spring flingWhen you wander through some parts of Suzanne Warner Pierot’s garden in Willow, New York, the fragrance of pink Astilbe ‘Bressingham Beauty’ and red Astilbe ‘Bonn’ is particularly pleasant.

ABOVE LEFT: My willingness to experiment led me to plant a few pots of astilbe; the multiyear results have transformed my landscape. ABOVE MIDDLE: Rustic structures blend seamlessly into the landscape. ABOVE RIGHT: Astilbes have the added benefit of attracting butterflies, such as this one visiting white Astilbe ‘Bridal Veil’ and red Astilbe ‘Rheinland’. OPPOSITE: Meandering paths lead to moments of discovery.

in my New York landscape from June until August, a festival of flowers in lavender, pink, red, white, purple. In addition to the varied colors, height offers interest, too, from astilbes as tall as 3 feet, to some that measure a mere 3 inches. More than 20 years ago, I started my 6-acre garden. I went big, planting swaths of ferns and hostas, as well as Pachysandra, Jouttuynia, ginger, sweet woodruff, Aegopodium, Epimedium, and bleeding heart. But what the garden needed after the spring plants, bulbs, rhododendrons, and azaleas had finished blooming was color. I turned to impatiens but discovered they felt too ordinary—and they had

to be replanted every year. Then, quite by chance, I discovered astilbes. I bought several pots of 12 varieties to experiment with and was soon entranced by their gorgeous flowers and beautiful feathery foliage.

Astilbe to the rescueI also discovered astilbe’s best quality: They’re incredibly easy to divide, which means they help fill a garden quickly. After the second year’s growth, I cut the astilbes in half, putting one half of each plant back into the ground and moving the other half to another location. Soon I had thousands of the plants in great swaths of color all over the hill. In such abundance, astilbes’ fragrance became akin to walking through a garden of antique roses.

By chance, I discovered astilbe. I bought several pots to experiment with and was soon entranced.

OPPOSITE: Astilbe ‘Veronica Klose’ offers a color contrast to hosta. ABOVE: Throughout the Zone 5 landscape, I have added an assortment of astilbes to existing beds of hostas and allowed foxglove to self-sow and randomly punctuate the woodland setting.

The right mixWith their fernlike foliage and lovely, lacy spires of blossoms in shades of white, pink, red, and purple, shade-loving astilbes make the perfect foil for additional beds filled with hostas. In fact, astilbe—sometimes called false spirea—and hosta are two of the very best shade-garden companions. They look absolutely wonderful mass-planted together in slightly shady locations, especially with variegated foliage and

different hues in flowers. I also discovered that the right mix of soil is key to a flourishing mix of hillside plant combinations. I fill the bottom of the flower beds with 2 to 4 inches of wood chips. On top of that goes a 2- to 3-inch layer of peat moss followed by 3 to 4 inches of mushroom dirt; I then mix the whole of it together. The astilbes, as well as the hostas and other woodland plants, do fabulously in this acidic soil mixture.

To achieve a look similar to mine, try placing a large, thick foliage plant such as Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’ behind the finer, smaller foliage of astilbe for a stunning display. Since hostas come in virtually every shape, size, color, and texture, use them in layers to fill in with form, color, and texture. Use the colorful spikes of astilbes to tie the shade garden together in a pattern of rhythm, balance, and—yes—even punctuation. Together, hostas and astilbes can add a sense of drama to the home landscape. THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE LEFT: Because my woodland garden is so sprawling, I have divided it into free-form areas surrounded by flat-stone edging. No cement was used in the construction. I purchased ordinary gravel by the truckload for the walking paths. Delicate foxglove loves the woodland conditions, too. Light and dark interplay on the plants’ foliage. A quaint gazebo provides a resting spot to sit and enjoy the garden. OPPOSITE: My house sits atop a hill, and the surrounding gardens wander down to a tumbling stream on the slopes of Mount Tremper. The house is built from barn boards.

