From the beginning, the mission of the MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival was to showcase Downtown Fort Worth. The festival began in 1986 as the vision of Robert Bass, and it has grown to become the top-ranked arts festival in Texas and one of the top three in the U.S.

Downtown Fort Worth has evolved, too, and today is acknowledged to be one of the most vibrant urban areas in the country. In Sundance Square, you can explore 35 historic blocks filled with great restaurants, shops, night spots, performance spaces, movies and galleries. Head toward the south end of Downtown for more cool clubs and restaurants, plus the Omni Fort Worth Hotel, the Sheraton Fort Worth Spa and Hotel, and the Water Gardens.

We’re so lucky to have one of the best Downtowns – and one of the best Downtown festivals – right here in our own back yard.

DFWII: ThE PRoDucER oF ThE FESTIvAlThe organization behind MAIN ST. is downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc. (dFWII), which is involved in many charitable, educational and public-purpose activities downtown. dFWII uses the funding from MAIN ST. to continually raise the quality of the event and improve Fort Worth’s downtown. The organization also produces the Chesapeake Energy Parade of lights and the Sundance Square Christmas

Tree.

dFWII is associated with downtown Fort Worth, Inc., (dFWI) a private, non-profit organization that serves as an advocate for everyone who lives, works and plays downtown. dFWI manages the Fort Worth Public Improvement district #1 (PId), which provides maintenance and landscaping, promotions and marketing, security enhancement, transportation and planning for the center city. dFWI also oversees the downtown Tax Increment Financing district (TIF), which is designed to attract investment, support tourism and convention business, spur development and fund public improvements. The TIF also underwrites the free parking program downtown.

Help support downtown’s only advocacy organization through membership and volunteerism. For more information, visit www.dfwi.org. Get year-round updates about downtown at www.facebook.com/downtownfortworth.

So Many Awards, We’re Blushing.MAIN ST. competed with the world’s top festivals and events to win the 2011 Grand pinnacle Award, and more than a dozen others, at the International Festivals and Events (IFEA) Conference. In fact, MAIN ST. has won the Grand pinnacle Award (best in its class) for the third time in four years for its marketing and promotions. MARIAN “MIMI”

DAMRAUER, 2011 BEST OF SHOW WINNERIn 2011, for the second straight year, fiber

artist Mimi Damrauer received the top honor at our festival. She’s best known for her textile collages of

circles, lines and squares. All of her art is handmade and incorporates her colorful, hand-dyed fabrics. “I am inspired by looking around me at the sidewalk

cracks, the way old bricks lay out, the crooked lines of a telephone pole in India, the color of

the ocean in Costa Rica or the stones on the beach in Italy.” Be sure to visit her

booth for the latest work!

Fine Arts & Crafts ShowcaseThe nationally recognized art showcase takes center

stage, transforming Downtown Fort Worth into the biggest outdoor art gallery in the country. From

the Tarrant County Courthouse to the Fort Worth Convention Center, MAIN ST. artists weave a diverse blend

of colors, textures and shapes. For art lovers, this is paradise. And the artists love it, too – millions of dollars in art is sold at the

festival each year.

This a juried art fair, which means that artists must submit their work to a jury of experts before exhibiting here. The 2012 Artist Selection Jury – William Bailey, Anitra Blayton, Chris Dahlquist, Michael pavlovsky and pam Summers– did an outstanding job this year. Of the 1400 artists who applied to exhibit at this year’s festival, only 225 were chosen for exhibition. Mediums range from sculpture, painting and photography to woodcarvings, glasswork, jewelry, fashion and multimedia.

On the first day of the show, another jury will select the best of the 2012 Exhibiting Artists, so look for the booths displaying prize banners. MAIN ST. will award more than $10,000 in prize money to artists this year.

Don’t miss our Emerging Artists on 3rd Street. They’re just starting out as exhibiting artists, but we think you’ll agree that they demonstrate plenty of skill and talent.

The Biggest Gallery in the U.S.

Keep an eye out for the special “Collector’s Tags” on our artist booth signs. These tags indicate purchases have been made here by members of our Collector’s Club. Members of this exclusive group commit to spending between $150 and $500 on art at the festival. They also enjoy fun social opportunities and a special reception and viewing of the Gerald Albright concert on Thursday night. Check out more information online to see how you can join this weekend, or become a member in 2013!

MAIN ST. Educational programsKids Get Creative

Growing Young ArtistsThis successful outreach program brings the talents of MAIN ST. artists and the opportunities of the festival to middle and high school students in the Fort Worth ISD. This program has two components, each supported by a grant from XTO Energy:

Artist-in-Residence ProgramSeveral of our 2012 MAIN ST. artists will visit area schools to show their work and give insights to students about a career in visual art. Selected students will visit MAIN ST. and get a “behind the scenes” look at the operations of a major arts festival.

Young People’s Art Fair Support the next generation of artists! The Young people’s Art Fair – located in the “MAIN ST. Creates!” area – features the work of more than 300 young artists from the Fort Worth community. The fair will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children must be accompanied by a parent at all times during the show. Last year, more than 200 young artists sold more than $8,000 worth of art!

“Go Green” Initiative. We’re working hard to reduce our carbon footprint through partner-ships with the Tarrant Regional Water District, Green Mountain Energy, Waste Management, Inc. and Bicycles, Inc. In 2011, we recycled over 80% of the bottles and cans left behind at the festival. To reduce our use of public landfills, we use biodegradable plates, cups and eating utensils. Festival staff also recycles 100% of the oil and grease used to prepare the food. Artists and vendors participating in our “Go Green!” initiative are identified with a green thumbprint.

Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy, is generously donating 73 metric tons of carbon offsets – enough to offset all of the carbon dioxide emissions generated by this year’s

festival! Drop by their booth at 4th and Main and find out more about pollution-free electricity. www.greenmountainenergy.com
