DHHS Alcohol Survey Results Are In Lincoln – Alcohol is the most commonly used substance in the state. Nebraska’s rate of underage drinking, binge drinking and alcohol-impaired driving continue to be higher than the rest of the nation. While alcohol misuse is a cause for concern among people of all ages, it’s particularly concerning for young adults who tend to be the most likely age group to misuse alcohol and suffer the consequences. According to the Nebraska Young Adult Alcohol Opinion Survey, here’s what randomly sampled 19-25 year olds said about: Alcohol use Alcohol use Alcohol use Alcohol use Alcohol use - Two-thirds of 19-25 year olds in Nebr. reported drinking alcohol within the last month. - Two out of every five reported binge drinking (5 or more drinks for men/4 or more drinks for women within a couple of hours). - Young adults living in urban areas of the state reported the highest percentage for alcohol use. - Young adults 19-22 enrolled in school full time were more likely than their non-full-time peers to consume alcohol and binge drink. - 21-25 year olds were about twice as likely as 19-20 year olds to drink and binge drink. - Females and males were equally likely to drink and binge drink. - Most young adults consumed alcohol at their home or another person’s home. - Three in five young adults reported that they usually drank beer. Beer was followed by liquor, wine and then flavored-malt beverages. Alcohol-impaired driving Alcohol-impaired driving Alcohol-impaired driving Alcohol-impaired driving Alcohol-impaired driving About three in every 10 19-25 year olds said they drove a car under the influence of alcohol over the past year. - This report reinforces that alcohol misuse continues to be a widespread public health problem in Nebraska, said Dr. Joann Schaefer, the state’s Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. A comprehensive prevention approach along with a diverse set of partners is key to help change behavior. Many communities across Nebraska are addressing binge drinking among young adults through the Nebraska Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant. Communities use funds for responsible beverage server training, random sobriety check points, compliance checks, media campaigns, and alcohol-free entertainment options. Your Heart Asks….How Much Exercise Do You Need? What is Good Nutrition?Find the answers that are good for you….

For your overall health , the American Heart Association recommends......at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (think walking or a leisurely bikeride) five days a week PLUS strength training twice a week. OR......at least 20 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity (like jogging or a challenging bikeride) three days a week PLUS strength training twice a week.

A little twist on the rules: Though 20- or 30-minute sessions may be ideal forhealth and mood, experts say that you can get plenty of benefit from exercising in just10-minute spurts too.

For your mood , aim for 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise or a combina-tion of aerobic exercise and muscle-strengthening three to five days a week. Someresearch shows that even lower levels of activity may offer mental health benefits, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Centers for Disease Control offers more detailed guidelines at:http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/adults.html

March 2011 All students in the Class of 2012 will be participating in the Nebraska State Accountability Reading(NeSA-R) and Mathematics (NeSA-M) tests and a field test of the Nebraska State Accountability Science(NeSA-S) test this spring. The NeSA-R is the state reading test measuring vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. TheNeSA-M is the state mathematics test measuring number sense, geometric/measurement concepts, algebraic concepts, and data analysis/probability concepts. The school district will send out score reportsfor students early in the 2011-2012 school year. The NeSA-Science test is being given as a field test this first year to students in the Class of 2012.Since it is a field test, students, parents, schools, and districts will not get scores back from the NebraskaDepartment of Education. However, it is still important that students do their best on the test, because theinformation gathered from this field test will be used to make sure the items on the test and the testingprocedures are fair for all students. There are several things parents can do to positively contribute to their child’s success. Encourage yourchildren to put forth their best effort with positive statements expressing confidence in their abilities andtheir efforts. A good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast will go a long way to help your children bestshow what they know and are able to do on the test. Finally, being in school during testing is veryimportant. Please reschedule any appointments that may take your child out of school on the testing dateslisted below. As always, we appreciate your support! Please call (402) 223-1512 or email at [email protected] if you have any general questions about theNeSA testing. Please contact your child’s teacher or the building principal if you have questions specific to yourchild’s classroom testing schedule or other test administration questions. Please review the test schedule for highschool.

The AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) convened February 16, 2011, inthe nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C. with thousands of scientists, engineers, educators, journalistsfrom all over the world and students from all over the United States in attendance until Sunday,February 20th. Former BHS graduate and current Kansas State Freshman, Ross Jensby, and BHS senior,Hillary Fischer, were among the attendees. Both students represented the 2010 top ten Nebraska JuniorAcademy of Science winners and were among 105 students from across the United States presentingtheir research at the meeting.

Ross’s project was entitled, “Honey’s Sweet Secret” whichinvestigated the antibacterial properties of different types of honey.Ross has been working with beekeeping since the third grade. Heinvestigated the claim by producers of New Zealand Manuka Honey thatit was more antibacterial than other types of honey. Hillary’s project wasentitled “Secrets of the Willow”which dealt with thedevelopment of a naturalrooting hormone from theshoots of the black willow, Salixnigra. Students presented both

a poster session and a powerpoint session about their project.Ross and Hillary qualified to represent Nebraska by competingand placing at Regional and State levels last spring, usingresearch projects they developed through Dr. Christen’s SpecialTopics class coursework at Beatrice High School.

Other highlights of theconference included a tour of the Vietnam, Korean, WW I, and WWIImemorials, and the Washington and Lincoln Memorials. Other toursincluded the National Botanical Gardens, the National SmithsonianZoo, the Smithsonian Museums, Goddard Space Center, and theNational Institute of Health. Students also had the opportunity toattend lectures by some of the brightest and most influential minds inAmerican science. The keynote speaker and president of the AAAS,Dr. Alice Huang, is a distinguished virologist and proponent forwomen in science. The conference theme was “Science WithoutBorders” and focused on the collaboration that must and is takingplace in Science research throughout the world. Students were alsotreated to a Breakfast with the Scientists where scientists from allover the world (including three Nobel Prize Winners!) visited withstudents. Also attending the national conference from Beatrice were Dr. JoanChristen, BHS Science Instructor, and LeeAnne Fischer.

Project ChammasBetween February 21 and March 4, Mr. LeFeber’s mentor class, decided to collect “gently used”or new, closed toe shoes, new socks and/or monetary donations to send to Ethiopians who have

no shoes. Often the children have to walk through open sewage in the streetswith nothing on their feet to protect them from bacteria and disease.

They were specifically looking for children’s footwear, but decided to accept any footwear donations. If you want to donate, you may bring the shoes to the high school office.
