I. Background
Oakland has suffers from negative press, the recent demonstrations only reinforced this negative image of
Oakland. The property owners located in Downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt/Uptown districts of
Oakland voted to pay assessments that will generate 2.2 million per year. These funds will be used torevitalize the area by providing security, maintenance, marketing and special events
II. Purpose for Meeting – Marco LiMandri, Executive Director LMUDA/DOA. The Downtown
Oakland and Lake Merritt Uptown CBD’s will hold a press conference to announce the organizations tothe media. The launch of the CBDs offer an opportunity for positive PR for Oakland. The goal of this PR Task Force is to align efforts of the CBD’s with those already taking place and coordinate with PR firms
hired by property owners.
III. Discussion of Recent Events
Two messages: Introducing the CBDs and their services to outside community as well as ensuring thatemployees in the two district feel safe in and around work.
IV. City Efforts to Support Business Community – Aliza Gallo, City of Oakland.
Feb 18 – Businesses that donated to a fund created to reimburse merchants for property damage causedduring the demonstrations will distribute checks at a press conference at City Hall.March 5 – Mayor’s Office presents “Meet Your Downtown Safety Team”
May 1 – Oakland Partnership Economic Summit
