ilipino congressmen stayed awake up to the

wee hours in the morning of December 13, to

vote for the passage of the RH Bill or House

Bill No. 4244 in its second reading.

The people whom the Filipinos have chosen to

represent them in pushing for legislations that are

supposed to improve their way of life, protect and

preserve their lives and safeguard them from abuse

have finally spoken and have come out in the open

to manifest their side. Courageous they maybe,

there were even more who hid behind anonymity

and asked that they just cast their vote without ex-

plaining only to realize that they voted in the nega-

tive. It is surprising that a glaring number of men

were against passage of the bill and openly drew the

line by arguing on the moral, ethical and practical

sides of the issue while women who are supposed to

be the subject of contention were more aggressive

in pushing for the controversial bill.

Time and time again, House Bill 4244 has

been branded as anti-family; anti-poor and

anti-catholic. It is obvious that these argu-

ments are valid. Deceptions coat the bill that

even those who root for its passage into law are

not really sure of its outcomes. It addresses

the health of poor women especially those in

the boondocks and hinterlands of the country.

Addressing the welfare and health of women

does not require new legislation, as verbalized

by some of the congressmen who are more sen-

sitive than the others; there are already laws

which just need enactment, commitment and

staunch support by all concerned to imple-

ment them. What is astounding in the bill is

that the focus are the poor, marginalized andto page 5

WE have to learn how to copewith these situations. They areunavoidable in life. As the Bookof Ecclesiastes says: There is a

time to weep, and a time to laugh.A time to mourn, and a time todance...a time to get, and a time tolose...All things have their

season, and in their times allthings pass under heaven.

So, lets just take it easy, and

avoid getting upset or afraid ordesperate unnecessarily. God is incontrol. What we have to do is tocarry out what clearly is incum-

bent on usour ordinary work, our daily duties that should bedone with love for God and oth-ers.

    We should avoid extrapolating

things out of a misplacedzeal, or self-righteousness,or simply out of fear tolose and desire to win anddominate. Gods all-abiding

providence is driven solelyout of love and mercy. Hisustice is included there.

And while we can notfully decipher the mysteryof Gods ways and provi-dence, we have to see to itthat we too are driven bylove and mercy in our at-titude and reactions to any-thin that ha ens in our

    life.Our sense of justice

should be subordinated tolove and mercy. Our plansand strategies, the movesthat we have to make, should be animated solely

by love and mercy. This isGods way as shown clear-ly by Christ and the saintswho followed him.

    THE COMING OF ELIJAH

The disciples asked Jesus, Why do the scribes say that Elijah mustcome rst? he said in reply, Elijah will indeed come and restore allthings; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not rec-ognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Sonof Man suffer at their hands. Then the disciples understood that he wasspeaking to them of John the Baptist.

    OBSTACLES TO REFORM

Jesus and his disciples came down the mountain following theTransguration. They had just seen Elijah speaking with Jesus. It wasvery natural that they would ask about him. Jesus however, continuedto praise John the Baptist as a prophet surely equal to Elijah. Elijah hadcome to reform the people and likewise, this was the mission of Johnthe Baptist. Both of them were opposed by the people although they re-spected these men for their true holiness. In Johns case the oppositionto his preaching the truth became so strong that he was nally put todeath. God sent Elijah and John as his messengers to remind the peopleof their need to change their way of life and to be a holy people. Duringthis time of Advent, have I accepted from God through his Church the

grace to change my way of life and strive for holiness? Do I opposeGods grace by my spiritual laziness, my indifference and my neglect?Am I really grateful that God gives me this present time to be holy inhis service? (Daily Gospel Now, R. The Bill, if passed intolaw will make Filipino fam-ilies as puppets and poormothers or women willbecome unwilling guineapigs. It is worst because thereal architects of the laware not really the Filipinolawmakers who stayedup late last December 13but the international elitegroups that decide the fateof the world. Countriesand governments that donot adhere to their whimsget sanctioned; they are notgiven grants and assistanceand their economic activi-ties are readily sabotaged. It is easy for these people toallow such grim sanctionsbecause whether we like itor not, the world is actuallyowned by a few mighty andwealthy people who can-not tolerate to co-exist withthe weak, the poor and the

