YEAR 11 RETREATS

All Year 11 students will participate in retreats at Forster (Camp Elim), Coffs Harbour or Bonny Hills (Francis Retreat Centre)

next week. I am confident that our current Year 11 students will find these very rewarding and a memorable part of their final

year at the College.

A few important points in relation to these retreats:

they are an integral part of our pastoral and spiritual formation for senior students;

it is critically important to take time out to stop, reflect and focus on the quality of relationships with friends, family and

God;

our philosophy of a well-rounded, holistic education means we need to take time to focus on the broader developmental

needs of the young adults entrusted to our care;

graduating students place a high value on this retreat experience and, year after year, rate it among the great highlights of

their senior school experience;

the school and Diocese invests heavily in retreats by training teachers to be able to run these experiences;

teachers, most with families of their own, give generously of their time year after year to take students away and give

them a great retreat experience; and

retreats complement our broader spiritual formation program which includes formal HSC courses in Studies of Religion,

daily prayer, liturgies, Eucharistic celebration, Christian community service, reflection days and a focus on living out

Christ’s challenge to “love others as I have loved you”.

I sincerely thank the staff who give up their time in support of this integral part of our holistic education at MacKillop College.

Mrs Andrea Huxley, our Leader of Pastoral Care for Year 11, started planning quite some time ago to ensure the success of these

retreats and Ms Joan Lancaster our Leader of Evangelisation, has spent many hours ensuring that the quality of workshops and

activities will be our usual high standard.

Staff give up the comforts of their own home and leave their other family responsibilities to provide this wonderful opportunity

for our students, and I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank:

Mrs Nicole Bailey, Mr Patrick Byrnes, Ms Pauline Cain, Mrs Cath Eichmann, Mr Andrew Evans, Mrs Marg Gobius, Miss Ellen

Hales (Parish Youth Co-ordinator), Mrs Kelly Higham, Mrs Andrea Huxley, Mr Adam Kelly, Mr Michael Kelly, Ms Joan

Lancaster, Miss Christa Morrow (YMO), Ms Georgina Pender, Mrs Francesca Serafino, Mr Stewart Smith, Mr Daniel Underhill

(YMO), Mrs Jenny Watson, Mr Alan Wheatland.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Lord we come before You, desiring to give thanks.

We have so much to be thankful for, things unseen and seen, that you have done in our lives.

We give thanks for opportunities offered at MacKillop College both inside and outside of the classroom.

We especially give thanks to those teachers who organise and prepare wonderful opportunities for all students.

We thank our parents for all they do to ensure we are cared for and loved.

Lord, help us to continue to endeavour to be thankful for everything

We ask this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord

Amen

“May the Spirit of the Lord be with you”

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg spoke to St Agnes’ Parish parents on Monday night in a presentation

titled, Real Wired Child: What kids are doing online and how to keep them safe. Dr Carr-

Gregg is one of Australia’s highest profile child and adolescent psychologists and it was a

great coup that our Information Technology leaders were able to secure him to speak as part

of our schools’ Digital Wellbeing Week.

As many parents were unable to attend the presentation I will offer some of his observations,

insights and advice through the newsletter this term.

Real Wired Child: What kids are doing online and how to keep them safe.

The world our adolescents and teenagers are living in is unlike anything we have known before. It is new ground for

everyone and a tricky time to be a parent.

The real world for adolescents and teens is both offline and online.

Online is how adolescents and teens communicate – they know nothing other than a world with technology.

Technology, however, is not all bad.

The essential thing parents must do is teach their children to use the internet and social media in a safe, respectful and

responsible way. It is as important as teaching children how to cross the road or having them learn to swim.

Next week: Apps and websites Dr Michael Carr-Gregg recommends for parents and young people.

As part of Digital Wellbeing Week all students attended presentations by leading experts in the cyber-wellbeing field including

Project Rockit and Safe on Social. Parents are welcome to visit the websites of these organisations, and I also encourage you to

ask your children about what they heard and what they learned from the presentations.

MASS OF THE ANGELS Our annual parish Mass of the Angels will be held on Wednesday, 25th October at

the 5.15p.m. Mass. This Mass provides an opportunity for grandparents, parents, individuals and

families to remember the ones in their lives who are no longer with them.

All are invited to come together to pray for one another and for all who grieve the loss of a child.

Mass will be followed by a light supper. If you have any questions please contact the Presbytery

office on 65831024.

