13 Mental Strategies to Help You Stick With Your New

Exercise Routine

Let’s face it: It’s much easier to make fitness resolutions than to keep them. We all have the best intentions on January 1, and then as the year rolls on, we lose steam, confidence, and motivation. What seemed so feasible just days or weeks ago—going to the gym five days a week/running a half marathon/enter resolution here—can somehow morph into something impossible. And while it’s easy to blame our loss of focus on life happening, perhaps the biggest threat to a realistic resolution is the narrative that plays in our heads. Well, what if this year were different? Here, exercise experts share the mental techniques they use to help clients stay on track with their fitness goals when they’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and/or otherwise unmotivated.

Opportunity Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship

The University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship. Beginning in Spring 2019, one or two outstanding medical students who have successfully completed the third year of medical school at a LCME-accredited institution and who have an interest in orthopedics will be selected for this award. The award will include support for housing and travel. The University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is one of the premiere academic orthopedic departments in the United States and attracts individuals from throughout the United States and multiple foreign countries who come to Iowa City to advance their education. The Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship continues the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation’s long commitment to excellence, service and diversity. The department was founded by Arthur Steindler who immigrated to the United States because of limited opportunities he faced in Austria. After establishing the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation in Iowa City in 1913 he sought to provide educational and career opportunities for individuals who shared his commitment to excellence, service and diversity. Ruth Jackson is one of those individuals. Ruth Jackson, after graduating from medical school, sought education in surgery, but few if any programs would accept her. When she contacted Arthur Steindler, he enthusiastically offered her a position in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Iowa. Ruth Jackson is now recognized as the first woman orthopedic surgeon in the United States and the Ruth Jackson Society, an organization devoted to advancing women in orthopedics, is named for her. The Jackson-Steindler Clerkship Awardees will participate in the clinical services at the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, the educational programs including conferences and surgical skills education as well as have the opportunity to participate in research conferences. Policy for In the Know Announcement Submissions

1) All flyer/image submissions must be in JPG format (if the announcement is a

flyer). PDF and Word documents must be converted to JPG before being emailed

to [email protected]. A TEXT summary of the information in the

flyer must also be included along with the flyer. This is to ensure that our In

the Know emails are ADA compliant and readable by the visually impaired.

2) If the announcement is a text only announcement, please include it in the body

of your email. Please use black font only and include a title for your

announcement such as “Emergency Medicine Interest Group”. Make sure to

include a contact person and email.

3) If an announcement includes incorrect information (such as an incorrect date or

time), and that week’s In the Know has already been sent out, a revision for your

specific announcement will not be sent out to the school. The only time a

correction email will be sent out is if the error is on the part of Student Affairs

(mistyped or forgot to include an announcement). Submissions which do not meet

the requirements will be returned to sender requesting the appropriate edits. The

announcement may then be resubmitted to [email protected] for

inclusion in the In the Know.

4) To be included in the following Monday’s “In the Know”, announcements must be

submitted by 5PM the prior Thursday.

To submit information for the next Student Affairs Weekly Announcement, send an email to Niloofar Shahmohammadi at [email protected].
