STAR-STUDDED REAL ESTATE: CELEBRITY HOMES IN THE HAMPTONSBY M.C. SUSSMAN

The Hamptons have long been a haven for actors and writers, the very rich and the uber-famous. Blockbuster master Steven Spielberg lives on sought after Georgica Pond, style maven Martha Stewart has an undoubtably tidy oceanfront spread and designer Calvin Klein has a new glass manse. Sir Paul McCartney, actress Renee Zellweger, broadcaster Katie Couric and Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons also own homes in East Hampton. Television personality Kelly Ripa has a place in North Sea. And “Today Show” host Matt Lauer, who owns a home in Sag Harbor, is building a 40-acre horse farm in Water Mill. Then there are the newcomers. According to Zillow.com, among the newest Hamptons homeowners is actress Scarlett Johansson, who recently purchased a $2.2 million custom-built shingle home on 1.4 acres among the Amagansett Dunes. Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez, her twins and boyfriend Casper Smart moved into a gambrel style shingle house with a large pool on three acres in Water Mill last summer. J Lo paid $10 million for the luxe estate, an 8-bedroom, 4.5-bath, 8,500 square foot spread on its own cul de sac, according to Zillow.com The actress and former model Brooke Shields purchased a $4 million six-bedroom six-full-and-two-half bath home with an inground pool on half an acre in a desirable walk-to town Southampton location last August. The 4500 square foot home was in pristine turnkey shape and has a pergola covered terrace for alfresco dining off the gourmet kitchen, a family room and a 20’ by 50’ freshwater pool with an automated cover. The lower level includes a family/media room, a playroom and walk-in cedar closet. A separate pool house with a covered porch boasts a great room with a

cathedral ceiling, a bedroom, bath, gourmet kitchenette, laundry room and there’s an outdoor shower. In Quiogue, Anderson Cooper recently put the six- bedroom home he owns next door to his own summer place on the market for just under three million, according to curbed.com. The 3,600 square foot home sits on 2.4 acres on Aspatuck Creek and comes with Cooper as next door neighbor. But star cachet does not guarantee a quick sale. Billy Joel has been trying to sell his oceanfront Sagaponack four-bedroom, six-bath shingle-style home, decorated by celeb designer Nate Berkus, since he and third wife, cookbook author Katie Lee

Joel, broke up five years ago. After pricing the house at $16.75 million in 2012, the Piano Man took it off the market, and then put it back on briefly last year at $23.5 million before dropping the price to $22.9 million. In the meantime, the fab singer-songwriter added new dune shuddery, installed air-conditioning on the second level and put in a swimming pool. Though a mere 5,550 square feet, the beach house has 145-feet of sandy beach, a chef ’s kitchen, a cathedral ceiling in the living room, terraces and a separate studio with a loft and two fireplaces. The designer Vince Camuto’s super luxurious seven- bedroom Southampton oceanfront estate is on the market for $48 million. The English Tudor style residence boasts 10,000 square feet and is set on 5.14 acres, with a pool, pool house, tennis court, formal gardens, a gazebo-green house and 472 feet of sandy beach. The grand and elegantly appointed home is more than eight decades old, with a pedigreed roster of former owners including the Woolworth family and a founding partner of Merrill Lynch. The elegant, recently renovated interiors include vaulted wood beams and French mantle fireplaces, modern amenities and state-of-the-art technology and security systems.

“Arbitrage” actor Richard Gere recently reduced the price on his six acre Strongheart Manor estate in North Haven/Sag Harbor from $65 million to $56 million, Zillow.com reports. The “Pretty Woman” star’s private spread has rolling lawns, lush flower gardens, an outdoor fireplace pavilion, a tranquil teahouse by a waterfront pond and more than 300 feet of bay front with breathtaking, panoramic water views. The renovated and expanded 12,000 square foot charming vintage main house was built in 1902, has 12-bedrooms and 12-baths and exudes serenity. There are also two additional guest houses on separate lots and Jimmy Buffett lives next door. SE

