“To love and be loved,
And for those we love To know they are loved” Bishop Greg Homeming
This week I attended the Lismore Diocese Priest and Principal conference in Coffs Harbour. One of the most inspiring sessions
of the conference was the opportunity to listen to Bishop Greg speak about his vision for the Diocese and Catholic education in
the Diocese of Lismore. The key message he gave, which I have highlighted above, was his vision for all of us to be people of
love. Bishop Greg also spoke about being people of service, humility, living the gospel and being there for others. It seemed fitting
therefore for me to share with you below some wonderful examples of how I witness teachers at MacKillop College doing just
that.
A TEACHER’S WEEKEND Over the weekend I had the opportunity to witness the service that Bishop Greg spoke about being lived out by
teachers of MacKillop College and wanted to share an insight into how lucky your sons and daughters are to
attend such a great school.
Last Friday night seven staff from MacKillop College gave students the opportunity to experience what it was
like to be homeless at the annual Vinnies’ Sleepout. Students and staff braved the cold and wet Friday night to sleep on, or in,
cardboard boxes with nothing more than a pillow and a sleeping bag. Not only did the staff sleep in uncomfortable conditions but
they also had to leave their families for the evening, not getting home to 9.00a.m. Saturday morning since starting work on Friday,
some even cooking up large pots of soup for the students’ dinner.
On Sunday morning I then had the pleasure of watching one of the Tournament of Minds teams competing at the regional
tournament. Thank you to Mrs Palin who gave up her Sunday to allow students this opportunity. From there I headed out to school
where teachers were working with HSC classes preparing for their upcoming exams. We had the Year 11 Drama class rehearsing
for their “AWAY” production. There were teachers at school marking HSC work, teachers coaching sporting teams for upcoming
competitions and I have little doubt a large number of teachers at home marking or preparing meaningful and engaging lessons
for students.
We are truly blessed to have these wonderful people working at MacKillop College. They certainly live out the Bishop’s vision.
TOURNAMENT OF MINDS VICTORY Congratulations to Mrs Mandy Palin and the winning Science and Engineering Team from last weekend’s regional tournament.
Our team now goes on to compete at the state finals in Sydney. All three teams represented the College with distinction.

Acting Principal
Last Friday, 25th August, 77 students from MacKillop College and St Joseph’s Regional College, attended the annual St Vincent
de Paul School Sleepout. The night reflected the poverty experienced by people of today focusing particularly on Homelessness.
Port Macquarie is home to those continually searching for help to get them off the streets.
Through the assistance and planning of the College staff, we put on an event that provided the students with the opportunity to
learn more about Homelessness, and how close to home it really is. There were a lot of fun and games bringing to mind a visual
thought of each aspect of Homelessness including: shelter, food, water, warmth, things we often take for granted without thinking.
From Fort building with cardboard boxes, to eating soup and bread to finishing with an amazing presentation from the local refuge
centre McCosker House. We hope the students who attended have been inspired and motivated to do something in their community
and in their schools.
Nights like this don’t just happen as you are well aware, and we would like to thank everyone who came, a special thanks to the
parents who supported their child’s involvement. A big thank you to Growers Market, Bels Bakery, Kenny Littles, and to the staff
and students who provided us with plenty of bread, soup and fruit. On behalf of the leaders, I think it’s safe to say how much fun
we had with all these amazing students, it was a blast and we look forward to seeing all of you getting involved.
Hope to see you all there next year with a +1, more the merrier I say.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN
All students are encouraged to collect the stickers, bring them in and place in box provided in student entry of
College Office. Your support would be appreciated.
SUBJECT & ELECTIVE STATEMENT – REMINDERS
Reminder statements were mailed last week. Thank you to those families who have regular payments well established. Year 9
& 8 Camp payments should be finalised well before departure. Payments should be maintained (and if necessary increased) to
ensure a nil balance at the beginning of December. Please contact the College office if you have any queries relating to amounts
on your statement.
YEAR 12 GRADUATION BOOKINGS/SEATING
Students have been eagerly organising their tables for their Graduation Dinner scheduled for Saturday, 18th November. Bookings
are taken each Monday and Tuesday at lunchtime only. The cost of $210 – (this includes one student ticket, two parent tickets, a
Year Book and access to Photo disc of evening), has been billed to Subject & Elective Statements earlier this Term. Bookings
cannot be secured until payment is received for the Graduation. Any additional amounts relating to the Year 12 students also
needs to be cleared. Additional tickets ($55) must be paid at the time of booking.
NAPLAN - TEST THE TEST
Students received a letter last week to inform parents and carers of the NAPLAN testing trial that will
begin on Tuesday. A reminder to all that while students are encouraged to undertake these tests to the best
of their ability, the main reasoning for these tests is to trial the viability and success of taking these tests
online in the future.
Students are reminded of the need to have a fully charged device, headphones and the NAPLAN "App" on their devices each day
during the trial.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Pastoral Co-ordinator’s Award:
Alexander Goldie, Jamie Laing, Joshua Petrie, Isobel Pares and Dane Young.
Ellen McKell
Year 7 Leader of Pastoral Care
Year 8 have been very busy with assessment preparation in English and Geography with these tasks due in Week 8. On Tuesday
of Week 9 students need to bring in their tents they are using for Year 8 Camp to do a practise setup prior to camp itself.
I actively encourage students to be mindful and careful of their iPads as in recent weeks we have had a
couple of damaged iPads because of silliness, mischief and not enough care being taken. As we all know
these are expensive items and impact on families and education when being replaced and/or out of action.
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Silver Principal’s Award: Sophie Evans,
Bethany Hosking, Cameron Martin and Hugh Robertson.
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Pastoral Co-ordinator’s Award: James

