We thank all of our parent helpers and support group who continuously offer their support and time to help our school. What a team of parents we have! This year our school is in a review year in which we need to do a self-evaluation of the past four years and set new direction for the next four. School Council will work consistently with myself, Marc Bressan and our Senior Education Improvement Leader with many discussions around the analysis of our data and how we keep moving Kingsley Park towards being the best school we possibly can be. Parent feedback will be sought throughout the year so we would love it if you can take the time to answer our many questions as they come, we value your input so please keep giving it to us. We have a few maintenance concerns around the school that we are working on including fixing (or removing and reinstating) all of the raised concrete which is a major trip hazard for students, staff and everyone on our site. We have also had some leaking roof issues which we are working with the Department of Education on fixing. We will keep you updated on all events throughout the year. We wish you all a nice holiday break, travel safe and stay safe. Gill Gray & The Kingsley Park Staff 30th March 2017

On Tuesday 28th March, we were fortunate enough to have the Tour de Cure riders visit our school whilst completing their ride from Mt. Hotham to Hobart in Tasmania. Tour De Cure is a cycling foundation committed to funding research to find a cure for cancer. Since 2007 Tour de Cure has raised over $25m to help fund 252 cancer research, support and prevention projects and have engaged over 65,000 men, women and children with our cancer awareness programs.

During the visit, members of the Tour de Cure group presented to our Year 3 - 6 students, the Be Fit - Be Healthy - Be Happy program. The presentation took around 20 minutes and was interactive and fun for all the students and staff who attended. The children will be given a bag of goodies and a book explaining Tour de Cure and the program Be Fit - Be Health - Be Happy. Our School Captains, Vice Captains and House Captains were invited to be representatives during the presentation - thank you to Lachlan, Ella, Jordan, Tilly, Riley, Lily, Remi, Aleira,

Cooper, Steph, Katie and Riley for being such great School Ambassadors. Tour de Cure have generously donated a bicycle to the school, which we hope to raffle. Some of our Captains with Mark

Beretta and Eric Bana. Our presenters with all Year 3-6

students.

What a busy start to the year we have had with a short but well enjoyed and successful first term.

Well done to our students on their amazing attendance and learning efforts. We have seen a huge decrease in absences and late arrivals which is terrific. Students need to be here to learn and they have done lots of learning this term with a lot more to come through the year. It is fabulous to see the great art works that are lining the corridor, students improved use of computers and iPads for learning, lots of Gold and Silver Mathletics awards, some super writing completed, the production underway and many great sporting achievements including lunchtime clubs and activities. Many students are looking forward to the Premiers’ reading Challenge and reading lots of books. Our school had the highest number of participants in all of our area schools last year so lets see if we can achieve that again. Our KidsMatter team have continued with breakfast mornings and important days to celebrate harmony and diversity across the school whilst raising the importance of ‘speaking up’ and not accepting bullying or violence in any forms. What a great learning community we have here at Kingsley Park.

Our carnival was a super success raising just over $8000 for the school and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Gill Gray & The Kingsley Park Staff

Choosing a ‘just right’ book. Children make progress in reading by spending time independently reading while applying reading strategies. For younger children it begins with decoding strategies. Decoding strategies help students know what to do when they come to a word they don’t know. Such strategies consist of: · Get your mouth ready · Look at the picture · Say all the sounds · Ask: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? · Look for chunks In order for students to be applying these strategies they need to be reading a ‘just right’ book. Students can learn how to choose a just right book that matches their reading level by using the five finger rule. In her book, ‘Reading with Meaning,’ Debbie Miller says, “It’s difficult to apply strategies when you know every word and understand everything; it’s equally difficulty when you know hardly any words and understand very little.” Miller suggests that students are provided with a choice of just right books. Our goal at Kingsley Park is to create independent readers, so we believe that teaching children how to choose a ‘just right’ book is important. If children are unsure if the book they are reading is ‘just right’ then they can use the Five Finger Rule to help them decide. 1. Open to a page of the book. 2. Begin reading. 3. Each time you come to a word you don’t know, hold up 1 finger. 4. After you finish reading the page, check to see how many fingers you are holding up. Too Easy: 0 - 1 fingers Just Right: 2 - 3 fingers Too Hard: 4 - 5 fingers

It’s a well-researched fact that young children who are read to every day do better at school SO…..start reading.