Gas guzzlers begone. Urban mobility is be-ing redefined and hybrid electric vehicles are raising the bar. Sustainable, emission free driving is in vogue and setting new standards for future mobility. To meet the demand for environmentally friendly high end automobiles, auto makers like Porsche, BMW and Mercedes have luxury hybrid and electric plug in cars. Among techies and others on the cutting edge, the all-elec-tric Tesla Model S is a status symbol. At $135,925, the new futuristic-looking 2015 electric BMW i8 is a turbocharged, high performance modern and sustainable sports coupe with wide opening scissor doors, hi-tech exterior lighting and a radiator ex-haust in the middle of the hood. It oozes sex appeal yet has the consumption and emis-sions footprint of a compact car. The attractive plug-in hybrid combines BMW eDrive technology and a BMW Twin-Power Turbo 1.5 litre, 3-cylinder gas engine, resulting in an A+ driving experience. With 360 horsepower and 420 pounds per foot of torque, it can zip from zero to 60 in 4.3 seconds. Its electric motor and combustion engines are perfectly synchronized and its aerodynamic design boosts its efficiency. The result is a topnotch driving ex-perience and with a BMW iWallbox wall-mounted home charging station a “full tank” every morning. It’s also getting easier to charge on the move at increasing numbers of public charging stations in ur-ban areas to top off the battery.

With a $99,000 base, the 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is a powerful green luxury machine that’s gotten a sexy make-over with tighter lines, more defined con-tours, newly shaped body elements in-cluding a new trunk lid, an automatically deploying spoiler and the option of having striking-looking full LED headlights. The new Panamera S E- Hybrid sports a 3.0 liter, 416 horsepower engine with twin turbochargers. The plug in vehicle reaches up to 84 mph in all-electric operation and can drive more than 20 miles on battery power before its gasoline-fed 6-cylinder engine kicks in. The battery can be fully charged within about two and a half hours when plugged in to a 240V power source. And a Porsche Car Connect mobile app will make it possible to check the Panamera’s

charge status or preheat or cool the car from a smart phone. According to Consumer Reports, with pricing starting at $70,000, the all electric plug-in Tesla Model S gets a solid “A,” a 99 out of 100 on their scorecard. Its only snag is that, with a driving range of 208 to 265 miles, its need to be recharged could be dicey on long-distance trips. Still, it can be plugged in to recharge anywhere. A full charge takes about six hours from a 240 volt outlet, stan-dard 120-volt wall outlets and public stations. The Model S tied for the quietest vehicle the magazine ever tested and earned high marks for energy efficiency, braking and ride quality. Hit the accelerator and in 5.4 sec-onds, the Model S is pushing 60 miles per hour, without a pause or a drop of gasoline. The Tesla’s power train is tucked between

its rear wheels and is three times more ener-gy efficient than a gas burning engine. And, unlike internal combustion engines with scores of moving parts that spark, pump, sputter and backfire, the Tesla motor’s only moving piece is the rotor. Even the climate control system is for-ward thinking. The Tesla can be preheated or cooled remotely by its mobile app. They call it “electric driving at the premium lev-el.” The new 2014 sporty Mercedes Benz B-Class Electric Drive has a “self-assured” and dynamic compact four-door design with seating for five and a prominent front grille. According to the Mercedes Benz website, mbusa.com, its advanced electric motor delivers 174 horsepower and 250 pounds per foot of torque for brisk acceleration and completely emission free, incredibly silent driving. The first luxury battery electric car from Mercedes-Benz, it has a range of more than 100 miles on a full charge. It can be easily charged at any standard outlet or from a heavy duty, 240 volt source. A full charge takes four hours while a 60-mile charge can take less than two. Using a smartphone and connective vehicle technology, the driv-er can check the current charge status of the lithium-ion battery or verify its current range on a map and find out where it can be recharged along the way. Will luxury hybrid and electric plug in cars foreshadow the fate of the horse drawn

carriage and the Model T? SE

t hese days it’s chic to incorporate the most cut-ting-edge technologies to run the manse home effi-ciently with deep-pocketed homeowners leading the way to greener homes.

From geothermal heating and cooling systems to high per-formance windows with triple panes of glass to tankless water heaters, solar panels and foam insulation, custom mansions are being outfitted with the best insulating technologies, al-ternative energy sources and eco-friendly features. As a result,

these top-of-the line homes are more durable and energy effi-cient as well as luxurious, not just because of lower utility and maintenance costs but because they can control their energy destiny and, for many, it’s the right thing to do. Marc Spector, an architect and owner of the Spector Group, said his design build firm, “always likes to propose geothermal to the client.” Despite upfront costs that are two to three times as expensive as a conventional heating and cooling system, geo-thermal pays off in about five years. The Spector group has successfully installed geothermal systems in homes from 5500 to 15,000 square feet in Old West-bury, Kings Point, the Hamptons and the South Shore, as well as in schools and office buildings.

