Recently, the recruitment of three

outstanding additions to this corps of

scholar-educators has bolstered our

tradition of excellence and diversity.

Joining us this year will be Shayak

Sarkar, a former Rhodes Scholar whose

research focuses on law and economics,

financial regulation, employment law,

and immigration. We are also pleased

to welcome Raquel Aldana, previously

the Associate Dean for Scholarship at

the University of the Pacific McGeorge

School of Law, as UC Davis Vice

Chancellor for Academic Diversity

and a Professor of Law. Joining us

as Director of our new Water Justice

Clinic is Camille Pannu, a graduate

of UC Berkeley School of Law who has

worked for the Center on Race, Poverty

& the Environment. In addition, we are

pleased to recognize Senior Associate

Dean for Academic Affairs Madhavi

Sunder, an influential scholar of law

and culture, intellectual property and

social justice, as the Daniel J. Dykstra

Chair of Law.

The UC Davis School of Law faculty

is committed, diverse, and incredibly

talented. We are thrilled to welcome

these new additions and look forward

to continuing the tradition of scholarly

and teaching excellence at King Hall.

From its inception more than 50 years

ago, UC Davis School of Law has been

committed to scholarly and teaching

excellence, as well as the ideals of social

justice and equality espoused by Dr.

Martin Luther King, Jr., to whom the

law school building is dedicated. Our

King Hall community is committed to

diversity and to serving the greater good

through community service, law reform,

and training the next generation of

attorneys, judges, and leaders. Leading

the way forward is our outstanding

faculty—the only “majority-minority”

faculty of any top-tier American law

school.

The King Hall faculty publishes

prolifically in leading national and

international reviews and journals, and

their books, casebooks, and treatises

are read worldwide. Their scholarship

addresses the most complex legal,

social, and economic issues of our

time, and they frequently are called

upon by national and international

media seeking commentary and

insight regarding current events and

contemporary issues. They are widely

regarded as being among the finest

legal minds in the United States, and

passionately committed to our students,

who are among the most gifted and

diverse of any law school.

Message from the DeanKevin R. Johnson, Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o Studies

Madhavi Sunder, an influential scholar of law and culture

and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, has been

appointed as the Daniel J. Dykstra Endowed Chair at UC

Davis School of Law.

Sunder joined UC Davis School of Law in 1999 and was

elevated to Senior Associate Dean in 2015. She was named a

Carnegie Scholar in 2006 and has been a Visiting Professor

of Law at Yale Law School, the University of Chicago

Law School, and Cornell Law School. Her work traverses

numerous fields, from intellectual property to human rights

law and the First Amendment. She has published in leading

law journals including the Yale Law Journal, California Law

Review, and Texas Law Review, among others. Her article

“IP3,” published in the Stanford Law Review in 2006, ranks

among the top 25 most-cited Intellectual Property articles

of the last decade and as the No. 1 most-cited International

IP article of the past five years. Her book, “From Goods to

a Good Life: Intellectual Property and Global Justice,” was

published by Yale University Press in 2012.

“Dean Sunder is a world-class scholar whose work addresses

some of the most important issues in contemporary society:

technology, intellectual property, and social justice,” said

Dean Kevin R. Johnson. “UC Davis School of Law is proud

to recognize her accomplishments with the Daniel J.

Dykstra Endowed Chair.”

Dean Sunder succeeds Professor and Dean Emeritus Rex

Perschbacher, who was the inaugural holder of the Dykstra

Chair. The chair is awarded to a faculty member who

demonstrates “outstanding scholarship and teaching and is

committed to the ideals of founding School of Law faculty

member Dan Dykstra.”

Camille Pannu directs the Water Justice Clinic, a project of

the Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies. The

Water Justice Clinic partners with stakeholders to improve

Prior to joining King Hall, Pannu served as an Equal Justice

Works Fellow in the southern San Joaquin Valley, where she

worked with low-income residents to combat poverty and

environmental racism by improving infrastructure in rural

communities; assisting community organizations with issues

regarding land-use, zoning, tax, funding, employment

law and nonprofit compliance; and creating “green-collar”

community- and worker-owned enterprises.

She was a law clerk to the Honorable Richard A. Paez