SUNSMART REMINDER—UV Rays are still out over the holidays

I hope you’re enjoying this lovely autumn weather – let’s hope it continues! This is just a quick note to remind students and families to continue using sun protection throughout the term break and for a few weeks in Term Two. UV levels are still above three so please continue to Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, Slap on a wide brimmed hat, Seek shade and, if practical, Slide on wrap-around sunglasses until the end of April. Please check the daily sun protection times to be sure. These are available on the free SunSmart app and widget, in the weather section of the newspaper or at sunsmart.com.au Even in the cooler autumn weather, that UV exposure all adds up. Remember, hats are required September to

May.

12 Apps That Every Parent Of A Teen Should Know About By Ann Brenoff

Not everything online is evil, nor does danger lurk behind every new app that comes to market. But keeping up with your teens'

and preteens' online activities is much like trying to nail jelly to the barn door - frustrating, futile and something bound to make

you feel inept. Keep in mind that no app poses a danger in and of itself, but many do provide kids with an opportunity to make,

ahem, bad choices.

1. Audio Manager.

Sometimes when it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's really not a duck. Such is the case with Audio Manager, an app that has nothing to do with managing

your teen's music files or controlling the volume on his smartphone and everything to do with him hiding things like nude photos from you. It's one of the top apps for

hiding other apps. Yes, there are such things. Kids can hide any app they don’t want you to see, Teen Safe says. When you press and hold the Audio Manager app,

a lock screen is revealed -- behind which users can hide messages, photos, videos, and other apps.

2. Calculator%.

Same deal, but this time with a calculator icon posing as something it isn't. Sedgrid Lewis, online safety expert, notes that these apps look like a normal calculator

app but when teens push a button within the app they can hide all inappropriate pictures. "It's a key way teens are hiding their nude pictures from their parents," said

Lewis.

Lewis says the best way to solve this situation is for parents to add their teen to their iCloud account. That way, whenever a new app is downloaded by the teen, it will

automatically download to the parent's phone as well. Think it's not serious? Last fall, there was a headline-making case in a Colorado high school where teens used

apps to hide a huge sexting ring from parents and school officials. And an Alabama district attorney, Pamela Casey, posted the video below to warn parents about the

Calculator% app.

3. Vaulty.

Vaulty will not only store photos and videos away from parental spying eyes, but it also will snap a photo of anyone who tries to access the “vault” with the wrong

password. Parents who find it on their teens’ phones can conclude just one thing: Your kid is hiding things from you.

Parent Feedback

We aim to please so would love more feedback on how we can improve. There is feedback forms that you may complete at the office, these can be placed in the red letterbox labelled Parent Feedback. Please drop us a note, we would love to hear your thoughts and help make Kingsley Park the best it can be. Thank you to the first parent two parents for their feedback: We need a bigger lost property! Perhaps with sections for hats, tops, pants, etc. It doesn’t look good when half have been dumped on the floor next to the basket :( Response: I couldn’t agree more. We have tubs on order and labels ready to go to tidy up this area. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Our response: The painters re-painted the toilet floors in the December holidays. We now have the cleaners scrubbing the toilet floors daily and the urinals and toilet bowls have a deep clean every school holidays. We hope they are already smelling better.

At our previous school we had an app called QKR which was fantastic for parents to pay for excursions or cantee. This would be great. :) Lily has loved her new school and Mrs Cameron & Leigh from the canteen have made me very welcome. The ladies in the office have been so helpful too. Thank you for all your help settling in. Our response: Thank you for your lovely feedback. We will look into the QKR or similar if it will help parents out. Lovely to hear your comments and that you feel welcome.. Parents did not receive enough notification for having Easter Bonnet items to school. My child was away on the Friday so didn’t receive any notice at all. Our response: We sincerely apologise for the extremely short time-line and take on board your feedback. Hopefully parents will always receive reasonable notice in the future. We look forward to improving in this area. If you do not wish for your feedback to be shared publicly, please note this on the form. We will endeavour to address all feedback, this depends on volume.

NAPLAN is coming for all year 3 and 5 students. The National Assessment Program for Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a national assessment and reporting program in the areas of numeracy, reading, writing and language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) for students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 each year. This testing will be conducted next term between 9th and 11th May 2017. These national test results provide information on how your child is progressing and performing in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. Students will begin looking at some practice tests at school to help them to understand the format of the questions and give them the experience of completing the test in the required test conditions (eg. working silently and independently and within a time limit). Some have also been practising some questions as part of their homework. The NAPLAN site has uploaded full proper practice versions of all tests, If you have access to a computer at home, these full tests online are definitely worth sitting students through over the holidays as a pre-test to NAPLAN preparation. We cannot teach to the test, nor do we continually practise tests as we have so much curriculum to cover, but it does help to improve by practisng. You can find the tests at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests/the-tests.html
