Kohler among five public schoolsnominated for National Blue Ribbon Schools Program award

On the heals of producing thehighest composite score in thestate for the ACT college entranceexam, and scoring the highestamong the state’s public highschools in Wisconsins’s new ac-countability system, Kohler HighSchool is one of only five schoolsin the state to be nominated byState Superintendent Tony Eversfor the National Blue RibbonSchools Program, which recog-nizes overall academic excellenceor progress in improving studentachievement.

Kohler is the only high school toreceive the nomination, as theother four contenders are elemen-tary schools, including CountryMeadows Elementary School inthe Muskego-Norway School Dis-trict; Grafton Elementary Schoolin the Grafton School District;Ridgeway Elementary School in

the Dodgeville School District;and Suamico Elementary Schoolin the Howard-SuamicoSchool District.

“Blue RibbonSchool nominees putstudent achievementfront and center,”Evers said. “Theteachers, school lead-ers, and staff members aswell as the school communitycome together to support high lev-els of learning for all students.”

According to a Wisconsin De-partment of Instruction press re-lease, the Blue Ribbon SchoolsProgram began in 1982 and hasrecognized nearly 7,000 of Amer-ica’s schools over 30 years. Selec-tion criteria require that schoolshave at least 100 students and beopen for at least five years.Schools must have met adequate

yearly progress targets in 2010-11and annual measurable objectives

for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.

Awards will be givento schools in two cat-egories. “ExemplaryHigh PerformingSchools” are those

that are in the top 15percent for performance

levels on the state’s readingand mathematics assessments anddisaggregated results for studentgroups show similar academicachievement. “Exemplary Improv-ing Schools” have at least 40 per-cent of students fromdisadvantaged backgrounds andhave made the most progress inimproving student achievement onstate assessments. Schools receiv-ing this award are among the top10 percent for both reading and

mathematics gains in proficiencylevels for all students. Addition-ally, disaggregated results for stu-dent subgroups, including studentsfrom disadvantaged backgrounds, show improvement similar to thatof all students.

According to the U.S. Depart-ment of Education website, schools benfit by being recognizedas National Blue Ribbon Schoolbecause it allows them shine undera national spotlight for all the rightreasons, and acknowledges andvalidates the hard work of stu-dents, educators, families, andcommunities in striving for—andattaining—exemplary achieve-ment. For many, attaining the Na-tional Blue Ribbon School awardis the realization of a long-helddream.

National Blue Ribbon Schoolsserve as models for other schools

throughout the nation, and schoolpersonnel are often sought out asmentors. Their applications areposted on the U.S. Department ofEducation's website, and media ea-gerly profile recognized schools, helping the school, its district, andcommunity gain additional expo-sure. Representatives from schoolsare honored at an annual awardsceremony held in Washington, DC.Each school receives an engravedplaque and program flag with theofficial seal which signifies its sta-tus and the year of its award.

This won’t be the first time forKohler, however. The school wonthe award in 1988-89.

“Best wishes to these schools asthey complete the Blue RibbonSchools application and undergothe national review process,”Evers said. Awards are typicallyannounced in early September.
