Re: ―Is organic really organic and natural really
natural?‖
By Nataly Pak
From the last issue of NUEUR, I have read
about the advantages and the disadvantages of all-
natural skin care. It has been a great help for me
personally because I have been interested in
organic skin care. Through the article, I was able
to know to what extent I should use the terms,
―organic,‖ or ―natural.‖ As much as I appreciated
the article, I think there are some points that need
to be cleared out.
The article stated that the chemical trying to
neutralize and balance the toxic from the skin care
product will somehow harm our skin. Yes, this is
true. However, all-natural substances seemed to
have, obviously, less toxic than non-all-natural
materials. The level of harmfulness had to clearly
be stated because when all-natural and normal
skin care products are compared, it is clearly all-
natural skin care products that is healthier for our
skin.
All-natural skin care products have a
downside of having less concentration which can
mean lower effectiveness. However, it was nice to
know how costumers can easily get convinced
with over exaggeration of companies’ marketing.
It is important to now for yourself what is good or
bad.

R ANDOM
SKIN CARE TIPS Grapes Grapes have various vitamins other than glucose and fructose. These enhance the action of skin cells, are good for reviving skin and have detoxification effects. Watermelon Watermelons provide water to skin that is exhausted by strong heat and are also good for easing fatigue their large great amounts of glucose and fructose. Tomatoes Tomatoes have lots of pectin, a vegetable fiber. They help blood circulation, which is vital for a good complexion. Apply the pulp of a tomato liberally to the face and leave for an hour. Then wash off with warm water. Cucumber Cucumber is a surprising beauty secret for the skin, with its hydrating, nourishing and astringent properties. Corn Corn is effective for preventing
dryness and aging of your skin since it has lots of lecithin and vitamin E.
1. Do you think that eating chocolate or greasy
French fries is what has caused the acne on your
face? Wrong answer. In fact, food does not relate
to the excess oil production and bacteria that
causes most acne. But, a healthy diet will help
your body to fight off the bacteria more
successfully and therefore should be a party of
any good skin care regimen.
2. Do you wash your face with the same bar of soap
that you use on your body? This could be a problem.
Most soap will draw out and cause your body to lose
the necessary oils that it needs to stay soft and
comfortable. You should always use a facial specific
wash for your face.
3. Exfoliating is a key ingredient and a skin care fact
not to miss. There is no doubt that we all need to have
exfoliating treatments done but you can often
purchase these products right from the web. No need
for a solon trip here. Instead, purchase a good quality
product that will help to exfoliating the skin and get
rid of dead skin cells there. Those cells feed bacteria
and they also cause your pores to become blocked
leading to unhealthy skin.

TANNING
BEDS VS . FDA The so-called ―tanning tax‖ has been
added to the costumers of tanning beds due
to the risk of getting tanned via tanning
beds. The Obama administration taxed the
tanning salons with 10% tax to insure the
health of the citizens.
It was finalized that the tanning beds
may raised the costumers of tanning beds
under the age of 30’s risk of having
Melanoma to 75%. It was suggested that to
prevent such harmful skin cancer, there
should be a precautious warnings about the
tanning beds like the warning sign on the
cigarette boxes. The reason why this issue
is being dealt so sensitively is because
Melanoma is the deadliest skin cancer that
a person can get which is not easily cured.
Additionally, 90 percent of all American
Melanoma skin tumor patients got the
disease because of exposure to ultraviolet
radiation. The government and health
organizations needed to reduce the number
of patients dying from Melanoma.
It was confirmed that UV radiation
tanning was safe under FDA rules.
However, after this being proved false,
individuals as well as associations such as
Melanoma Research Foundation and the
Food and Drug Administration are paying
closer attention to the health factors of this
device. Some agencies have already
suggested to move the tanning beds into
―the highest cancer risk category,‖ and to
label it as ―carcinogenic to humans.‖
However, the controversy of this
matter comes from the Indoor Tanning
Association. They stated that many of the
customers are fully aware of the benefits of
the device as well. Their argument is that
the claims about the effects of tanning beds
are exaggerated and therefore the tax
should not be added even if the original tax
of 5% is reduced.
While lawmakers look deeper into
this case, it is suggested that the costumers
stay cautious about the risks of accessing
the tanning beds. The Tanning Bed Cancer
Control Act of 2010 has been made in the
House. It is hopeful that through this Act,
the awareness will arise regarding the
health related factors by tanning beds.