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the Year 11 boys who were members of the MacKillop Boys Soccer team who
were recognised at assembly this week for finishing 3rd in the State at the NSW Football
Championships. Most importantly the boys were praised by their coach Mr Pugh as being
outstanding representatives of their College and of themselves.
Congratulations to Molly Dezius who was recently named as a finalist in a National design competition called “Wool4School”
This is an annual school student design competition to give budding fashion designers an opportunity to express their talent and
passion for design. The competition run by The Woolmark Company is open to students all across the country from Years 7-12,
originating in 2012, involving over 40,000 students. This year’s theme invited students to design an outfit for their favourite
musician to wear on stage. The outfit had to be made using a minimum of 80% Merino wool, must have contained a minimum of
one garment and a maximum of 4 pieces along with an accessory constructed from wool. Requirements of the competition vary
for each age group but Year 11 and 12 contestants were expected to deliver an annotated illustration of their design, a mood board
(inspiration), a creative statement explaining their design and technical sketches of the garments. To meet the criteria, designs had
to be innovative and creative, reference the theme, have a cohesive look, reference the qualities of Merino wool and demonstrate
the properties of Merino wool and express the meaning behind the Woolmark logo.
“I chose to design an outfit for British band member Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine. Her eccentric, free-spirited
persona inspired the alternant theme of my design along with referencing the beauty and wonder of the natural world, a common
concept explored in the artists’ music.” Molly Dezius Year 11.

ATTITUDE, WORK ETHIC AND ATTENDANCE IN THE LEAD UP TO HSC EXAMS
Further to my item last week, our Assistant Principal spoke at length during our most recent Year Meeting regarding the
importance of this. Although the HSC subject assessment ranks have now been determined, the actual assessment mark
achieved is moderated by the HSC exam mark – this means that if the students do well in the actual HSC exam, then all
assessment marks will be boosted.
HSC MARKING OF MAJOR WORKS
Best wishes and congratulations to those students who have either had their major works recently marked
(Ashlee Mangold and Majella Starr in Dance) or are due to be marked. The following subject areas and dates
are related to their individual major works, ITT-Timber (Thursday, 31st August), Drama (Friday, 1st
September), Music (Tuesday, 12th September) and D & T (Wednesday, 13th September). Hopefully their
dedication and efforts will be suitably rewarded. Their achievements would not have been possible without
the mentoring of their subject teachers and support from home.
CLOSING DATES – BE ON TIME!
The following Early Entry schemes will close within the next few weeks. Southern Cross
University’s STAR program will close to student applications on Friday, 8th September, these
offers cannot be deferred. University of New England’s Early Entry program will close to
student applications on Friday, 29th September, as does the Schools Recommendation
Scheme through UAC. Once an Early Entry application has been submitted it cannot be
changed or altered in any way. University of Sydney E12 program for the financially
disadvantaged closes 5.00p.m. Friday, 1st September (today).