MASS

To our Year 7 families and friends, thank you again for helping to celebrate our Year 7 Mass this week.

It is always appreciated by your children - and their teachers - when you are able to attend our important

occasions. It is also more special to be able to share our successes with you! Thank you for joining us.

SCHOOL TV

Another reminder to families regarding our Wellbeing resource, School TV. This is a great resource with

new titles every month that are available for all our parents via the College website (under the Parent

Information tab). This month there is great information that may be helpful for you to better support your

children during assessment periods entitled, Exam Jitters.

The first two weeks of Term 4 have certainly flown by. I'd like to thank the students for their positive interaction and response as

I have filled in as their Pastoral Co-ordinator. We welcome back Mr Ashe next week.

CYBER SAFETY AND AWARENESS Following on from Monday's Cyberwell presentation by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg to parents, Year 8 attended

a presentation called Project Rockit. Lots of valuable information was shared with students on topics that

definitely impact the lives of our students and families. It is a timely opportunity for a family discussion and

review of the safe use of technology.

A website that would be very useful for parents to peruse is: https://www.esafety.gov.au/iparent

WRITERS CAMP

Congratulations to all students who attended the Writers Camp at the Francis Centre, Bonny Hills last week. It

was a very worthwhile and fruitful event from the feedback I received from our students. A huge thank you to

Miss Nikki Gray for her enthusiasm and support of these students. Please read a more detailed report within this

newsletter.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

As the year draws to an end it will soon be time for staff to write reports. Pastoral Care teachers will write a comment which

reflects each student’s individual standards, contributions and achievements during the year. This comment takes on even more

significance as most of our students will begin the search for part-time employment over summer and in the new year.

UPCOMING YEAR 8 MASS Save the date, Friday, 4th November in your forward planner, as this is when we will be having our Year 8

Mass from 9.00a.m.-10.30 a.m. at St Agnes’ Parish Church.

On Monday, well known clinical psychologist, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, addressed parents and staff about tips for parenting our

youth in their online behaviours.

We were all reminded of the real presence of the cyber world as a vehicle for our youth’s interest and sense of social connectedness:

there are more devices than people in the world; the average person checks their phone every 15 minutes; 95% of 15 year olds

own a smartphone and their real world is both off and online – it is how today’s youth communicate.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg emphasised the importance of coaching our sons and daughters so they can use social media well.

The tips below are worthwhile strategies:

Use the application Cold Turkey or Self Control which blocks off the

internet and messages for scheduled periods of time, allowing students

homework time and study periods free from pop-ups and messages that

can easily distract from work;

iParent website https://www.esafety.gov.au/iparent is the best, up-to-

date site available to parents informing them how to meet the challenges

of our students online;

When, rather than if, cyberbullying happens it is good practice to: NOT

reply, block the person, save the evidence, report the abuse;

Adhere to social networking age recommendations;

Set boundaries and limits about excessive social networking; if these

limits are broken – set consequences;

Never post anything online you wouldn’t want your parents

(grandparents), police, principal or a predator to see; and

If online behaviour has a negative impact on day to day lives – ACT.

Today Year 9 attended a Cyberwell conference in which they were alerted to

how accessible and telling their online profile is for anyone to check – and

how to safeguard their privacy more online.

I was reminded as a teacher and a parent myself about the importance of

having ongoing conversations about the nature of our young people’s

relationship with others online, just as we have ongoing conversations about

relationships off line, and encourage parents to use this newsletter as a trigger to start.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations Ruby Taylor who played National Touch Rugby for Australia against New Zealand in

Tweed Heads in the mixed U21 team – an admirable level of skill.

GOOD LUCK

Good luck to the candidates on the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze challenge today and tomorrow.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Ella-Jayne Wehlow who was selected to be a part of the Team Australia training squad for

the 2018 Junior Roller Derby World Cup. This is an amazing achievement and requires many hours of training

and a lot of travel as she prepares for the competition.

CYBERWELL SEMINAR

Year 11 attended a Cyberwell seminar at Newman Senior Technical College this week

with the Year 11 students from St Joseph’s Regional and Newman. The seminar was

relevant to Year 11 and very eye opening for me; it was based around educating the

students as to what they actually sign up for when using social media. It highlighted

their responsibilities and emphasised some of the severe legal consequences that they

will encounter if they were to misuse social media. Unfortunately, many young people

make these mistakes unknowingly but the consequences remain severe. I would like to

share just a few of the important notes I took from the seminar.

