“Mapping Main Ideas!”

n PROGRAM OVERVIEW This program can be used as a

unit or can be adapted into a year-long project. It is an integrated technology / reading unit with the focus on improving the ability of students to identify main ideas and supporting details from a given passage. The students use a passage from their weekly class story. Students read the passage and fill in the blank (graphic organizer) Thinking Map that is a tree map. On the tree map they write in 3 supporting details and summarize these to come up with the main idea of the passage. Once they have completed these steps, they begin creating their Inspiration software tree map using the paper copy as a reference.

I teach them at the beginning of the unit how to:

• Open a new Inspiration software project

• Use the rapid fire icon to create text bubbles

• Use the link icon to organize text into a “tree map” format

• Use tools pull down menu to insert sound

• Insert text, changing font color and style

• Insert clip art selected from symbols library

• Save the project using the story title the passage is from

What is unique about the program is while it is helping students develop their understanding of main idea through discussions of main ideas and supporting details, it is simultaneously developing their technology skills. They are using a technology productivity tool that enhances learning and promotes creativity.

At the end of the unit, students can print their slides to compile a book that can serve as another opportunity to reinforce the concept of main idea. Please see the attached detailed lesson plans.

n LESSON PLAN TITLES• Coyote Places the Stars (Trophies Lesson 17)

• Cocoa Ice (Trophies Lesson 24)

• Visitors from Space (Trophies Lesson 30)

n OVERALL VALUE I believe the POWERFUL part of

this project is the technology integration component combined with the use of graphic organizers. Graphic organizers, according to Learning Focused Solutions research, are effective learning tools for students helping them to turn abstract concepts into concrete visual representations. The research from Learning Focused Strategies suggests that the use of graphic organizers enhances student thinking and improves organizational skills and promotes learning that is substantial and long lasting.

The students are very quick learners and very motivated to complete the written / planning portion of the task in order to be given the opportunity to work on the computers. They love to come. Much of the learning transfers to other Microsoft programs such as Word and PowerPoint.

n MATERIALS Computers for student use that have

Inspiration 8 as one of the programs. Preferably Inspiration 8 as it allows you to access online clip art that greatly expands the options.

n ASSESSMENT AND ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Prior to the beginning of the unit,

to determine their technology skills related to Inspiration software, I administer a radar chart to determine their existing knowledge about our future technology learning. This same radar chart is given to them again at the end of the year or unit to determine growth in the targeted skills.

Prior to the beginning of the unit, I analyze their Kaplan Achievement Planner scores in reading focusing on their scores on the main idea/ supporting details portion of the assessment (36% of the 3rd grade question are related to Main Idea, Plot and Purpose). I compare their beginning of the year scores to their end of the year scores to determine growth.

Dur ing the uni t , I check for understanding by conferencing with students on the tree maps and slides they have created. Using the Inspiration Main Idea Graphic Rubric, students self- assess. Once they have created the main idea graphic page and it meets the criteria in the rubric, students are allowed to print and share their Inspiration graphic page. To cut cost, they can be shared whole group via a projector / laptop. This gives them an audience and a purpose for creating quality slides.

This program has been implemented with my 3rd grade reading groups. It can be used with an age group that works on the skill of identifying main idea. These students are all on ASP’s with goals related to improving their reading ability. This program could be used with small groups, depending on how many classroom computers there are available for student use. It could also be completed by an entire classroom by either rotating through centers to complete the slides or doing them in a computer lab setting.

n MATERIALS / TECHNOLOGY

TO BE USED • Computer• Inspiration software• Odyssey

• SmartBoard

The computers and Inspiration software will be used by students to create the tree maps using picture clipart etc. to enhance.

The Smartboard will be used by teacher to access the Odyssey lessons on main idea. The students will work through the lessons as whole group instruction.

n DIRECTIONS Student Task Description

Remind students that good readers are able to identify main idea and conquer unknown words and identify the author’s purpose. Students will be instructed that it will be their job to create a tree map (thinking map) using Inspiration software to show the main idea of a selected passage in the class story. I show the entire class whole group how to open a new project, use the rapid fire feature and how to use the link feature to create a tree map. To begin with, we read the selected passage together and I model how to find 3 important ideas from the passage. Then how to find 2 or 3 details about each idea. Finally, review all of the information and summarize it into the main idea at the top of the tree.

Lesson Procedure Student Steps

• Students will first read chorally the class Trophies story.

• The student will be given a selected passage from the story. The student will on a half sheet of paper to create a sloppy copy of the Tree Map or they can be given a blank copy of Thinking Maps Map Masters p. 3-11.

• Students will go to the computer to create the Inspiration tree map.

• See Attached example of how the Tree Map was completed.

• Students use the Inspiration Main Idea Graphic Rubric to assess their final product.