    hopelessly bent.It is anti-family because

the RH Bill or whatevernew name they have carvedwill create disunity in thefamily. This is where moth-ers will be against daugh-ters or father against sons. . . Instead of looking atchildren as gifts, they will

be looked upon as liabili-ties. It is easy to distort theconsciousness and mindsof people, and we havenoted this phenomenon inadvanced countries wherecouples no longer like tohave children. These cou-ples concentrate in enrich-ing themselves until they nolonger want to raise a fam-ily. They want to indulge in

sex but not its fruits whichin the days of old were con-sidered gifts and blessing, sources of joy in the family.Families have become ma-terialistic putting the gaugeof success on the size andquantity of their houses, number of cars or bankaccounts, yet still cravingfor more until greed sets innever realizing that whenthey have more things thatthey do not actually need, they are depriving othersfrom having those things.Where sharing was a vir-tue; greed, insatiabilitythat breed corruption are

most part simply keep quietduring his trial? What is thesignicance of his reply toPilate, My kingdom is notof this world...? Why didhe allow himself to be buf-feted, crowned with thorns, crucied, pierced by aspear, and nally to die?

Lets consider the livesof some saints. St. John ofthe Cross, for example. Hewas really badly treatedeven by his own confrereswho imprisoned him in a

dark dungeon for 6 months. If he was not a man ofGod, he would have gonecrazy and died. But instead,he found light in darkness, and a certain freedom ofsoul in his forced physicalconnement. And from thatexperience, he produced avery lyrical set of poems

that savored exquisitely ofthe spiritual, mystical andsupernatural.

Now that we are intothe RH Bill debate, and it

seems that the pro-RH sideis gaining headway, weshould learn how to keepour cool not just out of tac-tic but rather out of love andcomplete trust in the provi-dence of God.

But it should not be thecool of not doing anything. We need to intensify our

prayers and sacrices, andlaunch into a more ardentcampaign of evangelizationabout human life and sexu-ality, marriage and family, etc. The idea is not to defeatopponents to the faith. It

is to convert them. For this, we need to

study the doctrine of ourfaith very well, assimilat-ing them to the extent ofmaking it the esh of ouresh, and then quietly andcontinuously going intoa personal apostolate offriendship and condencewhere from heart to heart, and not through the noise ofthe world, we transmit thesaving truths of our faithrelevant to the RH Bill.

Lets not waste timejudging the motives ofthose who are pro-RH.

Thats not our task. Andin the gospel, we alreadyknow the possible motivesof those who killed Christ. There was pride, hatred, envy, articulated in a vari-ety of ways that ultimatelyled to Christs crucixion.

But in the end, Christasked his Father to forgivethemfor they know notwhat they were doing. Thisis the extreme of charity towhich we are also called. But for all that, we have torealize also that we need todefend our faith, the truth incharity.

And so, we can also gothrough the human meansavailable for this purposewithout losing the spirit

proper of a child of God.Yes, we can enter into de-

bates, join rallies, do allsorts of political maneu-vers, but in charity.

ane Times reported theindictments Much of the

    ounty and privilege the

Marcoses acquired in yearsof powerdisappeared withthe fog of revolution, theAustralian daily said.

From 1966 to 1986, Bau-tista held a $3,000-a-monthrst secretary post at thePhilippine Mission to theUN. In fact, she served asImeldas eyes and ears to fac-

totum for Marcos functionsat 16-bedroom Lindenmerehouse on Long Island. Sheacted as bag lady for shop-ping sprees..

This Oct. 13, 1977 entryappears in Chronology ofthe Marcos Plunder com-piled by Charlie Avila To-day, after addressing the UNGeneral Assembly, Imeldacelebrated by going shop-ping and spending $384,000including $50,000 for aplatinum bracelet with ru-bies; $50,000 for a diamondbracelet; and $58,000 for apin set with diamonds. Theday before, Vilma Bautista, one of her private secretar-ies, paid $18,500 for a goldpendant with diamonds andemeralds; $9,450 for a goldring with diamonds and em-eralds; and $4,800 for a goldand diamond necklace.

The US Federal Court(9th Circuit ) whacked Im-elda and Ferdinand Jr witha daily ne of $100,000 fortrying to secretly ship out ofthe US paintings and otherartworks from contestedholdings for a 25-percent,tax-free share. When thecontempt order expired, thetab totaled $353.6 million.

