MAP News SEPT 2013 What A* result for MAP students! August was a great month for our GCSE and A-level students. Results days came and went. Once again our students did very well, and I heartily congratulate them. 60 per cent of our Level 3 students have gone on to university this year, that’s a record! And we have seen our Year 7 numbers go up by 14 per cent on last year - it’s really good news. September is nearly over and we’ve had such a busy time: We’ve taken delivery of our fantastic new build, MAP2 finally threw open its doors to its first pupils and, we’ve held a series of really well-attended open events for those wishing to join us next year. Our Year 7s have been busy getting to know MAP and have been getting up to all sorts of activities (see page 3). We’ve also got a brand new prospectus and we’re just getting ready to launch a new website - never a dull moment. We are still working to bring to MAP the 3G all-weather pitch and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) facility, so watch this space for updates. The year has started very well, and I hope that you are as excited to be part of MAP as I am. Nick Ward, Principal

Children wear Jeans for charity

What A* result for MAP students!

Children and staff at Marine Academy Primary (MAP2) and Shining Stars nursery donned their best jeans on ‘Jeans for Genes Day’ 2013 (Friday 20th Sept).

The staff and chi ldren wore their jeans  and took part in a number of activities as well as making a donation of £1 each to wear their jeans on the Day.

Siobhan Easton, Head of Early Years said: “The children attended an assembly about the charity, and have learnt about the various wonderful things that the money we have raised can do for other children. We’ve also been making gingerbread men to ice with blue icing, so they can wear jeans too!

Genetic disorders affect 1 in 25 children in the UK – that’s more than 30,000 babies born each year. Their associated health problems mean that genetic disorders are the biggest cause of death of children aged 14 and under.

Miss Easton said: “We are beginning to develop our children’s understanding of charity and fundraising and that it’s really important to help those children who are not as lucky as us.

Marine Academy Primary (MAP2) has opened its doors for the first time this month.

Headed up by Aaron Meredith, MAP2 was first proposed in December 2011, with the core aims to provide much n e e d e d p l a c e s a n d t o r a i s e achievement, especially in English and Maths, and raise aspirations amongst its community, inspiring pupils to fulfill their potential.

This now means that children can start at MAP’s Shining Stars nursery as babies, then onto MAP2 at Reception age and then move through to Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) and the Academy’s 6th Form, creating a 0 to 19-years+ school.

Mr Meredith said; “We’ve been working hard over the summer to get everything ready for our new arrivals, and I must say that I am absolutely delighted with the progress we’ve made.

“MAP2 will make a huge difference to this area, its such an opportunity. We have a huge amount of support from our  community and sponsors and we have created an exciting and innovative curriculum.

“The MAP2 curriculum is broken down into four main stages. These stages reflect the key stages of the National Curriculum and encompass the marine theme as an organising principle.

“Plymouth's past and present is intimately connected with the sea and has been the departure for some of history's greatest adventures: the sailing of the Mayflower and founding of the New World, Sir Francis Drake's defeat of the Spanish Armada and Captain Cook's search round unmapped territory.

“We are using the pupils’ own heritage a n d t h e e n t e r p r i s i n g t h e m e s o f exploration and discovery as a basis for curriculum innovation.”

MAP2’s Key Stages are known as the following:

Creators - Foundation Stage (Reception)Discoverers - Key Stage 1 (Y1 and Y2)Explorers - Lower Key Stage 2 (Y3 and Y4)Pioneers - Upper Key Stage 2 (Y5 and Y6)

Nick Ward, principal of Marine Academy said: “It feels like its taken a long time to get to this stage, we’ve really been looking forward to having little creators and discoverers f i l l ing these new classrooms, and now they’re here! It’s a delight to see them.

“We never stand still for long at MAP and now we have this new build under our belt, we’re now looking forward to the brand new MAP2 building opening early next year.”

To learn more about MAP2 we have open events on the 8th of October and the 19th of November. See the website for more details.

Marine Academy Primary welcome’s first pupils...Transition from primary school to secondary school is a big deal at MAP, and we work hard to ensure that this process is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

This year, 51 brand new students came on our summer school. Summer schools are a great way to meet staff and start to forge new friendships. This is what they got up to...

Superhero science – first the group watched Man of Steel (Superman), and then they made spider webs from spaghetti and marshmallows and experimented with electro-magnets (Iron Man and X-men). The group also constructed and raced land yacht models.

The Literacy group made dioramas, told pirate stories, created treasure maps, and went to the cinema to see Monsters University.

The Maths group had a ‘bottle boat challenge’ and tested their creations in a large pool; they looked at navigation and windspeed. This group went to the cinema to see ‘Despicable Me2’.

There were Watersports activities, trips to Paignton Zoo, Surfing and B-B-Qs…

Some students did ‘Sailing & Science’ they had a trip aboard a Tall Ship in The Sound, with a conservation biologist from the National Marine Aquarium.

Students piloted a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) like a mini sub, with a camera that fed images back to a laptop on the boat; they also trawled for plankton and dissected fish! (Eugh!)