Before getting off the car,
the child’s mom covers her
daughter with sunscreen lotion of
SPF 30, head-to-toe. After play-
ing for few hours, the daughter’s
skin turned pink as watermelon.
To prevent further sunburn, the
mom reapplied the sunscreen
over and over again. Although the
sunscreen claimed to be water
resistant and to have all-day pro-
tection, it didn’t seem to stay on
for a long time. The child’s mom
had to reapply the lotion not only
on to her daughter, but also to
herself and her husband numer-
ous times. At the end of the day,
the sunscreen bottle was empty.
From a young age, we are
very much used to putting sun-
screen on every summer. It al-
most seems like it is one of all
mother’s job to keep reminding
themselves to apply sunscreen on
their child regularly. As we grow
older, we start to hear how im-
portant it is to protect our skin
from the harmful sun rays. How-
ever, do we really know why it is
so crucial and what it really does?
Why apply the sunscreen so
strenuously? Does it even do its
job?
Why use sunscreen?
For years, dermatologists empha-
sized how important it is to pro-
tect our skin from ultraviolet rays
from the sun. Additionally, we
should all know ―that more than
90 percent of all skin cancers are
caused by sun exposure; that the
risk for a future skin cancer dou-
bles with five or more sunburns;
and that while the jury is still out,
the risk of future melanoma, the
deadliest form of skin cancer,
may well be increased by even
one blistering sunburn in child-
hood.‖ (BRODY 1) Symptoms
of melanoma caused by sunburn
include edema, itching, peeling
skin, rash, nausea, fever, and
syncope. This most deadly skin
cancer is known to be difficult
to heal from. Sunburn can occur
in less than 30 seconds but that
is not how skin starts to react
with skin cancer. When skin
molecules are exposed to the
sun to the point when skin starts
to get sunburned over many
times is when the disease starts
to spread. Although there may
be other alternatives to sun-
screen such as the sun protec-
tive clothing, it is strongly sug-
gested that we use sunscreen.
Issues regarding sunscreen
Knowing that sun ex-
posure will damage our skin,
applying sunscreen became a
part of our skin-care routine.
Recently, with the increase in
sunscreen demand, there has
been some questions and con-
troversies concerning the effec-
tiveness of the sunscreen, the
over exaggeration of the prod-
uct descriptions, and the safety
of the sunscreens.
The back of sunscreen
bottles claims, ―All-day Protec-
tion! Ultra Sweat-proof! Total
Block! Continuous Protection!
Ultra Sport! Instant Protection!
Extra UVA Protec-
tion!‖ (SINGER 1) Connecti-

screens are deceptively and
misleadingly labeled, most
perniciously to give consum-
ers a false sense of security.
(SINGER 1) Dermatologists
stated that the SPF level may
be accurate but other descrip-
tions such as ―all-day protec-
tion,‖ and ―absolute water
proof,‖ may be misleading.
The label issues have been an
on-going issue between the
F.D.A. and the production
companies. Whilst the contro-
versies, the consumers are
confused what to rely upon.
However, the applica-
tion of sunscreen is still
strongly encouraged. Well,
here is the ultimate truth: sun-
screens can impede sunburn
and lower the incidence of at
least one form of skin cancer in
humans. (SINGER 1) Sun-
screen alone cannot protect us
completely or even enough.
Then how do we prevent from
harming our skin? Although
some consumers worry about
getting less vitamin D from the
sun because of the sunscreen,
sunscreen is yet the best choice.
According to all of the derma-
tologists’ suggestion, Sun-
screen should be put on regu-
larly since the skin damage we
get from the UV ray is far
more influential than consum-
ing vitamin D. In fact, we do
consume enough vitamin D
even with our sunscreens on.
Because there is no
choice but to apply sunscreen
to prevent sunburn, F.D.A. has
made new rules to pass the
labeling of products. Although
the effect of it will show few
years later, the consumers can
actually know what they are
getting from the drug store
because of these new restric-
tions. (SINGER 1)
Reaching for sunscreen
on the shelves of drug stores be-
fore summer vacation seems like
an ordinary scene. However, if we
keep in mind what the product
actually contains and what the
performance of it can do to us, we
should be getting the most of how
sunscreen can benefit us.

