Dear Members,
Greetings from Mahratta Chamber of Commerce,
Industries and Agriculture. I am glad to connect with
you all once again in the second year of my tenure as
the President of MCCIA.As the Chamber completes its
84th year of existence, we surely have covered a lot of
ground and our contributions to the Pune Region are
quite evident.
The Economy:
The Indian Economy is definitely showing signs of
further revival and growth with the good management
of the macro economy. Off late the business
perceptions have improved further and it appears that
the investment scenario especially in the private
sector will improve in the latter half of this year,
considering the growth in the consumer demand. This
year we saw the stabilization of GST to a great extent
and the initial predicament of the industry in terms of
implementation getting over. The historic landmark
reform in the indirect tax regime has definitely
contributed positively to the Economy. GST has not
only formalized the entire trade and business but has
eliminated certain major hurdles in the domestic trade.
The collection of GST is moving fast to one trillion
marks and the increasing collection again justifies this
timely step taken by the Government. The Industry is
definitely looking forward to the other desired reforms
in the area of Direct Tax and Ease of Doing Business. I
feel that the Government will maintain this tempo of
reforms to take the growth in GDP to the much desired
level of 8 %.
I also appreciate and give credit to the Government for
the developments brought out in the infrastructure of
the country. Rapidly expanding national highway net
work, achievements in rural electr i f icat ion,
improvements in docks, airports, and transportation
systems would certainly contribute to more
investment, development and the growth of the
Economy. There are many more policies of the
Government such as the National Policy on Bio fuels
which need definite mention and appreciation. India's
improved ranking in World Competitiveness can
largely be attributed to the substantial Improvement in

Infrastructure. India's economy has rebounded
strongly from July 2017, after several quarters of
slowdown.
Pune as the Smart City:
As I write this report The Ministry of Housing and Urban
Affairs, Government of India published its “Ease of
living Index 2018 “and in the report the City of Pune
has secured the first rank. Indeed a pleasing
achievement. We at MCCIA have always been guided
by our objective of making Pune a livable city and
today we have achieved that status. I must
congratulate the Central, State and local government
and citizens who have helped this city to reach to this
rank. Pune has already been on the transformation
phase of the Smart Cities. There are many a miles yet
to be traversed. The challenges are to solve the
mobility problem of the citizens through an increased
use of public transportation, improving the road net
work, streets, footpaths and junction designs,
development of ring roads and other infrastructure.
Moving towards Smart City, we need to have
equitable water distribution across the city, water
conservation by recycling of waste water and other
techniques of eff ic ient water management.
Implementation of the Swachh Pune Mission with
100% waste segregation at the source and efficient
Solid Waste Management System is equally
important.
The Smart City needs to consider, using energy
efficiently. New energy efficient, green buildings with
solar power and smart grid set-up, would serve the
purpose. Beautifying the city is another step in that
direction. Pune has already started the metro work
and the citizens will reap its benefits soon enough.
The Chamber participated in the initial planning
discussions and meetings of the Smart City Project.
Member's feedback, suggestions and requirements
were communicated to the concerned authorities.
MCCIA he lped in ident i f y ing in te rnat iona l
collaborators and cooperation and was also in
dialogue with the Municipal Commissioner and
Authorities who are working on the Smart City Project.
MCCIA's Milestones:
I present before you some of the initiatives taken by
MCCIA during the year 2017-18. Our Memberships
base of 3000 plus Members has strengthened the
Chamber even further. During the year as many as
1672 individuals from member organizations
benefitted by the Visa Recommendations letters for
55 different countries. In our effort to strengthen the
international interface, we received 27 International
Delegations during the year. The Chamber
conducted more than 234 programs, seminars,
workshops and conferences that resulted into greater
interactions with more than 1040 Members. Our world
class infrastructure facilities benefitted more than 800
organizations during the year. 600 delegates from
more than 120 organizations availed of the GST
Helpdesk set up to guide our Members.
I am happy to share with you that the fifth Office of
MCCIA has been established in the Hadapsar
Industrial Estate. Set up in a large area of 17,000 sq
feet, the facility extends its services to the nearby
industrial belts including Ramtekdi, Hadapsar,
Magarpatta, Handewadi, Mundhwa and Jejuri MIDC.
The office with its World Class Infrastructure caters to a
large Industrial Base.
The Agriculture and Food Processing Committee
organized several industrial visits to Food processing
units to understand the functioning. This benefitted
more than 100 Members of the Chamber. Awareness
programs, opportunities in the Agri-Food Export,
Safety and Hygiene in the Food Processing Industry,
Food Industry Conclave were the focus areas of the
Agriculture and Food processing segment at MCCIA.
Similarly efforts were taken to strengthen the Small
Scale Enterprises. During the year 5 new Lean
Clusters were established leading to a total of 14 Lean
clusters established by MCCIA so far.
With the idea of making college graduates more
employable and exposing them to different vocations,
MCCIA launched its first Professional Certificate
Course in International Trade for Students. The
course is being conducted by Industry experts and
includes a field visit. Since the inception of the joint
initiative of MCCIA and IL&FS skills, the centre has