Antiques dealer Gaye Rolstad and her husband, George, a former industrial arts teacher, purchased this 1990s Whidbey Island Cape Cod home in 2002 to flip it. Out came the shag carpet. In went shutters, a picket fence, 5" pine flooring, butcher-block counters and a fireplace. By 2004, they had fallen in love with the home’s peaceful and convenient location; they began stripping away its New England lines and finishes, adding 14' to the house, including a library, back entry and powder room. A Pennsylvania native steeped in old-world antiques and design, Gaye wanted this home to reflect a relaxed lifestyle, with authentic French elements. “We stripped the shingles and sold the old boards as salvage,” she says. They heavily plastered the walls and installed old barn and factory beams that George bleached and gave a natural finish. After removing the wall separating the living and family rooms, a rustic fireplace was added. “We are so proud of our fireplace!” Gaye says. “George made the mantel and the surround.” French Country Style 2014 47

Authentic Appeal“I used to be an early-American purist,” says Gaye, “until I discovered European style working with Peter Hageman at The Antique Forum in Seattle.”

Hand-painted European ironstone informs her French-country kitchen design, inspired by an early-1800s L-shaped Swedish cupboard and a 1910 salvage sink. Buttery yellow cabinets, a red-checked Pierre Deux valance and cheerful chair upholstery set a happy scene. A 1720s settle table, a family heirloom, doubles as seating.

George, a charter member of the Northwest Blacksmith Association, forged the handrails on the entry staircase and the Gothic arch detailing on the library fireplace. He also separated and restored a pair of 300-year-old wooden French doors used as entry doors to the house and library.

Upstairs, dormer windows replicate French cottage styling in the bedrooms. Nina Campbell wallpaper enrobes the master bedroom.

“My mission is to preserve our history and heritage through art and architecture,” says Gaye. “Otherwise it will fade away.”

California naturalism. It’s a fitting retreat for a well-traveled woman who became a doyenne of the modern spa movement. In 1940, when she was just 18, Deborah founded the Rancho La Puerta spa in Tecate, Mexico, with her husband, Edmond, a Hungarian expatriate. In 1958 she launched a second spa, the Japanese-style Golden Door near Escondido, California.

Like the gardens of her now-famous spas, Deborah’s home landscape has evolved over time. She bought her Craftsman-style house and 3 untamed acres in the 1950s for just less than $15,000. “The property still had a milking shed for goats,” says Deborah’s daughter, Sarah Livia Brightwood, a landscape designer and current president of Rancho La Puerta.

By the mid-’90s Deborah had added a Japanese garden to the upper slope with the help of designer Takendo Arii. But the old kidney-shape pool looked sad, and the property’s brickwork pitched and rolled like the sea, so Deborah asked her daughter

to overhaul the area. In the pool’s place, Brightwood installed a long, narrow lap pool. Edged with slate coping and lined with a dark, pebbled bottom, it doubles as an understated reflecting pool. A built-in hot tub inhabits one end, and a discreet automatic cover extends from the other.

The surrounding garden posed a greater challenge. The existing terrace was long and narrow, just like the new pool, and to Brightwood, the combination suggested a landing strip. To create the illusion of greater breadth, she called for an emerald swath of grass running diagonally across the terrace and softened the edges with curved beds.

When her mother requested a potting shed and a meditation room styled as a teahouse, Brightwood extended a deck and two outbuildings roughly 12 feet beyond the canyon’s nearest edge, setting them atop piers that plunge deep into the hillside.

The transition between the pool area

and the Japanese garden above was still far from smooth, however. A steep, straight staircase descended from the home’s upper deck, and the backdrop for the pool was an impassable slope. Brightwood replaced the old steps with a more graceful brick-and-timber stairway farther from the house. She also refined the slope with a granite-clad retaining wall at the base.

Above the wall she planted a sun-loving array of plants in a palette of pink, purple, and white. Groundcovers include Geranium incanum and white-flowering Erigeron karvinskianus. Pink Watsonia, Cistus, and hybrid musk roses mingle with white roses such as ‘Iceberg’ and ‘Jeepers Creepers’.

The garden is a retreat for Deborah, who is still active in her 80s. “My garden is not just an adjunct to my home,” she says. “It’s a primary destination. When I wake up and walk outside, it seems as though God is in the heavens, and everything is right with the world.”