Then, there is the safety issue.
Dr. Warwick L. Morison, pro-
fessor of dermatology at Johns
Hopkins and chairman of the
Skin Cancer Foundation’s
photobiology committee,
quoted, ―using this scale [the
sunscreen rating system] to say
a sunscreen offers good pro-
tection or bad protection is
junk science.‖ (PARKER-
POPE 1) But there weren’t
enough evidence to firmly
state that the system is inaccu-
rate. Also, an analysis done by
the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention concluded
that 97 percent of the sun-
screen samples had oxyben-
zone which is a chemical
harmful to our skin. However,
they have also observed that
the harmful reaction to our
skin caused by oxybenzone
only occurs when the ultravio-
let light reached sunscreen that
had penetrated the skin.
(PARKER-POPE 1) Therefore,
the one solution happens to be
keep applying sunscreen to
block ultraviolet radiation. The
Center also suggested not to
just focus on sunscreen but to
protect in a package: wearing a
hat, staying out of the sun, etc.
So the answer boils
down to this: application of
sunscreen is essential in order
to lessen the chance of getting
skin cancer, especially mela-
noma. Although the slogans
stated for marketing purpose
on the sunscreens are not
100% reliable, consumers
should remember that sun-
screen is only one step of skin
protection from UV ray expo-
sure. Therefore sunscreen
should be applied to our skin
continuously despite the fact
that it is very easy to forget to
put on sunscreen every day.

HOW TO:
HOMEMADE SOAP
You’ll need...
● A small plastic dishpan about 10``12``
● A glass of enamel 2-quart saucepan
● 1 can of lye, 12 ounces
● 3 pounds of lard
● Plastic gloves
● Water
You’ll do...
1. Pour 3 cups of very cold water (refrigerate water
overnight first) into the 2-quart saucepan.
2. Slowly and carefully add the lye, a little bit at a
time, stirring it with the a wooden or plastic utensil.
(Use plastic gloves for this; test them for holes
first.) Do not breathe the vapor or lean over the
container or have children nearby. Above all _use
no metal_. The mixture will get very hot. In olden
days, a sassafras branch was used to stir,
imparting a fragrance and insect deterrent for
mosquitoes, lice, fleas and ticks.
3. Let cool at least one hour in a safe place.
Meanwhile, the unwrapped lard should be
warming up to room temperature in the plastic
dishpan.
4. Slowly and carefully, pour the lye solution into
the dishpan with the lard. The lard will melt. Mix
thoroughly, at least 15 minutes, until it looks like
thick pudding.
5. Let it set until the next morning, then cut it into
bars. It will get harder after a few days. Then
package.
If you wish to make soap based on olive oil, use
about 48 ounces. It may need to harden for a
week.

LUEUR OPNION: SKIN CARE PRODUCTS
Skin Care Product Navigation By Nataly Pak
The industry of skin care product is
growing larger every day as the society’s
attention to beauty care focuses heavily on
beautiful and healthy skin. The industry
promotes new products every day and society
strives for new and advanced skin care
products to maintain or improve their skin
conditions. But the problem is that the people
seem to fix in their skin to the product these
days while it should be the other way around.
This may be an obvious result of desiring
better skin. However, people look everywhere
around the world to get better products (which
does not mean better skin for them). The
previous issue of this magazine suggested that
the efforts in looking for better product will
eventually lead to better skin since science
and technology in making better products is
improving. Although this may be true to some
extent, it can be misleading.
The skin care products are there for you
to improve your skin. You do not, at all, need
to match yourself to the products. It seems
like many consumers are trying to get the
newest and the most expensive product as
many as they possible can in the market. They
also use a product in order to use another
without knowing what their skin actually
needs. I personally think that, in this method,
the skin care products are used excessively.
Yes, it is very helpful to put sunscreens, add
collagens, consume vitamin E, treat acne, and
much more. But are these all necessary for
everyone globally? According to a research,
having thousands of steps at night in applying
skin care products had no better results than
just applying lotion every night. It seems
almost like a waste to look for too much and
expect too much from the skin care products.
A way to prevent excess use and buy of
skin care products is raising awareness.
Selling products in one set will automatically
tempt the consumers to buy the entire package
and use them all. However, it will be very
effective if the product contain several
functions. There are some products like this
already. Also, skin care product consumers
should pay more attention in product selection.
There are some ingredients to look for and to
avoid. If the consumers are more aware these
small aspects, they will be able to lessen
excessive usage of unnecessary products.
The most important step of skin care is
the product selection. And during this process,
it is vital to remember that it is best to know
your personal skin type. The key to beautiful
and healthy skin is finding the right skin care
product-not using thousands of any products
at once.

