Our recent Athletics Carnival was held at Tamplin Field for students in Years 2-6. The day was most successful with all students participating with skill and sportsmanship. Thank you to our outstanding parent group who timed, recorded and collated results throughout the day – your assistance is invaluable. Ribbons will be presented at our next assembly in Week 4 due to the date clash of our regular assembly date and Small Schools Track Carnival on Friday. Parents are welcome to attend this assembly

Congratulations to Dan Freeman who broke the school record for 11yrs Boys High Jump, jumping 1.25m! Dan joined 30 students on Wednesday to represent Maraylya PS at the Small Schools Field Events Carnival at McMahon Park, Kurrajong. Miss Wynn and Mr Gaffey attended this carnival, and Friday‟s track carnival, as team managers and officials. Several students will progress from Wednesday‟s field events and we await confirmation of today‟s results from the track carnival. Thank you to our parents for transporting children on the day, both their own and others‟.

next week detailing times and our travel arrangements. LAST As you may be aware, Mrs Bennett fulfils the role of Learning Assistance Support Teacher within our school, currently one day per fortnight. With additional funding, we have decided to increase her teaching role in this vital area. She will now work each Monday, within classrooms, to support particular individuals and small groups of students with specific learning needs in literacy and numeracy. Reading Recovery We welcome our Reading Recovery teacher, Mrs Melefonte, to our school this semester. She is currently assessing Year 1 students for inclusion in the Reading Recovery program. She will join us each morning for 2 hours to work with particular students in individual reading lessons. Parents will be contacted by Mr Melefonte if your child qualifies for a place in this effective program. UNSW Computer results Results and certificates will be presented to students who participated in the University Computer Competition last term. It shows our strengths lie in word processing and graphic manipulation, while we need to pay further attention to skills and understandings in emailing. Mathematics and English competitions will take place later in Term 3.

Coles Sport and Woolies Earn and Learn Keep collecting the „Coles Sports for Schools‟ vouchers and stickers for the Woolworths Earn and Learn program. Please return them to school, we will again select some excellent resources for our students. The collection boxes are located in the office foyer.

Cool Kids Music Company 23 of our students were involved in the „Cool Kids‟ music lessons taught at lunchtime on Tuesdays. These lessons are externally run and in addition to our school‟s own music programs. Students and their families have chosen from drum, keyboard and guitar tuition and the first two sessions were a great success for students. Further information is available from the office. Maraylya Christmas Movie Night At our last meeting on Monday night, several key decisions were made regarding our movie night on Saturday 1

st December.

A brief outline of the event is as follows

Our evening will commence at 4:30pm

Selection of food stalls (BBQ, cakes, slushies, coffee van etc )

Santa will again visit the children and will be available for Santa Photos.

Jumping castles

Face painting

Airbrush Tattoos

Silent auction (Great prizes!)

Christmas themed movie (decided by Maraylya students) will be shown $30 family ticket / $5 extra family member / $7.50 individual tickets

Raffle – “Scratchy Tree” We know our local community highly values this unique annual event but we do need further help to organise and run stalls throughout the evening. Even if you can be available for 30mins to help, it would make such a difference to the night.

Class News

K Kindergarten had a very enjoyable start to Term 3.They had lots of fun at the Athletics Carnival and Teddy Bears Picnic. It was perfect weather on the day. Vision Valley was also a very successful day and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We are looking forward to a very busy term.

1 Welcome back! First of all I would like to say a big thank you to all the wonderful parents and grandparents that helped out at the sports carnival, you are invaluable. Congratulations to all the children, you did so well with your cheering for your team mates. Well Done! In Term 3 from Weeks 2- 5 Year 1 will be looking at the HSIE Unit „The Need for Shelter’. The children will be exploring the need for people and other living things to have shelter. We will be looking at how shelters are built and how the natural environment can provide them. In science Weeks 5 – 10 „Growing Plants’, the children will need a few resources from home. Please see list below:- Empty butter container Cotton wool Ice-cream tubs Spelling and homework Week 2 spelling sound for Group 1 is “ing “and Group 2 is “ew” and “ue” Home work is handed out Thursday afternoons and is not due back until the following week. If your child loses his or her homework sheet there are spare copies in the box just inside the door.

2/3 Welcome back and what a fun week we had. The Athletics Carnival was great fun, all of 2/3 participated and had terrific time. What can we say about Vision Valley? We are so lucky to be offered such an opportunity, great activities, fantastic place and for free with a free mufti day included! 2/3 are going to be doing a novel study on “The Secret Zoo” this term, where we are going to practise our „Super 6‟ reading strategies. We also thought this would be a nice link to our camp this term at Taronga Zoo. Science this term will be on „Growing Plants‟ and HSIE is all about the „Need for Shelter‟. Home reading has changed slightly for this half of the year, Mrs Bennett and I are trying to encourage 2/3 to become more engaged with books. So, 2/3 needs to read a home reader and complete a very easy book report to share with their peers. Their new books, home reading register, book report worksheet and a covering letter went home on Tuesday, if you have any concerns or queries please do not hesitate to come and see us. A plastic folder for their home reading would be appreciated.

4/5 4/5 have begun Term 3 with a blast! We have started reading „Matilda‟ by Roald Dahl and will be focusing on the novel over the next several weeks. In HSIE, we are learning about British colonisation and have been focusing on Aboriginal lifestyles prior to settlement and will be researching Captain James Cook over the next 2 weeks. Also, the OLYMPICS are about to start and we have been learning about the different countries participating around the world.

6 Year 6 have begun the term learning about the discovery of gold within Australia during the 1850s and how this impacted on our country. We aim for our science work to focus on this precious metal also, as well as simple machines, many of which were used on the goldfields long ago. We hope to see you at our Science Focus Day next Thursday to show you what we are learning about. We have revised the addition and subtraction of fractions within mathematics lessons and have begun working on long multiplication. We have also begun „seat lotto‟ where students are drawn out of a hat to see where they will sit for the week. It is hoped this will help us to better transition for high school.