54 DIET 2010

( )That extra wiggle around your middle may be doing more harm than you think. Learn the real health risks and how you can shrink your belly for good!

belly busters

By Samantha Heller, M.S., R.D

Spare tire. Potbelly. Muffin top. Love handles. Dunlap syndrome. All of these playful phrases refer to what medical professionals call abdominal obesity. Unfortunately, abdominal obesity is anything but funny. It’s downright dangerous. Research has shown that in young and older people alike, a big belly increases risk for chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer. More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese, and more than half of all U.S. adults have abdominal obesity. The good news? It’s not all doom and gloom. You can whittle your middle and lower your risk of chronic conditions with a few simple lifestyle changes.

Why belly fat is so badScientists used to think fat cells were just a repository for excess fat. In recent years researchers discovered that fat cells release hormones and other substances—some bad, some good. Some of these substances help reduce inflammation while others increase inflammation. The more excess fat you have, though, the more bad chemicals the fat produces. “Fat cells are active little endocrine factories producing a wide array of hormones and other compounds that are poured into the blood,” says Harvey B. Simon, M.D., an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. There are two kinds of belly fat: subcutaneous fat, which accumulates around your middle, and visceral fat, hidden beneath your abdominal muscles. Subcutaneous fat contributes to inflammation and cardiovascular disease. Visceral fat actually plays an important role in our immune system, says Steven Heymsfield, M.D., executive director of clinical sciences at the pharmaceutical company Merck. Visceral fat is filled with white blood cells that mop up microbes and other toxic substances that may escape through the intestinal wall. But too much visceral fat secretes inflammatory chemicals—much more than fat cells found in other parts of your body. Inflammation is what researchers believe leads to chronic diseases. Excessive visceral fat also dumps free fatty acids into the bloodstream, which carries them to the liver. Over time this overflow of fat to the liver causes high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and insulin resistance. Also, excess visceral fat has been linked to fat accumulating around organs such as the heart and liver, impairing their ability to function well, Simon says.

belly busters

ARE you AT RISk?To find out if your belly is putting you at risk, Steven Heymsfield, M.D., says you need to know your waist

circumference and body mass index (BMI).

“Together, waist circumference and BMI can be very helpful in assessing your health risks,” he says.

Checking your waist circumference is as easy as taking out a tape measure and wrapping it around your middle—don’t cheat by sucking in your gut when you take the measurement.

Waistline: Men in the united States should have a waist measurement of 40 inches or less, and women should have a waist that measures 35 inches or less. To find yours, wrap a tape measure around your stomach. The bottom of the tape should be even with the top of your hip bone. keep the tape straight and snug, but don’t let it dig into your skin.

BMI: If you know your weight and height, you can easily find your BMI on a BMI chart (page 142).

Underweight <18.5Normalweight 18.5–24.9Overweight 25-29.9Obese 30orgreater

There is a wide range of waist circumference for any given BMI. Some people carry their weight in their thighs or buttocks and have a reasonable waist size. But if their BMI is over 30, they are considered obese and are vulnerable to the health dangers associated with obesity. Then again, other people may have a BMI under 25 but a large waist circumference, which categorizes them as being abdominally obese. Harvard university professor Harvey B. Simon, M.D., agrees that measurement of girth is a very good predictor of hazard.

“But don’t kid yourself,” he says. “The guy who keeps his 35-inch belt but wears it lower and lower so eventually his belly is hanging over it is not doing himself any favors.”

Only 26 percent of U.S. adults say they engage

more times per week

Weight Loss

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: If you want the flexibility to choose your foods while losing weight and like getting tips from other dieters, this program is for you. People with diabetes or other diet-related health conditions should seek a registered dietitian to tweak the plan for their needs. WHAT WE THINK: The new PointsPlus system and Power Foods designations are good refinements to an already well-rounded, scientifically validated program. It can help steer you toward more nutritious, filling foods as you cut calories and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

WHAT IT COSTS: Pay $20 to join and $12 a week for meetings, or pay $65 for a three-month online membership. Check other pricing options and promotions at weightwatchers.com.

