to attain the sustainability. To realise a smart waste management system, maximize resource recovery and reduce risks to humans and ecosystem, the transition to a circular waste management paradigm is required and this aspect is widely discussed in the development circles today. Circular economy is a restorative and regenerative system that aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest ability and values at all times.

In place of tradition 3Rs, three more Rs namely “Repair, Refurbish and Remanufacture” are added in circular economy concept totaling it to 6Rs to realise a smart and environmentally friendly design and sustainable manufacturing that lead to resource efficient and cleaner production by stepping away from the traditional, “take-make-dispose models”. This transition to circular economy in India calls for extensive collaborative efforts between key stakeholders, including regulators, policy makers, corporates and financial institutions which can provide the necessary fillip to key Government of India missions and ensure the next wave of growth in the country.
