May 2011 Odyssey Middle School A Voyage To Excellence

Odyssey

Dear Odyssey Parents, Students, and Community,

What a wonderful school year it has been, and it’s hard to believe that the school year is nearly ended. I am very proud of our students’ and teachers’ hard work in preparation for all the changes on FCAT. They have also worked very diligently to make sure everyone is prepared for their End of Course exams. Additionally, hundreds of students have exhibited their focus on academics by maintaining their Honor Roll and/or Principal’s Honor Roll status all year. Our students truly exemplify that Odyssey is a great place to learn!

It has been a pleasure to recognize students for their many achievements. Monthly, we have recognized one male and one female student from each team for character, leadership, service, and scholarship with our Student of the Month program. Throughout the year we have recognized students for their contributions to the school and

community with programs like the Martin Luther King Humanitarian, Disney’s Dreamer and Doer, and Spirit of Excellence. Students have prepared, competed, and represented Odyssey with distinction in Odyssey of the Mind, Battle of the Books, and Woodman’s Oration contest. Our students have also received distinguished

recognition for their contributions in music, art, and athletics. Parents, thank you for your support of our students. We should be very proud of the way that they represent themselves, their families, and our

school.

I realize that students are excited about the end of the school year, but it is very important for students to remain focused on their academics up to the very last day of school. This is a critical time in the school year for all students, whether a student has all A’s and B’s and wants to maintain Honor Roll status for final grades or a student is in danger of failing a class. We want all students to finish the school year on a strong note, and we want their permanent record to reflect the highest grades and test scores possible. Please encourage your student to complete homework and required reading nightly. Continue to check the planner and progress book

regularly. Although it may seem that your middle school student may not need your academic guidance at home, he or she very much needs the support, encouragement, and even the

occasional prodding of the first teacher in life, Mom or Dad. Together, we can help our students achieve academic success.

...continued from page 1Continuing this year, students have required summer reading and summer assignments for their core academic classes. The purpose of summer work is to help students maintain and strengthen their skills in reading, writing, and problem-solving. Research shows that academic regression occurs after several weeks away from the classroom, and we want to avoid any regression among our Odyssey students. Summer assignments will be distributed prior to the end of the school year, and these assignments will also be accessible on our school website (www.odms.ocps.net) over the summer break. Please encourage your student to complete these assignments with fidelity in order to be sharp and ready for the 2011-2012 school year in August. As summer break approaches, please note that Odyssey Middle School, along with other OCPS schools, will be closed the week of July 4th. Additionally, all schools and district offices will be on a modified schedule from June 24-August 5. Odyssey Middle School’s hours during this time period will be 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Schools and district offices will be closed on Fridays. As we prepare to close out this school year, please let me express my sincere appreciation of your continued support of our students, staff and school programs. We cannot have successful students, successful programs, and a successful school without our parents, community members, faculty, and staff. Thank you for all you do.

Yours in Education,Patricia Bowen-PainterPrincipal

Although we are rapidly approaching the end of the 2010-2011 school year, the Endeavor Team is still going strong. We have all been relentless in our efforts to prepare our students for high school, and will continue to do so until the very last day. Please help us by reminding our students that now is a good time to practice for high school by being prepared every day and taking all assignments seriously. In science, Mrs. Forman’s students are studying weather and climate. By the end of the year, your students should be able to tell you why we have thunderstorms here in Florida in the summer, how hurricanes are formed, and all about fronts. In Mr. Cueto’s room, regular math students are focusing on analyzing and organizing different types of data in data sets and different types of data displays such as circle graphs, histograms, and box and whisker plots. Pre-Algebra will be focusing on polynomials and learning how to add and subtract them. The will also be learning how to multiply polynomials by monomials and other polynomials. Students in Ms. Honeycutt’s U.S. history classes have been busy covering the topics of early presidents, westward expansion, industrialization, and reform movements this spring. To finish out the year, students are learning about the Civil War in our most exciting unit which will culminate with a debate between the Blue and Gray teams. Additionally, we have been working on our presentation and public speaking skills by doing research projects and peer teaching assignments. In Ms. Vazquez’s language arts classes, students are starting up their Holocaust unit and Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night. Students have great interest in this tragic time period and are using what they have researched to create PowerPoint Presentations, posters, and essays to express their views and perception of this violent period. They are also learning to evaluate and document their sources. While reading, our students will continue to focus on building vocabulary and increasing comprehension skills through classroom discussions, oral presentations, and a variety of genres including poetry. The Endeavor Team teachers would like to wish all our students and their families much success and happiness in the future. It has been our privilege to work with you this year! Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us via email at: Ms. Honeycutt/U.S. History: [email protected]. Cueto/Math: [email protected]. The STARS Team had a very successful year! The team started a “Zero Zero’s” Club to reward those students with no missing assignments in selected classes and watched how the blue “missing assignment” squares in our grade book disappeared. We have enjoyed our students this year and want to thank all of our parents for their support and encouragement! In Ms. D’Angelo’s science class, we covered all the formulas on the reference sheet for the 8th grade FCAT science test next year-speed, acceleration, momentum, frequency, and wavelength. We are concluding our Forces, Motion, and Energy unit with the construction of roller coasters where students will observe and solve equations using kinetic and potential energy. Our final units will be on Atomic Structure and Chemistry. We are continuing to use our Internet review site, Study Island, to review concepts learned in our physics and chemistry units. Please note that there will be a summer research project for science-details which will be handed out to students and also will be accessible on the ODMS website this summer. It was a privilege to teach all of your wonderful sons and daughters this year and I look forward to having them visit the STARS hallway next year to see how much they have grown! Wow--what a wonderful year this has been thus far! While the year-end is rapidly approaching, we still have much to accomplish before departing for the summer break; consequently, students need to maintain their focus, and consistency, more than ever before. Fourth quarter, we are studying Canada and the United States. As our last project for the year, students are currently researching one of the fifty states of the USA and preparing individual state guidebooks. They will learn how to cite their sources, as well. Please encourage your child to share with you what they have learned from this opportunity, and don’t be surprised if your child has become an expert on that particular state. Next week, we have a unit test, which will also help prepare students for the year-end final scheduled on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Thank you, parents, for your parental involvement and support—we truly have a terrific group of boys and girls making up the STARS team this year. Wishing you each a safe and fun filled summer! Ms. Calabrese, 7th grade social studies, STARS Team. Now that FCAT is behind us and the school year’s end is approaching, Mr. Shanafelt and his students will continue to work on probability. Through the lessons on probability, we will explore