WHO IT’S BEST FOR: If you like convenient, portable entrées and dislike counting calories, this plan may be the answer. A small company-sponsored clinical study of overweight adults with type 2 diabetes showed an average loss of 18 pounds and significantly lower average blood glucose in three months on the Nutrisystem D program.

WHAT WE THINK: Choose the customized menu option and ask a dietitian to help select the most nutritious foods to ensure nutritional adequacy. For best results, take advantage of all the program’s offerings, including the weight maintenance plan.

WHAT IT COSTS: The least expensive weight loss plan is about $11 a day for Nutrisystem foods. Details at nutrisystem.com.

THE GIST: This flexible plan is designed to help you lose 1–2 pounds a week and focuses on healthy eating, regular physical activity, behaviorial changes, and weekly group meetings. Members who have successfully completed the program lead the meetings, share success stories, and offer helpful tips. You also can follow the plan online.

WHAT YOU EAT: You choose foods using the program’s new PointsPlus system, which is based on the latest research regarding what foods are the most filling and how nutrients are processed in the body. Foods with more protein and fiber have lower PointsPlus values, and the most satisfying and healthful choices are called Power Foods. Eating fruits and nonstarchy vegetables is highly encouraged. Eat as much as you’d like of these—now for 0 PointsPlus—to satisfy your appetite.

THE GIST: Structured diet plans and portion-controlled foods are delivered to your door. Access online resources, including a 13-week Mindset Makeover program, to help you modify food-related behaviors and boost activity. Company counselors provide 24/7 telephone support, and dietitians are available for free telephone counseling.

WHAT YOU EAT: Eat 5–6 times a day, including shelf-stable Nutrisystem entrées and fresh-frozen meals. Blues and greens enliven browns and creams in this bedroom, where the color cues come from nature.

Decorating inspiration can come from many places. Designer Jill Vantosh and her team

of associates found their muse in a terrace adjoining this

guest bedroom in an Atlanta showhouse. The terrace

and the view beyond inspired the earthy palette for the

textiles, floor coverings, and artwork that feature birds,

leaves, and other natural motifs. “The whole concept was

more of a garden room because there’s so much light and

there’s the big adjoining terrace,” Vantosh says.

As in nature, elements coordinate rather than identically

match. Turquoise button-back antique chairs sidle up

to a mod Eero Saarinen café table, perfect for lingering

over a good book or a cup of coffee. Contemporary-style

backless daybeds are lounges by day and twin sleepers by

night. On the floor, geometric carpet tiles contrast with

the more formal Oriental rug. The blend of periods and

styles is visually satisfying. “Part of our signature look

is that mix,” Vantosh says. “Even when we’re doing a

very contemporary room, we still like to throw in an old

carved wood piece or a high-back antique French chair.

It’s the wild card.”

Another wild card was the designers’ furniture

placement. The daybeds are stationed in the center of the

room as sofas would be, facing an ottoman that doubles

as a coffee table and nightstand. “People loved this room

when they walked in,” associate designer Patrick Delanty

says. “They were drawn to the openness.”

Pages 38–39: Silk, damask, velvet, and cotton create a pleasing textural blend on the daybeds. The seam that bisects the two-tone draperies emphasizes the grid on the windows and in the carpet tiles. The upper tier of the window treatments, a lace that features a bird design, lets the sun shine in; fabric on the lower portion has a tighter weave for privacy. Opposite: A stylized leaf print makes the connection to the outdoors, as do the light green walls. Left: This curvaceous chair near the French door to the terrace is dressed in green velvet in front and taupe leather in back. Below: The versatile ottoman is a place to prop a tray or put up feet. Brushed stainless-steel bars detail the ends of the daybeds.

This photo: Vintage details, including the steel-wire occasional table by Warren Platner and the colorful majolica on the shelves, add interest to the sitting area. Opposite: Stylish from all angles, antique chairs wear turquoise silk on the front and pale green on the back. “Those colors are a little bit exaggerated for drama,” associate designer Patrick Delanty says.