trained close to 1000 students and ensured almost
95% employment.
In the area of Defence, we had a series of Vendor
development initiatives to create a synergy between
t he De fence Manu fac tu r ing , p rocu r ing
Establishments and the SME segment of the
manufacturing Industry.
The Chamber continues to make Representations to
various Government Ministries on behalf of its
Members. The Ahmednagar office of MCCIA has
been very interactive with the industrial cluster of the
region. The Human Resource and Industrial
Relations committee has organized regular
interactions with the Human Resource fraternity of the
Pune Region. The Infrastructure Committee
supported the Bio Energy UrjaUtsav of the Ministry of
Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.
Similarly the IT and ITES Committee took initiative in
bringing IT to the Small and Medium Manufacturing
Enterprises. The Goods and Service Tax
Committee, Foreign Trade Committee, Energy
Committee, Electronics Committee and the Direct
Tax Committee have been regular with their interface
with the Members.
MCCIA Electronic Cluster Foundation was initiated
in 2014, and approved in principal in 2015. During my
tenure, we received the final approval from the Ministry
of Electronics and Information Technology,
Government of India for a Rs. 67 crore project, the
largest Brown Field Cluster in India. Various
formalities, project detailing and appropriate
configuration is under progress.
During 2017-18, MCCIA set up Sustainability Desk to
facilitate, engage and help industry members to
create awareness and adopt sustainability activities
within their facility and to improve their triple bottom
line performance.
In the area of Management and Operations of the
Chamber, many new steps were initiated. One such
step in this direction was the Corporatization in
Management and Governance of the Chamber.
This was felt necessary according to the current
regulation and statute, hence necessary amendment
have been introduced in the Articles of Association.
Several procedures and practices have been
developed and amended to ensure Efficient and
Better Management of the Secretariat.
In terms of development of the Leadership and
Manpower at the Secretariat, human resources
development initiatives have been taken to strengthen
the second in line leaders at the Chamber.
The Chamber promoted institutions such as NAFARI
and Auto Cluster has received substantial attention
and has been further strengthened. The Executive
Board in particular has assisted me in this mission.
My two years tenure as President is now coming to an
end. I will hand over the flag to my successor. I must
say that I had a fulfilling engagement as the President
of MCCIA and have taken forward the good work set
off by my predecessors.
Dr. Anant Sardeshmukh's, term also ends as the
Director General along with me. He has lent me a
major support and has been my partner in the
progress of MCCIA. He has made a tremendous
contribution. Without his direct involvement, many
milestones that I have achieved would not have been
possible. He has initiated many activities and helped
in establishing the MCCIA image. His efforts have
yielded in getting recognition for brand MCCIA on
different platforms. I thank him for his dedicated
service to the Chamber for 11 long years.
Mr. Prashant Girbane will be taking over as the
Director General, MCCIA. I wish him good luck.
It has been a pleasure to work with enthusiastic team
at MCCIA. Past Presidents and my fellow Executive
Board Members supported me in my endevour to
further the vision of the Chamber. This has led to
growth and strengthening of MCCIA role among
Pune's Industry and Commerce landscape. I am
confident that good work will continue.
I welcome the new President and the new Executive
Bodies of the Chamber. I wish the Chamber continued
success in its future journey.
Regards,
Pramod Chaudhari
President