If you have notifications switched on in your smart phone, then many apps can access your location and the places you

frequent, and then use this information to influence your media feed for marketing and sales purposes;

Some apps have the capabilities to turn the camera in your phone around and record your reactions when you read posts

or see images;

74% of students use the app called snapchat, because it’s the one app their parents don’t use!

When using snapchat, if you do not have your ‘snap map’ turned to ‘ghost mode’, then any person using snapchat can see

your location and identity exactly where you are at any given time. Many young people see this as a great social tool but

as parents can you imagine the possibilities of who else could be looking at the current location of your child and where

they sleep at night?

I hate to use scare tactics but I strongly advise you to have a conversation with your children about their use of social media, ask

them to teach you about snapchat and please ensure they have it turned to ghost mode.

In the meantime and on a positive note we are very excited to take a few days next week to spend together and have a meaningful

experience at Retreat.

HSC EXAMS

Some reminders regarding the HSC exams which commenced on Monday, 16th October.

Students are expected to be in full school or sports uniform for the examinations.

Know the day and time each exam starts.

Arrive at school at least 15-20 minutes prior to the exam commencing.

You must have ID (which includes your NESA number) and place it on the front of your desk.

You should write in black pen, make sure you have spare pens.

You may also take in a ruler, highlighters, pencils (2B), sharpener, eraser and a clear bottle of water.

You can wear a watch, but once you sit down you will have to take it off and place it in clear view on your desk.

Some exams require specific equipment – make sure you know what is needed for each exam you are sitting.

Make sure any equipment you are allowed to bring, such as a calculator, is in good working order. You are not allowed

to borrow equipment during examinations.

You CANNOT bring the following into the examination room: mobile phone, smart watch, ipads, electronic devices,

paper or correction fluid.

ILLNESS or MISADVENTURE

You should attend every examination if possible. If you cannot attend an examination because of

illness or misadventure, you must notify either Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Eichmann, Mr Adam Kelly or

Mr McQueen immediately at the College.

EVIDENCE: Should an illness or misadventure occur you need to seek independent evidence on

that day. The documentation you provide must be current and specific to the date and time of the

examination. A medical certificate that merely states you were unfit for school is unacceptable.

If you are suffering from illness or misadventure, but are still able to attend the examination, notify the Presiding Officer

(the person supervising the exam) at once. Do this at exams in which you consider your performance may be affected.

You will need to complete a form from the Presiding Officer.

YEAR 8 WRITERS’ ENRICHMENT CAMP

The Year 8 Writers Enrichment Camp offers the chance for 15 students each from MacKillop,

St Paul's Kempsey and St Joseph's Regional to come together for two days to explore and

develop their creative writing talents. The workshops, run by English teachers from the three

schools, focus on helping students to acquire strategies to arrive at an original idea from which

a more extensive piece could be developed, and to find inspiration through exploring settings

and senses. The students who attended last Thursday and Friday displayed exemplary

enthusiasm and creativity; we can’t wait to see their final pieces of work!

Nikki Gray & Brent Lowrey

In the words of two of the writers....

Word on the street from the English Writers’ Camp is that students gathered together to

participate in multiple activities to build creativity and a sense of pursuing their creative writing

abilities. Whether it was getting to their characters, planning a story or finding inspiration,

students got stuck into it with a smile on their faces. All students returned to school with grins

and full of stories to tell. Casey Biddle and Saoirse Barltrop

SENIOR STUDY CENTRE NEWS

A new Moodle page, called the ‘Senior Study Moodle Page’ has been launched for senior students at MacKillop College and their

parents. (Parents, you will need your child to log-in to the MacKillop Moodle Page in order to view the Senior Study Moodle

Page). Year 10 students and their parents may also find this Moodle page informative as they approach their senior studies.

This Moodle page has been made specifically for students studying their HSC as well as students studying their preliminary HSC.

Students will find everything that they need regarding their senior studies in the one place.

On this Moodle page, students and parents will find valuable resources including subject syllabuses, past HSC papers, referencing

guides, advice on how to write essays, time management, organisational skills, study timetables, study techniques, stress

management strategies, as well as strategies to help students find their preferred learning style.

Students and parents will also find links to valuable websites. Some of these websites include: NSW Education Standards

Authority (NESA), University Admissions Centre, MacKillop College Careers, TAFE NSW, Training Services NSW and the

Online Multiple Choice program developed by NESA.

I encourage all senior students and their parents to have a look at this Moodle page.

To get to the Moodle page:
