Magazine Double Page Spread Analysis

NME Double Page Spread

The splash image of the magazine shows the subject of the image to be quite important as they are taking up more than half of the whole double page spread. They are giving the audience a direct address in the image, with quite a confident look , showing they may be quite confident in their selves. They have quite a pop culture look about them with all the bright colours in the picture, this colour scheme is stuck with the bright blue colours with the text. This is all very eye catching to the reader.

There are a lot of links to love in this double page spread as they are called “heartsrevolution” and they are stood very close together almost showing a loving bond. This is then backed up again with the small bit of text underneath the title which says “NME loves”.

The writing on the page has been split into two small columns, on the very far right of the page, taking up about a quarter of the page and the picture takes up the rest. This shows that this band may be more visually appealing than what there is to write about them.

Around the page there are things which look like they have been stuck on like stickers, these are pictures to do with the band in focus, to possibly show you more about what they are like and what they’re lifestyle is like. This could be to make the reader understand a bit more about them and possibly make them feel more comfortable with them. It could also be being used to create an image of what the band are like, as you can see they are stood over a big ice cream and in one of the smaller pictures there is an ice cream van. This may be trying to create an image for the reader that this band is nice and friendly.

Q Double Page Spread

The colour scheme of the double page spread is clearly red, white and black. I think this has been chose as the colour scheme for the double page spread as the rest of the magazine has this colour scheme too, so they are sticking with their conventions. This shows that for my magazine, whatever colour scheme I go for I need to stick to it throughout the whole of the magazine.

The splash image for this double page spread takes up what would be one whole page in the magazine. The subject of the splash image is Jay Z, someone who is big in the rap industry. The fact that it says “RapRadar” on the splash image suggests to me that this is an unlikely convention in this magazine, having a rap artist in it. As this is a rock magazine . In the image Jay Z has quite a stern face on and you cant see his eyes as he is wearing glasses, this leads you to not be able to trust him as you cannot see his eyes. This picture is made to make Jay Z look masculine and slightly intimidating

The headline in the top right hand side of the double page spread is in a bold, easy to read font. It has two colours in it and it turns to red as soon as it says “JAY – Z” This could be to make it more visually attractive to the reader so the reader likes it when they are reading the magazine.

At the bottom middle of the double page spread there is a very small Q logo, this is to reinforce to the reader that they are reading Q.

The writing about Jay Z on the right hand side of the double page spread is split into two columns which gives it quite a formal look. There are then throughout the article big capital letters just dotted around at the start of some paragraphs. These may have some significance to Jay Z or they may just be being used to make it more appealing and exciting to the readers eye. Right in the middle of the article there is a huge capital latter J, This clearly relates back to Jay Z. This may be being used to make it more interesting to the reader. Or it may be a convention of the magazine that they could do with all the special double page spreads based on one person, I have seen it done with Lady Gaga in another Q magazine so it could be used for a lot more people. They could make this a regular thing to again remind the reader that they are reading Q.

Kerrang Double Page SpreadAs you can see in the splash image there is a group of teenagers kicking and stamping on someone in a rabbit costume. I think the splash image has been used to define what the band is like or what they want to come across as like. In this case, intimidating and violent.

The colour scheme of the double page spread does not fit with the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine, as this is red, black and white. And the colour scheme for the rest of the magazine is predominantly yellow, black and white. But I have looked at other double page spreads by Kerrang and they fit with the red, white and black. It shows that this may be a convention of Kerrang

One half of the double page spread is a picture and the other half is an article about the people in the picture. The article on the right hand side is split up into three columns, but it starts around a quarter of the way down the page as the top quarter is taken up by where it says “teen spirit” on a banner of blood and then the strap line underneath it.The splash image has

one member of the band giving a direct address, this may be because she is the main member of the band.

As there is blood along the header of the page, this could be to give you some connotations to the band in the splash image such as blood. This makes you associate them with pain and death as that is what blood is linked too. This may also have been used to make the page a little bit more exciting as that is not a usual thing to have at the top of a page.