Dear Members,
A Journey of 11 years!
It's the 11th year that I am penning down the message
for the Annual Report of MCCIA. It has always been my
absolute pleasure and indeed a privilege as it is an yet
another opportunity to interact with you. MCCIA's 84th
Annual Report is now being presented to you and I
have the honor to ink and present my views on our
activities for the just concluded financial year 2017-18,
for the last time.
In his message Mr. Pramod Chaudhari, President,
MCCIA has already presented to you some of the
major activities carried out by us. Other activities have
been reported to you through the Annual Report, and
regularly through Sampada and various other
communication channels, which incidentally have
expanded because of the rapidly developing
multimedia platform. It must have been a pleasant
experience for you to see enhanced presence of
MCCIA in multimedia through Twitter, Facebook, and
LinkedIn. The following pages of the 84th Annual
Report gives details of some of the activities carried
out by the various committees, during the year under
review. At the outset you will certainly join me in
appreciating the various committees for their good
work.
Since 2007, I had the privilege to work with six
Presidents, to attend 67 meetings of the Executive
Committees, almost equal number of meetings of the
office bearers, about 13 Annual General Meetings and
more than 2000 other meetings, seminars, programs;
absolutely an absorbing, educating, learning
interaction with you the Members of MCCIA and
others. The Chamber has seen a growth in its activities
and financials in this period of 2007- 2018,which is
clearly evident from the growth in total revenue; from
about 5 crores in 2007 rising to about 12 crores in 2018
with an Compounded Annual Growth Rate ( CARG) of
8 %. At the same time the reserves and surplus have

escalated from about 18 crores to 44 crores;
registering a CARG of 9%. During this period we saw
new modern, expanded, state of the art infrastructures
coming up at additional places like Hadapsar, Bhosari
and Ahmednagar expanding its activities. The
activities at all the centers increased by many folds
thus ensuring presence of MCCIA being felt by a larger
audience at many places, platforms, medias and
forums. In this expansion phase whatever we did,
received acclamation and recognition from the likes of
“Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of
Commerce and Industries”( CACCI) as outstanding
big Chamber, “National Accreditation Board for
Education and Training's (NABET) Diamond Rating,
Awards as best magazine for Sampada on many
occasions and various others. Again it is the
recognition for MCCIA which kept the MCCIA flag
flying high, being noticed by many, nationally and
internationally.
The progression of MCCIA activities has been in the
direction of Good, Better, Best. Still in this dynamic
ecosystem, we see many more initiatives to be
introduced, programs to be conducted and problems
to address. There are challenges in it but an
organization like MCCIA needs to take upon the same.
A Chamber primarily plays a role of advocacy on
behalf of its Members. The role becomes more
relevant when we are in dialogue with our Members in
understanding their view point, their needs and also
their difficulties. We did some work in this area but
there is no doubt that we need to cover many more
miles to see that this activity is established to
everybody's expectations and benefit.
MCCIA is primarily an association of Manufacturing
organizations as majority of its members come from
this segment. On this backdrop, Manufacturing
assumes a greater importance. We worked in the area
of capacity and capability building of MSMEs which
are today an integral and important part of MCCIA.
The September 2009, Government of India, Ministry of
MSME's Lean Manufacturing cluster scheme
continues at MCCIA and in this year our tally went to 14
clusters so far with 150 Members under its wings.
MCCIA's efforts to enroll many more members will
continue as the objectives have been to make
maximum number of our MSMEs Lean, Competitive
and Efficient. In the year under report, initiatives to
bring OEMS and MSMEs on a platform of vendor
development were also organized, especially with
large PSU Manufactures like Mazgoan Docks,
Railways and private sector manufacturers like L&T
and Mahindra. More such activities are definitely
required and MCCIA will certainly continue with it.
In terms of preparedness for Industry 4.0 and IoT, we
made a beginning of I.T. in Manufacturing. This
initiative is at a very nascent stage but we are sure that
it would take some definite shape in the years to come.
Food Processing is yet another opportunity of growth
for Pune Region. It also needs to adopt new
technology, efficient and lean manufacturing
practices. MCCIA organized many seminars and
programs which introduced the challenges, changes
that need to be adopted for tomorrow. Manufacturing,
be it Engineering or Food Processing is slowly but
surely gaining momentum. We have in front of us
targets to take Manufacturing contribution to GDP to
at least 25 % . India is surely witnessing a wave of
growth in Manufacturing. On this backdrop the
MSMEs need to position themselves well to take
advantage of this anticipated growth and the
Chamber needs to roll up its sleeves to ensure that our
MSMEs become more competitive through various
initiatives like the above. This would certainly be the
agenda for the years to come. Our skill development
program, joint ly with IL&FS ski l ls, ensured
employabi l i t y w i th sk i l l deve lopment . The
Entrepreneurship and Innovation development
programs progressed well. The unique and extremely
challenging initiative of Technology Transfer yielded
some results. After a lot of effort we could achieve one
transfer from an academic lab to a commercial
establishment. It is an extremely difficult activity which
needs lot of patience and persistence. Yet it has its
own need and importance.

