COURSES TAUGHT

Marquette/NU/ISU Interpersonal Communication Provided theoretical understanding and practical skills related to communication in a variety of personal relationships. Developed critical-analytic skills in the areas of self-disclosure, empathy, conflict management, clarity, and behavioral flexibility among others. Emphasized the interrelationship between communication behavior and relationship development.

Marquette/ISU Small Group Communication Increased understanding of theories of small group processes. Facilitated development of the communication skills which enhance effective group discussion. Focused on analysis of group process as a diagnostic tool for prescribing appropriate communication skills such as: openness, clarifying feedback, support, critical examination, among others. Included participation in a semester-long task group.

Marquette Gender and Communication Organized around the following questions: 1) How do we define "gender" and "communication?" 2) How does language convey images of women and men? 3) Are there usage differences between women's and men's communication? 4) Are differences influenced by context (i.e. interpersonal, organizational, etc.) 5) What theories explain our findings? Presented the current social science research in answering the above questions.

Marquette Family Communication (new class that I introduced) Outlined communication phenomena in the context of the family. Developed an understanding of the ways in which members of a family system interact verbally and nonverbally and thus exert mutual influence. Included theoretical and practical approaches for increased understanding of and enhanced satisfaction with family communication dynamics. Included participation in a semester-long role-play family.

Marquette/ISU Introduction to Speech Communication Introduced the principles of communication in interpersonal, small group, and public contexts. Presented theoretical explanations and practical skills for effective communication.

Marquette Seminar on Interpersonal Communication: Behaving Badly Analyzed messages that are considered “negative” or undesirable in interpersonal communication. Used a variety of theories to examine whether these messages are, in fact, negative and

discussed how they might produce benefits in interpersonal relationships.

Marquette Seminar on Language and the Family Analyzed the messages sent through language and the media about the status of the family in our culture. Utilized theoretical frameworks to examine the language we use to describe the family.

Marquette Introduction to Communication Theory (grad) Introduced the major theoretical approaches in communication research (especially those that operate within a social scientific perspective). Provided analytic tools for evaluating theory. Introduced our program at Marquette as well as the range of content, theory and method that is covered in the term "communication research."

Marquette Methods of Theory Construction (grad) Introduced the basic concepts and problems associated with theory construction in the behavioral sciences in general and in the field of communication in particular. Provided information about the metatheoretical positions most often taken in communication theory. Developed a theoretical position and provided critical skills for analyzing it.

Marquette Theory and Methods in the Study of Marital and Family Communication (grad) Organized around the following questions: 1) How are marital and family communication issues conceptually distinct from issues of interpersonal communication? 2) What are the major compelling issues currently being examined in family communication? 3) How do practitioners study communication in families and what are the strengths and weaknesses of these methods? and 4) What theories are useful to us in explaining family interaction?

Marquette Social Cognition, Communication, and Relational Development (grad) Reviewed and examined the literature focused on the intersection of cognition, communication, and relational development. Concentrated on theoretical foundations, methodological issues and practical applications of this research area. Provided critical and analytical tools for critiquing the extant literature. Resulted in a seminar paper that reported on the analysis of original data.

Marquette Theories of Persuasion (grad) Reviewed and examined literature In the social sciences and rhetorical studies concerned with theories of persuasion. Provided critical and analytical tools for critiquing and applying the theories. Conducted as a seminar with strong student participation.

Marquette Relational Dialectics in Communication (grad) Reviewed and examined literature concerned with dialectics as a theoretical

Framework for understanding relational development and maintenance. Supervised students as they conducted original research in the area.

Marquette Introduction to Communication Theory and Research Introduced students to the basic tenets of theoretical thinking. Examined how theory and research work together in the process of knowledge generation and testing. Explored several key theories advanced to explain communication behaviors.

ISU/MU Introduction to Public Speaking Designed to instruct students in the composition and delivery of various types of speeches including the speech to inform, persuade, entertain and speeches for specific occasions. Attention was given to preparation concerns such as research and organization as well as delivery concerns including visual aids, projection, articulation, vocal variety, among others.

NU (Kellogg) Communication Workshop (grad) Designed for the career-minded student. Focused on oral communication skills most useful in an organizational context. Emphasized interview skills, presentational skills, the preparation and use of audio-visual materials, group and team-building skills, among others.
