Page 1: Magnetically Levitated Propeller - EDGE

Create a magnetically levitated propeller is our mission. A magnetically levitated propeller is a single axis propeller lifted through a magnetic bearing system. Overall it should follow limitations of the intellectual property and most importantly be a proof of concept project, showing that a magnetically levitated propeller is possible.

A propeller works by creating power through its rotational velocity. The rotation of the propeller causes thrust to be produced, which in turn is the objective of a propeller. Along with the production of thrust they create pressure differences as well due to the acceleration behind the blade from the front of the blades’ foils and what is passing through it (depending on the environment so it can be air or some type of liquid).

Engineering Requirements

The design was created for our customer, Dr. Day who is a professor at RIT. He wanted a proof of concept prototype to prove that this idea could work and be implemented in a submersible ROV for our sponsor. Boeing is our sponsor and through this design it will allow Boeing to gain an advantage in the ROV market.

CONCLUSION

Magnetically Levitated Propeller

Lack of initial structure caused an iterative process to lay solid ground workOverall propeller needs to have all sections levitated All axes needs to be controlled in one fixtureLater projects can focus on making the propeller submersibleListen to advices given by guide Customer was happy with the project and supports the resultsProved the concept works in some aspects

Propeller isolated from motor/suspended from the axleActive control from electromagnets (axial/lateral direction)Stator mounted on outside of the propellerInside the housing/fixture will be the motorPWM signals to the motor will spin the propeller & create thrust