There were many more programs conducted by our
other committees and they have received a mention in
the report presented to you .The limitations of space
would not allow me to elaborate further.
During this year and my tenure at MCCIA, we had an
excellent relationship with the media and with their
help we established MCCIA Brand very convincingly.
Our activities, programs, releases, received excellent
coverage. This has helped us in promoting our
Chamber and activities to a larger number of people. I
owe a sincere gratitude to all of them.
My eyes, ears, arms, my colleagues in secretariat
were always with me. I wouldn't have achieved
anything without them. In them I found an excellent
team. May I extend on my personal behalf, sincere
gratitude to each one of them when I bid a goodbye to
them, my days now would be melancholic without
them.
My progression at MCCIA wouldn't have been so
demonstrative without the guidance, advice, support,
cooperation, faith, confidence reposed in me by all the
six Presidents under whom I worked. I have no words
to express my heartfelt gratitude towards them. I
would cherish the memories of my association with
them and I remain indebted to them for all the
development they brought out in me. My sincere
Thanks to them. All the Past Presidents, Office
Bea re rs , Execu t i ve Commi t tee Members ,
Chairpersons of various committees, and ultimately
you all have also supported, motivated and
cooperated with me to deliver results. I extend my
sincere Thanks to all of you.
I am also Thankful to various Government officials,
Foreign Trade Agencies and others who extended
cooperation in my various endeavors.
At the close of the working hours of 29th September
2018, I will conclude my tenure at MCCIA, relinquish
the position of Director General. A journey of 11 years
concludes with extreme satisfaction. On this day I
hand over my charge to Mr. Prashant Girbane, an able
leader and I am sure he would give new direction,
leadership and success to MCCIA as its Director
General.
As I conclude the fol lowing words of Lord
R. B. Haldane, resonate in my ears, "What ultimately
matters in one's life is not the result - the success or
failure - but the quality of work, the passion that is
brought to bear upon anything that one takes in his
hand." Indeed I started, continued with passion and
gave my best; rest you all are the judges.
All the Best to All of You!

Director General Designate’s MessageDear Members,
I am excited to embark on a new journey in my role as
the Director General of the prestigious MCCIA, fromst1 October this year.
It is an honour to work for an institution that is growing
from strength to strength over the last eight decades.
Every day as I enter the lobby of the Chamber and
glance at the images of the past Presidents of the
Chamber, from its visionary founder Shri A. R. Bhat to
Shri S.L. Kirloskar to Dr. N. A.Kalyani to Shri Rahul
Bajaj, and all the others, I recollect growing-up reading
about, and getting inspired, by most of them. They all
continue to inspire me today as I endeavor to make my
own little contribution in my role as the Director
General.
I am thankful to the serving Board of Directors and the
President Shri Pramod Chaudhari for the opportunity
given to me to serve at this institution that is
synonymous with economic development of Pune
region. Last few months, working as the Director
General Designate gave me the wonderful opportunity
to learn under the guidance of Shri. Pramod
Chaudhari.
Stakeholders of our Chamber are well aware of
significant contributions made to the Chamber by my
predecessor Dr. Anant Sardeshmukh. I admire his
patience and grace in conducting the business of
MCCIA over the last decade. I intend to take forward all
the good work initiated by Dr. Sardeshmukh to its
logical conclusion in my stint.
My experience with the United Nations Organisations,
the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Pune
International Centre will continue to remind me about
the nature of this institution (as an 'association' of
independent nations, companies or individuals) and
its governance structure. I will look forward to take
mandate and guidance from the 'Board of Directors'
and the President in shaping ongoing and new
initiatives of the Chamber. I am also excited about
working with the new President who will take over from
the date of the AGM in 2018 and each one of them
thereafter.
Every time I look at the logo of the Chamber, I
understand the raison d'être and that is you all -
Members of MCCIA. We look forward to continue to
listen to you and serve you as best as we can under the
charter of this Chamber.
The last few months have given me an opportunity to
interact with team MCCIA. I am thrilled about the
potential to collectively deliver even more in the next
few quarters/years. This great institution that was
started in the era of my grandparents has served so
well in the era of my parents and my own. While the
Executive Council, 'Board of Directors' and the
President join hands to safely transition even stronger
institution in the era of my children, I feel fortunate to be
in a position to make my own little contribution in the
role and responsibility given to me.
With Warm regards,
Prashant Girbane

