REGIONAL ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

A big congratulations to Nadia who competed in the Bendigo Regional Athletic Championships on Monday

In the 11yrs. Discus event, Nadia threw the discus just over 15m to earn fifth place across the Region.

Q. Were you nervous?

A: A little bit but it didn’t affect my throws.

Q. Were you pleased with your performance at the sports?

A: Yes I was pretty pleased with how I went. And I made two new friends – they were really nice.

Q. Have you set a goal for next year?

A: I would like to throw 17m+ and finish higher than 5th.

WALK TO SCHOOL 2017

Our school is participating in Walk

to School 2017 which is a great,

easy and fun way to get our kids

and families active this October!

We have had two wonderful ‘Walk

to School’ walks on the last two

Wednesdays. Yesterday we walked

from the top of the hill across the

river and followed the O’Keefe

Rail Trail along the river and then

to school. We had 31 students and

12 parents who started or joined in

along the way. Our wonderful Rail

Trail, chatter, laughs, sunshine,

skipping, babbling river, friends, bikes – what a great start to the day.

The walk next Wednesday starts at 8.30 and is from the corner of McIvor Hwy

and Raglan St. (Lottie and Mia’s corner). As we will be walking along or next

to the road, we would prefer not to have bikes if possible.

ECOLINK INCURSION

Today, Sophie from Ecolink in Bacchus Marsh came to our school to run some

great sessions as part of our Environmental Ed. Program.

Sophie worked with Grades 3-6 to learn how to make paper and our Prep-2

students to learn about mini-beasts.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

ATHLETIC SPORTS

Our whole school Athletic Sports are on tomorrow, Friday October 20th at the Latrobe University Athletics

Track in Retreat Rd. Flora Hill. The Athletic Sports begin at 9.30am and all students are required to be there

by 9.10am.

We are encouraging all students to put in a personal best effort to earn as many points as possible to go towards

our whole school total.

A reminder to parents that we do not run the school bus in to the Athletic Sports. Families are required to

provide transport to and from the event for their children. Please contact the school if you need assistance with

organising a lift.

Students will need to be in school uniform and have suitable footwear for athletics. Lunch and water bottle is

required. Parents are welcome and encouraged to come along and support the students.

The events will conclude at approximately 2.00pm.

SWIMMING

Last week was very busy with our Swimming

Program on each day at the Eaglehawk YMCA

Pool. Well done to our students who worked hard at

the end of the week to improve their skills and

fitness. The last day provided some great

opportunities to experience being fully clothed in

water, swimming in sea weed, life jackets and

weighted hoops to extend water familiarisation and

skills in case of emergencies.

LEARNING DIARIES

We hope you have enjoyed looking through your child’s

Learning Diary. Please return them to school so we can start

adding this term’s work.

PROGRESSIVE DINNER

A big thank you to all who came along to the Progressive

Dinner on Saturday night. It was a very enjoyable night with

lots of laughs, chats, catch ups and a few dollars raised for the school at

the same time. A big thank you to Sam, Corrine, Erin, Kelly and Sharon

for all their work preparing the night.

Thanks to Corrine and Dutchy at the Tavern, to Rob and Jill Charlton at

the Farmer’s Arms and to Ian Martin at the Golf Club for their extra work

and support. Final figures are not known yet but we think approximately

$1,800 has been raised.

BIKE HIKE

Gr. 5/6 students will head off next Thursday for the Bike Hike from Tallarook to Yea. They will be riding

along the Great Victorian Rail Trail and cover almost 60km over the two days.

While it will be a challenge, the feeling of satisfaction of completing a personal best effort in something

significant makes it well worth it.

We will have great support from the 13 parents who are coming along and our friends from the Bendigo

Kilmore Rail Trail Group.

There will be two more optional practice rides this weekend along the Rail Trail.

Saturday starting at 1.00pm from the school

Sunday starting at 3.00pm from the school

Please ensure helmets and water bottles are brought along. Parents, regardless of whether you are coming on

the Bike Hike or not, are welcome to join in.

There is an information meeting on Tuesday night at 7.00pm in the staff room for parents who are coming

along on the Bike Hike to chat about general organisational details and answer any questions you may have.

PET SHOW & FASHIONS OFF THE FIELD

On Melbourne Cup Day, we traditionally hold our annual ‘Pet Show’ in the morning and our ‘Fashions Off

The Field’ in the afternoon. This will be on again this year on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7th November.

Some students choose to bring real pets ranging from mice to horses, others choose more creative ‘pets’. With

increased student numbers involved, if families have a choice which pets to bring, smaller more manageable

pets will be the best option.

A reminder that pets need to be properly restrained with appropriate leads and cages/containers at all

times.

A program is attached to today’s Newsletter. To add to the fun of the day we like everyone to be involved in

our ‘Fashions Off The Field’. There is a section for everyone from hats, ties to full race going outfits. If new

families have any questions about how the day runs, please see Ms. Saunders.

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP

As part of our annual Pet Show preparations on Cup Day, students will be taking part in Responsible Pet

Ownership information sessions on Monday October 30th.

NATIONAL WATER WEEK POSTER COMPETITION

As part of National Water Week, Rebecca Hermans, Community Relations Officer from Coliban Water will

be at school next Tuesday to present the Water Week Poster winners in each category from our school.

As mentioned in our Newsletter last term, Evie was announced as the Regional Winner for Bendigo. Rebecca

will present Evie with her Regional Winner prize.

We will have a short assembly 9.00 – 9.10 Tuesday morning to present these prizes.

GROUNDS

Many parents will have noticed the planting of 8 manchurian pear trees near our McIvor Hwy. entrance.

A big thank you to Jeanette Tenace for her work in researching, sourcing, planting and looking after the trees.

We hope over time that they will form a beautiful entrance to the school.

SCHOOL COUNCIL FOLLOW UP

COGB ROADWORKS

Roadworks on Raglan St. outside the school will begin in mid November and be completed by mid

January. The works will include formalising the car park along the school side of the road and the

sealing of the road surface. At the instigation of School Council and with co-operation from COGB, a

car park is being established in the paddock to the north of the school. This will allow approximately 20-

30 more car parks for staff and parents. Closer to the time, we will be able to provide further information

to promote safe travel while the works are underway.

SURVEY DATA

Thanks to parents who took time recently to fill in the Parent Opinion Survey. At School Council this

week we looked through the data from this survey as well as the Student Attitude to School Survey data,

completed by the Gr. 4/5/6 students in Term 3. Along with the Staff Opinion Survey, these surveys form

part of our evaluation of 2017 and our planning for 2018.

School Council aimed to identify areas of success, as well as areas for further work. We also looked at

the correlation between the two sets of data and where the consistencies were in terms successes and

areas for further work.

Staff Opinion data will be in soon so we will have an opportunity to look across all three sets of data to

note correlations, successes and areas for further work.

NATIONAL BANDANNA DAY

We have bandannas for sale at the office for $5 each. Students will be able to wear their bandanna to school

on Friday 3rd November. Funds raised are donated to CanTeen which is a support group for young people

living with cancer.

GRADE 5/6 EXCURSION –CRUSOE RESERVOIR

Next Tuesday, our Grade 5/6 students will be travelling to Crusoe Reservoir at Big Hill as part of the science

work being completed with our training teachers. Students will be meeting with the Park Ranger to discuss

ecosystems, local flora and fauna. There is no cost for this activity. A permission note is attached to the

Newsletter.
