Form: AB

Teaching Suggestions: •Teach with speech, using vocal inflection of low “boom” and high “chick.” •Add hand claps, “boom” on palm of hand and “chick” on top edge of hand with speech. •Transfer claps to hand drum with soft mallet and continue with speech. Play “boom” on head of hand drum and play “chick” on top rim of hand drum.

Notes: •Note heads below line in music score indicate playing on head of hand drum with soft mallet. •Note heads above the line indicate playing on the rim of the hand drum with stick of mallet.

Movement suggestions: •Circle formation, mallets in right hand, hand drums in left hand.

A section •Walk CCW, 12 steps. Turn right for four beats - 180 degrees. •Walk CW, 12 steps. Turn right for four beats - 45 degrees (to face center of circle). B section •Measures 1 and 2: Play rim notes (”chick”) on own drum; play head notes (”boom”) on neighbor’s drum head to the right. •Measures 3 and 4: Play on head of own drum while turning in place to the right (360 degrees) for six beats (”turn around and turn around and turn around”). “Freeze” on Beat 7 (facing center of circle). On Beat 8, speak “Woo!), while lifting drum over head.

B

Form: A - 8x B - 8x C - 8x D - 10x

Teaching Suggestions: •Speak through each section. •Add pats, snaps and claps. •Discuss the dotted quarter note/eighth note figure. (My kids naturally swing the C section) •Perform with recording using the given form. •Add recording and perform.

Extension: •Transfer A section rhythm to feet while moving around the room in scattered formation. •Perform with recording. •Students choose partners (one to be the Pink Panther and one to be the Inspector); perform the following a second time with the recording. (Allow students time to create movement for the C section).

Form: A Partners move in scattered formation. (Panthers following Inspectors) B Perform standing still substituting a partner clap for each snap.

C Partners create movement (hand game, actions, etc.) to illustrate the C section rhythm.

Note: On the repeat of the A section, Panthers and Inspectors reverse roles.

(5th Grade Objectives: dotted quarter/eighth, rhythm patterns, phrase)

Treble Clef Words

Process:

•Before presenting the cards, review the treble clef lines and spaces. •Present one of the cards, leading students to discover the notes on the card spell a word. Present another card and the class in unison identifies each pitch as the teacher points to each note. Afterwards, the class speaks the word in unison.

•Present the remaining cards as flash cards; students raise hands when they can identify the word. Remind students that music, like the English language reads from left to right.

Extension:

•Extend to game where two teams sit in parallel lines. The teacher reveals a word card and the first student in each line tries to identify the word. The student that identifies the word first recieves the card, and both students move to the end of the lines. Game continues until all students have had the opportunity to identify a word, and the team holding the most cards wins.

When the Saints Go Marching In(3rd Grade Objectives : pulse, movement, cooperative gameplay)

Process:

•Introduce (or review) melody while accompanying on piano or guitar. •Echo phrase if necessary. •Students sing song while marching in place; repeat marching through space. •Add game.

Game:

•Students march through space while singing song. On the third phrase (”Oh I want to be in that number”) teacher shows a number of fingers (between one and five). Students form circle representing that number by the end of the song, any student left out of a circle is out of the game.

Popsicle Stick Game/Battle(1st Grade Objectives : Ta/Ti-Ti, Rest)Process:

Formation: seated on the floor

•The students (as partners or alone) are given twelve standard popsicles sticks each. •The teacher claps a four-beat pattern while speaking the “Ta’s” and “Ti’s;” Class echoes. •When the teacher says “Go!,” students notate the rhythm using the sticks as shown below. Note: Begin with patterns that use only quarter/eighth notes and then add rests. •When everyone has completed the pattern, choose a student to write the rhythm on the board to check their work.

Battle:

Have two volunteers come to the front of the room with twelve sticks each. The teacher claps a four beat pattern and the players use the sticks to recreate the phrase. The first one to finish with the correct rhythm pattern is the winner and “battles” the next student” (This game is popular with all grades (1st through 5th).