International Interface
International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the
Pacific 2017 (ISAP 2017) conference in Yokohama,
Japan
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies
(IGES), Japan and the United Nations University
Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability
(UNU-IAS), Japan jointly organized the Ninth
International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the
Pacific 2017 (ISAP 2017) on 25-26 July 2017 at
Yokohama, Japan. Dr. Anant Sardeshmukh, Director
General was an invitee for the conference. ISAP is held
once a year with a timely theme in the context of
sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region to
promote discussions with frontline experts and
diverse stakeholders. On this occasion a meeting of
Japan-India Technology Match Making Platform
(JITMAP) formed by IGES and TERI, New Delhi for
promoting the dissemination of Japanese Low
Carbon Technologies (LCTs) in India was held. Dr.
Anant Sardeshmukh, Director General made
presentation on Low Carbon Technology for MSMEs in

rdThe 83 AGM of Mahratta Chamber of Commerce,
Industr ies and Agriculture, was held onth20 September, 2017.
The Chief Guest for the program was Mr. Sanjiv Bajaj,
Managing Director, Bajaj Finserv. Dr. Naushad
Forbes, Chairman, Forbes Marshall presided over
the program. Mr. Pramod Chaudhari welcomed the
guests and said that it was a great opportunity to listen
to the two home-grown business leaders.
The theme for the AGM was Emerging Indian
Economy: From Financial Services to Industrial
Growth.
Mr. Sanjiv Bajaj spoke on “How Digitisation is
Changing Business”. He presented an interesting
canvas on the transformation of the business scenario
over the centuries and past few decades. He stated
that, as businesses were built over 200 years, some
traditional levers helped them achieve great heights.
Mr. Sanjiv Bajaj highlighted on the changes in the
business scenario in the second half of last century. It

rdDr. Naushad Forbes, Director, Forbes Marshall Pvt. Ltd. speaking at 83 Annual General Meeting
th84 Annual Report (2017 - 2018)
saw the beginning of internet and digitization. That
gained a quick momentum. He said that, suddenly we
saw new entrepreneurs on the horizon. Telephone
took eighty years to reach 100 million customers, but
Facebook reached that figure in just four years. The
scale created by digital economy is unbelievable.
Mr. Bajaj shared with the audience how Bajaj Finserv
transformed itself over the last decade. With the
adoption of cloud based technology, it can approve
the loan proposals within 30 seconds of the
application. Earlier, it took over 3 days for this process.
In the case of insurance too, it is the first company to
allow the customers to use their camera to upload
pictures for claims. He added that, we have to think of
ways to become a better Customer Service Company.
The emphasis should be on a culture of lean
operations, adaptation, experimentation, learning
from mistakes and leveraging partnerships.
Dr. Naushad Forbes spoke on the “Future of India's
Manufacturing”. He stressed the importance a
technology driven manufacturing process. He
emphasised that India is one of the top ten performing
economies for many years. Could we achieve 10 %
annual GDP growth in the next 25 years? Only then
could we promise a decent living to millions of people.
Our aspiration is to reach 25 % of GDP by 2022. For
this, we should focus more on technology and
international business. He further added that, we
need to work on a mechanism to make our companies
global.
Dr. Forbes added that it would not be correct to state
that Indian economy is seeing a jobless growth. It is
true that we have not created millions of jobs in the
formal sector over the last several years. In order to tap
the job potential in formal sector, we need to undertake
labour reforms in the country. Companies also have to
change their mind set about employing more people,
which is essential for the manufacturing sector to
grow.
We need to make efforts to ensure improved
productivity of our service sectors including tourism.
Other informal sectors such as driving and security
agencies have seen tremendous growth over the last
few years in big cities and regions.
Dr. Anant Sardeshmukh, Director General-MCCIA rdproposed a vote of thanks. The 83 Annual General
Meeting was thus concluded.