Where do Vilma Bautistaand nephews come from? Tounderstand, browse thru ADynasty on Steroids, writ-ten by Jackie Dent, availableon the Net.

Dry, sleepy, tobacco-growing Ilocos Norte re-mains Marcos territory, as ithas been since 1949. --- al-though the Marcos regimekilled more than 3200 peo-ple, tortured 35,000 and in-carcerated 70,000. That sur-

passed even the brutality ofChiles Augusto Pinochet .

The Laurel clan runsBatangas; Osmeas (usedto monopolize) Cebu; theLpez family manages Iloilo, etc. Do the Marcoses merelyperpetuate oligarchic politicsthat plagues the country?, Ialways nd return to poli-tics a misnomer, FerdinandJr snaps. We never left. Or,as Imee remarks drolly: It isnepotism plus plus, a dynastyon steroids.

Does a Marcos have torun all the time? Its thewhole Filipino system - theyreally count on you, they

have all these expectations,Imee says. Your family istaking care of their family, which is taking care of yourfamily and it just goes on andon and on. Its pretty feudalin the Philippines still, eventhough we like to fool our-selves.

    That includes Bongbong?

He seems to think that hisfamily did nothing wrongand has nothing to apologizefor. He says they have eitherwon cases or they have beendismissedWe have a judg-ment against us in the bil-lions. What more would peo-ple want? That we open ourveins and die before them?Is that the solution?...Historywill be the best judge of thefamily.

Benito Mussolini wasexecuted outside an Italianvilla; Gadda died in thedesert, killed by rebels; Rob-ert Mugabe and Castro willprobably die in power. Whyare Filipinos so willing toembrace the Marcos familyagain?, Dent wonders.

Filipinos have a soft, forgiving culture, notes for-mer Singapore Prime Min-ister Lee Kuan Yew in hisbook: From Third World toFirst: Only in the Philip-pines could a leader likeFerdinand Marcos, who pil-laged his country for over 20years, still be considered fora national burial. Insigni-cant amounts of the loot havebeen recovered, yet his wifeand children were allowedto return and engage in poli-tics.

Your brother [Bong-bong] says that politics is thenational sport here, Denttells Imee. She replies: Itsnot very sporting, though. Nofair play, no rules, very mov-able goal posts. Not quite

right as a sport. It is better assomething else. Vaudeville, maybe?

    Spell that ascaaaaaaaaassshhhh.

CEBU CITY -- The Na-tional Union of Journalistsof the Philippines (NUJP)has condemned two mem-bers of Manny Pacquiaosteam for attacking anAmerican photojournalistlast weekend.

Group slams Manny Pacquiaos men for hitting photographerThe National Union of

Journalists of the Philip-pine deplores the attack ona photojournalist by MannyPacquiaos assistant trainerBuboy Fernandez, and ad-viser Michael Koncz, afterthe boxing champions re-

cent loss to Juan ManuelMarquez, NUJP said in astatement, which was post-ed at Interaksyon.com.

Pacquiao adviser Mi-chael Koncz and trainerBuboy Fernandez attackedGetty Images photographerAl Bello after Pacquiaos

brutal sixth round knockoutin the hands of Mexican ri-val Juan Manuel Marquezlast Sunday.

It is clear that Bellowas merely performing hisobligations as a photojour-nalist and, besides, had eve-ry right to take pictures ofthe fallen Pacquiao, said

    NUJP.Apparently Koncz and

Fernandez were irked thatBello continued shoot-ing pictures of Pacquiaoslumped and motionlessPacquiao in the canvas de-spite Freddie Roachs com-

    mand to stop taking pic-tures.

    Koncz and Fernandez

had absolutely no reason toattack him and their doingso was actually in the na-ture of a criminal act, just asPacquiaos trainer FreddieRoach had no right to orderBello to stop taking photos, although Roach later apolo-gized for doing so, accord-

ing to the photographer.NUJP has called out toPacquiao, who just arrivedin the Philippines, to givethe necessary disciplinaryactions to both Koncz andFernandez.

Manny Pacquiao him-self should take actionagainst these two, whose

boorish and unsportsman-like reaction to the loss canonly tarnish the reputationfor sportsmanship that hasendeared him to millions offans.

The Nevada State Ath-letic Commission will re-

view the untoward incidentthat happened last week-end. (SUNNEX)
