AusCham expresses its gratitude and appreciation to Austrade and the Embassy/Consulate for the ever strengthening relationship with the Chamber.

• All Monthly Board Meetings are held via video conference in the offices of Austrade in Hanoi and HCMC

• Representatives of Austrade and DFAT attend every Board meeting and share non confidential information that assists in planning and seeking new members

• Co hosted business briefings in Hanoi and HCMC for “Why ASEAN and Why Now?”

• AusCham will play a support role in Taste of Australia 2016 which should also lead to additional memberships

• Support of Consul General and Ambassador at AusCham events

• Invitations to relevant official functions

• Offering speakers for AusCham’s business briefings including Australia’s Ambassador to ASEAN and the Northern Territory’s Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries.

2. Highlights, 2015 - Part I

• As a national chamber held events in Hanoi, Hue (one only), Hoi An, Danang, HCMC and supported the establishment of the Overseas Alumni Group in Vung Tau. Also Can Tho.

• Established a relationship with HAWEE (HCMC Association of Women Executives and Entrepreneurs) and supported each other’s events

• Broadened membership base by actively recruiting organisations from Australia including 15 universities, the Victorian Government’s Business Office for SEA and the Australian Institute for Company Directors

• Clipper Race: used AusCham’s Travel Members to invite industry professionals to the “Danang” tourism expo in Sydney when the clippers docked there prior to Christmas.

2. Highlights, 2015 - Part II

• Conducted a number of factory visits with members from AusCham, HAWEE and RMIT’s E/MBAs

• Used business experts at business events who were also Australian Alumni to raise the profile of Alumni in the workplace (eg Review of the World Bank’s Vietnam 2035 Report, the Real Estate Symposium and the Urban Development of HCMC symposium.

• Launched the Inaugural AusCham RMIT Executive MBA Scholarship. To be repeated this year.

• Using an RMIT MBA Syndicate to review AusCham

• Celebrated the promotion of Alumni to very senior positions such as Nguyen Manh Hung (GD, Viettel Group), Cu Anh Tuan (GD, ABBank) and Pham Van Dung (CEO, Ford Vietnam)

2. Highlights, 2015 - Part III

• Encouraged a number of members to start recruiting Vietnamese graduates from Australian universities while they are still in Australia and then providing them with an internship in their Australian office prior to returning

• Received an increasing number of requests from members and sponsors to speak at their events.

• Forging closer relationships with Austrade and DFAT with programs such as Taste of Australia and “Why ASEAN and Why Now?”

• Played a significantly bigger role with VBF in 2015

• Vietnam Airlines provided two pages of complimentary coverage in its in flight magazine for the Saigon Melbourne Cup event (cash sponsors expressed interest in sponsoring again in 2016). Trialled event as vehicle to promote Australian F&B e.g. wine from NSW, beer from SA, beef from QLD and inspired by event from Vic.

• Launched AusCham’s National Grand Final Scrambles: golf games in three cities on the same day; Grand Final eve

2. Challenges, 2015

• Support for events in their second year; i.e. Saigon Melbourne Cup and ANZAC Great Debate did not build on the first year and therefore failed to establish their credentials as annual events on HCMC’s calendar

• Were not able to hold the 2nd Annual “Welcome Back Aussie Alumni” events due to a lack of sponsorship support

• Efforts to actively engage the Aussie Alumni have proved challenging

• Holding events in 2nd tier cities has not generated any additional income

• Factory tours provide a service but no additional income

• Business briefings provide a service but only provide modest additional income (some of the other chambers hold up to 4 events in a single week meaning there is competition for attendees)

• Australia/Vietnam business content on Website, LinkedIn, and Facebook has had a modest impact on hits/reach etc and therefore, advertising revenue

4. Growing Corporate Sponsorships and Memberships, 2016

Sponsorship market remains tight in Vietnam

• Saigon Melbourne Cup: Cash sponsors remain committed. Board needs to consider how to more effectively engage with target market to boost numbers

• Build an annual mining forum modelled on AusCham’s real estate symposium that would attract Australian miners and aim to encourage discussion with VN Government circles

• Push into agribusiness for Australian companies entering market

• Continue investigating the feasibility of recruiting students in Australia for internships in Vietnam under RMIT that would generate a commission

4. Business Working Groups, 2016

AusCham is looking to introduce a Business Working Group from the following list with priority being given to those groups generating the most active interest. Pick the low hanging fruit!

• Business Connect: By using modern platforms such as LinkedIn

• Government Connect: With Australian government, Austrade, visiting dignitaries etc.

• Mentor Program: Includes a database of experienced, relevant business savvy people in Vietnam

• Alumni Program: Involve AusCham Alumni members in business working groups

• Intern Program: For Australian businesses wanting to more effectively engage with Asia

• ASEAN & Asia Networking: Better promote and engage with Australia Business Asia

• Information: Review and update information provided on website

• Referrals: Review current system to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

• Gateway to ASEAN: Operating in Vietnam could be seen as a great gateway to the rest of ASEAN (and Asia).