While the outdoor temperature fluctuates with the chang-ing seasons, underground temperatures remain relatively constant year-round. Geothermal systems capitalize on those steady subterranean temperatures and use a buried system of pipes known as an earth loop and an indoor handling unit to provide “free energy” and savings “up to 70 percent on utility bills over using oil,” Marc explained. Going geothermal also eliminates issues with fumes or carbon monoxide associated with burning natural gas or other polluting fossil fuels. “There are so many secondary and tertiary benefits especial-ly when dealing with a really large home,” Marc added. Geothermal is well suited for use with radiant floors, heating swimming pools and hot water, and for powering heat pads that de-ice driveways, eliminating the need to shovel and salt. “If you have geothermal, you have unlimited capacity to tap into,” Marc said. “It is happening more, and more.” According to a Green Home Builders and Remodelers by McGraw-Hill Construction and the National Association of Home Builders, green homes are expected to comprise be-tween 29 and 38 percent of the market by 2016, up from 17 percent in 2011. Spending on eco-friendly home technologies such as energy efficient windows, solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling and foam insulation will zoom from $17 billion three years ago to $87 billion to $114 billion by 2016. Green home remodeling will show even greater gains. Smart home technology is also part of the efficiency equation, for convenience as well as energy savings. Re-motely controlled by iPhones and iPads, home automation systems can turn off the lights, turn up the pool tempera-ture, close the shades, text you if there’s a break- in and remotely run entertainment systems. Smartphones can check on what’s in the fridge while you’re at the supermarket, run a robot vacuum cleaner and remote-ly unlock doors. Home monitoring videos let you know what your puppy is up to while you’re at the office, and mobile alerts detect loud noise as well as motion. New refrigerators are smart-wired to dispense hot water and tell you when it’s time to buy milk. Even the toilet seat can be set to warm up 10 minutes before your wake-up alarm goes off. One of the simplest way to run your home more efficiently is by using certified Energy Star-rated appliances. These energy efficient products lower utility costs, makes your home more comfortable and helps stem climate change.

Another trick is to use motorized screens by phantom-screens.com that appear at the touch of a button and retract when not needed. Depending on the selected mesh type, the retractable screens -- which come in a variety of colors to match exterior or interior finishes -- also help reduce air conditioning costs. The screens come in a variety of colors to match exterior or interior finishes. Energy efficient light bulbs, dimmers, motion sensors and automatic daylight shut off sensors also help reduce a home’s carbon footprint. Compact fluorescent lightbulbs use far less energy than the old incandescent bulbs. In older homes, sealing air leaks and adding insulation im-proves energy efficiency and can make it feel more comfort-able. Install insulation in the attic and basement, put weather stripping on doors and caulk around windows to save more than 10 percent on annual heating and cooling costs. According to air conditioning manufacturer rheem.com, the best air conditioning systems use minimal electricity. While an air conditioner that’s too small won’t keep your home cool enough, a system that’s too large will turn on and off, cycling too often and wasting energy. Air conditioning equipment is rated for efficiency using a SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficien-cy Rating. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit. Rooftop solar panels that provide electrical power for a home are an even bigger energy saver. Eventually, the pan-els pay for themselves, generating excess electricity that a homeowner can sell back to the electric company. An easy first step is to solarize the hot water heater, which can re-duce hot water costs significantly. Solar pool heating systems raise water temperature 10 to 20 degrees and extend the swimming season without incur-ring additional energy costs. They use the pool’s existing pump and filter, circulating the pool water through solar panels, raising water temperature According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a trade group, pool heating accounts for the largest number of solar installations in the nation , outpacing domestic hot water and solar electric systems. Fresh air and ventilation to a home are essential for health and well being. The “Fresh Air” skylight by veluxusa.com requires no wiring and opens and closes using a solar-pow-ered battery. In case of rain, an integrated rain sensor closes the skylight. SE
