Iii u remit Interview with a citlu-n ot Brooklyn who makes dummies, 1 acquired oonsldemblc lufonimtlon relating to this branch ot tho a r t of wood carving which proved entertaining as well as Instructive. As I entered his placu of businwss ho was busily engaged in putting tho finishing touches of color ou a huge, grim looking Indian, which vainly tried to luok mo out of counten-anco during my convenatlou with Its owner.

"1 always finish them up myself," said he, "for no two jninlers tastes, aro alike, and I Uko to havo them finished to my tasto as nearly as posniblo, Tho fin -, big fellow goes to New Orleans to-morrow, und will bring lie n ncot sum, too,**

"You weru never more mistaken lii|}-our lifo. Wo uso soft pine for carving en-tirely. I get my logs from a spar yard down In Erlo basiu, |iay from IW to CO cent* jier running foot for them, and they aro mostly ruds whleh havo been detaehed from logs in conttrucling spars and masts in tho yard. "ITio only thing we llnd to contend with is the number of knots always found lu pine logs, hut it's the only kind that's over Ikvii used, 10 I taku it for granted it's the best."

"What was tho origin of dummy carving, or is it not a trade in itu lf, but a hmnch of the common wood carving trader '

" I don't know how ilummien In the first IJaii' lieoamc awiclated with the tobacco bus-iness, hut thin 1 do know. "How do you commenco work ou af lgurcr ' 1 asked.

"It is the simplest thing in tho world. The log is suspended horiiontally between two blocks, just high enough for tho carver to reach handily, llo draws with |>encll tho outline of front and Iwck of thn proposed figure, and hews it out roughly to within half an Inch of the line. Then tho log is turned overandahku pmcoM Is gotio through re-garding tho sides, which completed tho fine work begins. Tho sharp tools are produced tho carver puts Ills thinking cap ou, and in the couno of n few days a perfectly formed aud expressive facu will havo mad., its n|t-poamnee. It's tedious n ork, but a figure liko that will bring mo about $1.10, and an averago sited one from $£i to $100, according to dodgn."

"What do you pay your carvers after their spending so many years acquiring tho necca-sary knowlcdger

"Fom- dollars |)er day is tho highest rato paid, and as steady work can never Iw assured It is u very low prieo for Hie work done."

The poslolllco was moved Saturday night lutoliilTord's store, and E. P. can now write P. M. after his name. Ex-postmaster Payno is acting as deputy postmaster for tho present.

The Kid Band in this village is now ihorotighly organized and promises lo be one of the features of Saranac. They have rehcrsais Tuesday evenings. Wo mention this latter fact b o that tho rest-di-nlR of the village will not bo alarmed at any unexplamablo noises thoy may hear.

A couple of y.ning follows placed thenvselves In an unenviablo condition a week ago last Sunday at the Union church at South Boston. They went there during services very much under tho influence of ho'.d cider and made quit* a disturbance, so much so that Ibe people of that community felt very m dignont over the matter.—f-oco/.

In 1888 he came and settled in Vergennes. whore he hewed himself a home out of the forest, and followed tho avocation of a fanner until 18'i3, when ho was elected Treasurer of Kent County, and moved to Grand Rapids. He served in that capacity for eight vears, and in 1^00 returned to the homestead. Ik-was always a staunch republican and loyal to the cause of liberty aud the Union, and besides allowing his two sons, John S. and Jerome T., who were then 15 and 10 years ot ago, rospectlvely, lo enlist in their country's couso, he was very enthusiastic in raisiiiK iroo|M for the army. He was a man always to bo trnsied. and many wore iho soldiers who, when they left for the war. entrusted their elTecls to his care; and never was a trust betrayed by him. A widow, and two sons, abovo named, remain to mourn his departure. Tho funeral was held at the home of J. S. Daniels, In Vergennes, Satimlav after-noon, Rev. J. T. Husted ofliciating. Thus ono more of our well-known and once sturdy pioneers has passed away.