the ideas of experimental probability, sample spaces, theoretical probability, making predictions, and probability of independent and dependent events. Students will then have the opportunity to expand their knowledge on solving equations by working with multi-step equations and applying these ideas to solving inequalities and multi-step inequalities. Mr. Shanafelt’s advanced math students will begin preparing for eighth grade. We are going to begin working with Operations With Square Roots, The Pythagorean Theorem, Angles, and an Introduction to Higher Level Geometry. All students should be on the lookout for their summer math assignment. As the STARS team finishes out the year in Language Arts, we have enjoyed reading the novel, Tangerine, by Edward Bloor. Ask your student which part of the novel they enjoyed the most, and how they felt as we read the climax of the book, when “Paul” figured out how his eyesight was damaged! We have kept track of the plot of the novel in our Tangerine Journals. Your student may share it with you too! We continue to hone our writing skills, composing various types of poetry, and adding our original poems to a personal Poetry Booklet. Your student will be able to bring this in-class project home to share with you as the school year comes to a close. Please keep in mind that your student will have an End-of-Course exam on June 2, 2011. This will be a skill-based test, using their ability to analyze reading passages using various benchmarks we have focused on throughout the year. Therefore, please continue to monitor their daily Reading Logs. If you can ask them some general knowledge questions about what they have read (Plot, Theme, Tone, Main Idea, etc.), their comprehension will continue to soar! I have enjoyed teaching your children this year, and wish them continued success as they enter 8th grade in August. I have seen them mature a great deal over the course of the year, and I congratulate you and them, as they represent themselves to be young ladies and gentlemen of the future, using their talents and abilities as they progress along their academic journeys. We hope everyone has a fun and safe summer…see you next year!

In science, we are studying Newton’s laws of motion and applying this new knowledge in the design and construction of a roller coaster. We will soon start our unit in chemistry. It is important that the students remain focused in their school work. They must review every day and practice the formulas given in class. It is my expectation that students will take initiative by expressing any doubts and by asking questions for clarification. Although FCAT is behind us for the 2010-2011 school year, students haven’t skipped a beat in language arts class. With April being National Poetry Month, students participated in a poetry project in Ms. Martin’s class. A few students had poems that were selected to compete in the school-wide poetry contest here at Odyssey! In addition to the poetry project, students have delved into analyzing new literary genres such as legends and folklore. Students are learning that although mythology is fiction, the Greeks believed these myths to be true for hundreds of years! This fact is why Greek mythology is so extensive and complex. Ms. Martin’s classes also studied the history of the medieval era, the Chivalric Code and the Arthurian Legends. Students learned how to identify elements that set legends apart from other genres of fictional literature. Students and parents: stay tuned for summer reading assignments. With the math FCAT in our rearview window, we officially begin the eighth grade school year. As opposed to scaling down the curriculum as the school year comes to a close, we are rigorously pursuing our math studies to have the students ready for this coming August and the new school year. We have just completed a unit on “Probability”, and will be pursuing a variety of topics that I hope the students will find interesting. Please encourage your students to work their hardest all the way to the end of the school year. After all, you know what they say about “idle hands.” All students will also have a summer assignment to complete and turn into their math teacher at the very beginning of next school year. In geography, we do not have far to look to study our next section as the last nine-weeks of the school year will be filled with information related to Canada, the United States of America, and my favorite state - Florida. First, we will discuss the Canadian geographic regions including economic activities, resources, climate, and major cities of the region. Second, we will create maps, which will identify the states of the United States, the four geographic regions, climate zones, cities, and important landmarks. Lastly, we will end the year by understanding the history of Florida and its people by studying and locating its physical features, major cities, and historical landmarks.