INTERVIEW:
CHI-WOOK PARK
Interview with Chi-Wook Park: head manager of “fresh”
Chi-Wook Park, the current head manager of the natural cosmetic brand, ―fresh,‖ Korea
branch, had a lot to talk about even through e-mailing. He managed to take some time from his busy
work to help the public to understand the importance of natural skin care and some misconceptions
of it.
Chi-Wook Park, after graduating a business school in New York, U.S.A., didn’t immediately
start his job as the top coordinator of the well-known cosmetic company. After working in several
other companies, he finally launched a Korea branch for ―fresh,‖ which was a success.
* What is the trend this spring and summer in terms of skin care?
The unique thing about this year’s trend is that it is changing rapidly. However, it is very
focused on the most basic skin care such as cleansing. As summer approaches, costumers
seem to pay greater attention to cleansing. Cleansing is actually the most important step in
skin care. Also organic sunscreens are great seller as well.
* Which product is a hit these days?
Obviously, anti-ageing products are the steady seller. However, I have noticed that the
demand in whitening serum decreased especially in Asia. Whitening and brightening
products were selling very well here in Korea even until last fall. However, right now, having
clear skin and having nice skin tone seems to be the greater matter.
* Has demand in skin care product change over the past few years?
I started this job about five years ago and there definitely has been a continuous increase in
the demands of skin care products. The only difference would be the type of products sold in
different seasons.
* What seems to be the biggest problem when consumers select their products?
It is great to try new things but sometimes it seems like some consumers do not consider their
own skin type and buy what seems nice. What you hear outside is not the review from
yourself. Just keep in mind of those comments and still focus on buying ―your‖ skin care
products.
* What are some helpful tips that you would like to advise to the product users?
I would like to emphasize that it is not how much you use-it’s about how regularly, and
continuously, and how well you apply the products. Sometimes it is misunderstood that
following all the steps that the companies suggest is the best way. This is not true. Everyone
has different kinds of skin. Those are just suggestions and the most important thing in
mastering skin care is finding your own way that fits your type of skin.
* What is so special about fresh?
We believe that nice and healthy skin starts from clean skin. We try our best to produce the
most organic and healthy lotion, essence, toner, etc. Our products are safe and beneficial at
the same time.
As many organic cosmetic companies suggest, the best way to use the all-natural products
effectively is to know your skin and select the products accordingly-don’t overdo. Park ended his
interview by emphasizing the significance of skin care product selections.
VAVELTA? EDITORIAL
Controversy on the new anti-aging treatment
May 25, 2010
By Nataly Pak
Intercytex, a British biomedical company, has recently introduced the newest anti-
aging treatment, Vavelta. ―Vavelta is a clear liquid derived from baby’s foreskin, donated by
mothers who had their babies just circumcised.‖ (Black 1) The liquid is used to be injected
into adult’s damaged skin caused by burns and acnes. The results are promising so far. It
claims to be permanent and that it ―rejuvenate and revitalize damaged, aging skin from the
inside by actually repopulating the lower skin layers with millions of healthy young skin
cells.‖ ("SKIN CARE AND BEAUTY" 1)
The dermatologists seem to find this method interesting and impressive. However, they
suggest further investigation on the liquid. Because of the potential downsides such as
infection, the dermatologists are hesitant to adapt this treatment to the U.S.
Using the foreskin of newly circumcised baby under mother’s agreement seems
abnormal. However, this method does not make the cells make its own collagen by itself but
directly injects the collagen into the skin. Just a small amount of the foreskin will make
hundreds of Vavelta because the cells can reproduce. Unlike other anti-aging cream, Botox,
and many other skin treatments, Vavelta claims to be permanent and to make the liquid
actually turn into a part of the cells of injected skin.
Currently, Vavelta is going through trials. If it wins the FDA approval, it will begin its
work in the United States. However, that would be at least three or four year later. And the
prediction is that mass population will want to experience the treatment.
This new wave in the field of anti-ageing has some controversy along with it. Since it is
still using human’s tissue and injecting it into another human body, the treatment brings a
high potential of certain group of people going against this treatment.
The controversy upon the viability of the new anti-aging treatment is and will be an on
-going debate. People want to get rid of wrinkles and look younger. However, some people
wouldn’t want the treatment knowing what it is made out of. Considering many areas like
cosmetics, medical, religious, and etc., the controversy seems to build bigger gap, not making
any progress in consensus. However, the FDA’s approval or disapproval will soon be
announced and that will finalize and determine the introduction of Vavelta to the U.S. As
much as the benefits are clearly shown, the cons should be considered thoroughly before this
topic becomes a nation-wide debate.