SENIOR GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS EXCEL IN AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHY COMPETITION
66 Year 10, 11 and 12 Geography students tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students
from all around Australia in the 2017 Australian Geography Competition.
We had a significant number of student geographers at our school perform to a very high level in the
competition this year. Lachlan Myers of Year 12 gained a mark that placed him in the Top 1% of all
competitors. This is an outstanding result and displays Lachlan’s geographical versatility and exceptional
skill. Overall 10 students achieved high distinctions, 7 distinctions and 12 credits.
Over 70 000 students from 743 schools across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition so the results give us an
external benchmark as to how are students are going in certain aspects of geography.
Bernard Fitzpatrick, the competition’s national coordinator, said; “The competition played a role in promoting geography to
students and the wider school community.”
“Geography is an important subject which develops a student’s understanding of the spatial and temporal relationships of people
and place. It helps students appreciate the complex nature of local, regional and global social, economic and environmental
interactions”, said Mr Fitzpatrick.
Congratulations all of the students who participated in the competition and they are commended on their outstanding results. The
award recipients are as follows:
Year 12
Top 1% - Lachlan Myers.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT
Australia celebrates National Health Day next week and I thought it would be a great opportunity at assembly this week to highlight
the many different sports that our students have been involved with over the past six weeks and what is coming up in the world
of sport at MacKillop College.
Playing a sport requires dedication, sacrifice and commitment and it is not always about winning. Sport provides great benefits
to our social, emotional and mental wellbeing whilst providing the obvious physical benefits. Our sporting pursuits of late...
Ella Heeney represented NSW All Schools at the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in Hobart. Ella
capped off an amazing couple of months finishing 7th in Australia which means Ella is now the first reserve for the Australian
Team to tour France in 2018. An outstanding achievement.
Petrea Spencer represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Touch Football Championships.
Diocesan Basketball saw our 9/10 Boys win the competition in a nail biting final. Both our 9/10 Boys and Girls’ teams now
travel to Sydney next term to contest the NSWCCC Junior State Basketball Championships.
Netball where our 9/10 netballers have been preparing for the NSW Schools Cup State Final they will contest in the last
week of Term. Our junior, intermediate and senior teams travelled to Casino this week to contest the Diocesan Netball
Championships.
Special mention to our students who competed at Diocesan Athletics recently. Overall MacKillop finished in second place
on 928 points with our closest rival on 686 points.

Champions: Tahj Thrower, Dylan De Domizio, Kyle De Domizio and Keely Sinclair.
Diocesan Runners Up: Isabella Ryan and Annika Toohey.
Football or affectionately known as Soccer – we were all lucky enough to witness a thrilling game of soccer when our boys
played on home soil against Parramatta Marist Brothers in the quarter final of the NSWCCC Knockout competition. This
meant the boys went on to play in the State semi-final this week in Sydney against Maitland. The boys took a handy lead in
the first half but unfortunately the game finished with the score line 2-1 in Maitland’s favour. The boys were in the game right
to the end and gave it their all – they should be extremely proud of their efforts as being crowned the third best soccer team in
NSW for their division which is no easy feat and a fantastic achievement. Thank you to Super Coach - Mr Pugh for coaching
our boys over the past two terms and to Mr Irving for driving the bus.

COMMUNITY SPORT
Congratulations to Tom Connolly and Jared Humphreys who recently represented the North Coast Under 15's cricket team
against the NSW Lend Lease Breakers at Leisure Park, Coffs Harbour. This was a great opportunity for the boys to play against
some of the best Australian female cricketers including Alyssa Healey and Alex Blackwell.
Tom scored 35 and Jared scored 50. They won on Saturday and lost on Sunday. Jared snared the wicket of Alex Blackwell.
"We both thought it was a great experience playing against professionals and learning from the way they play and approach the
game, it was good fun and cool to play against Alyssa Healy and the other girls” (Tom Connolly)
If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email
myself or your child’s respective Leader of Pastoral Care so we can acknowledge these achievements.
If you have any questions regarding sport at MacKillop College, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone at