Voyagers Team

Team News You Can Use...Dear Parents, Wow! Another year is coming to a close. The Voyagers Team would like to thank you for being our partners in education. As we are wrapping the 2010-2011 school year, we would like to update you on what your child will be accomplishing during the fourth nine-weeks. In geography our 7th graders are getting ready to begin their end-of-year map project. They will be creating a map grid of North America on which they will draw, by free hand, a map of North America. It is so exciting to see the student’s progress from a blank sheet of paper to the end result of a Political/Physical map of North America that is full of color and creativity. In history our 8th graders are gearing up for our unit on the Civil War. The students will be spending the last few weeks of school creating and presenting group assignments, then reviewing for their Final Exam. In language arts, we have been exploring historical literature, both fiction and nonfiction. Our 7th graders are enjoying their historical fiction novel Out of Dust by Karen Hesse. During our reading, we have explored many literary devices: metaphors, similes, symbolism, and personification. Our 8th graders began these last nine-weeks with a Holocaust unit. We are currently reading and discussing Elie Wiesel’s Night. During our reading, we have explored author’s purpose for writing along with understanding cause and effect relationships. This piece of literature is both challenging and engaging. Through our current historical readings, all Voyager students continue to make many social studies connections to enrich their knowledge of history. Furthermore, our Voyager students have recently explored poetry form and creation. They have learned how to effectively express their personal feelings through various poetic styles. All Voyager students will continue to develop rich vocabulary and writing techniques via our daily “Terrific Ten,” literature reading, and “Writing Wednesday” activities throughout our final nine-weeks.

In mathematics, the 7th grade Voyagers are finishing up the year with percent of change, sales tax, simple interest, probability, and The Pythagorean Theorem. The 8th grade geometry students are getting ready for Algebra II by finishing up the year with geometric equations. All students should be completing their bell work, notes, and class work daily as well as reviewing at home to ensure their best performance on quizzes and tests. During the fourth nine-weeks in science, our 7th graders will be completing topics on conservation of energy, light, changes in matter, the atomic structure, Periodic Table, nuclear energy, and changes in matter. Our 8th graders will be introduced to topics relating to energy resources, weather, and climate. Parents, please make sure that your child is studying for the end of semester subject area exams which will cover materials from the 3rd and 4th nine-weeks. Once again, thank you for being a part of your child’s education. If you need to contact us, the following information will be useful. The school phone number is 407.207.3850

The Navigators Team teachers are so proud of our students for all their efforts put forth during FCAT week. The Navigator students worked hard throughout the year and really stepped up to the plate when it was crucial. We would like to also thank our team’s families for your support during that week and all year long. We are gearing up for the end of the year. Please look for information regarding end of the year exams. There will be study guides and review sheets going home and we are stressing to our students that every day counts. Learning happens in every class, every day. Ms. Martinez’s language arts classes are wrapping up their unit on homelessness as presented in the novel currently being read in class, Monkey Island. Students have taken a great interest in this topic, and have used what they learned to create visual representations, write reflections, increase vocabulary, and compose original poems to express a point of view. These classes will soon be moving into a whole unit on poetry, which will give students the opportunity to study and produce several types of poems. Mrs. Mitchell’s world studies classes are wrapping up their unit on Ancient Greece. The students had an opportunity to create educational board games to teach their classmates about what they have learned about Ancient Greece. These classes will soon be moving into the unit on Ancient Rome, where they will learn about the Rise and fall of The Roman Empire. Mrs. Fleming’s general math classes are learning about algebra and equations. The advanced class is learning about ratios, proportions, and percents. All classes are learning how math relates to real life situations. We had a great time discussing future goals and had an opportunity to imagine our lives 20 years from now. A couple of things to keep on the radar over the upcoming weeks are final exams and Math benchmark exams. Please continue to encourage your child to focus on academics. Thanks for all your support and cooperation this year. In Mrs. Dy’s science class we are learning about classification of living things. Our focus is on how organisms get their names and how they are classified. We are also learning about evolution. In this chapter, we are learning about natural selection and how organisms have evolved over time to remain a species still today. We will end the nine weeks with human sexuality education required by Orange County. Please be on the lookout for an information flyer going home in a few weeks. We are also preparing for the end of the year exams. I want to thank you for a great year and wish all my students a great summer and a terrific 7th grade year.

Physical education has had three very successful marking periods, and we are looking forward to an awesome end to the year. The students are becoming more physically fit, and they continue to learn about a variety of sports and activities. As we close out the year we will be doing fitness testing and having notebook checks. We still want to make sure the students are participating and dressing out every day. As the weather gets warmer we want to make sure your students stay hydrated, so encourage them to drink water throughout the day.
