Register Now for the 2011-2012 School YearAttending classes at the Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center means joining more than 3,000 adults like you who are committed to improving their lives through career-technical training. If you’re ready for your new career, now’s the time to get to work. It’s easy to get started:

Call us at 440-774-1051 ext. 2254 to schedule your program’s information session. Sessions run throughout the day, from 8 AM – 10 PM depending on the program.

1. Information sessions will provide you with your program’s curriculum, expectations, employment projections and next steps for enrollment.

2. After the information session, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a financial aid appointment and WorkKeys assessment. The WorkKeys assessment fee is $75.

3. Once your program WorkKeys requirements are fulfilled and your financial aid plan is approved, you are ready to register!

Please note: the above steps can take as much as a month to complete, so get started early to ensure a seat in your program of choice!

Frequently Asked QuestionsWho is eligible to attend?Our programs are open to students 18 years or older who hold a high school diploma or GED and are looking to re-enter the workforce.

What if I don’t have my GED?The JVS Adult Career Center offers FREE GED courses to assist you. To sign up, call our GED coordinator at 440-774-1051 ext. 2241. (Former JVS or other high school students must be 21 to enroll in daytime classes.)

Is Financial Aid available?Many of our students have tuition and books paid for through some type of financial aid, including Pell Grants, Individual Training Accounts through the Employment netWork, Federal Stafford Loans, and Scholarships. Each funding source has different eligibility requirements which may cover all or part of your tuition and educational expenses. Please contact the Adult Career Center and ask to speak with a Financial Aid Coordinator or schedule an appointment at 440-774-1051, ext. 2254.

Is Child Care available?The Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center is working with The Child Garden of Oberlin (located across the street on Route 58, next to Great Clips) to offer evening child care for our students. The facility needs a minimum of 8 students enrolled in order to offer evening child care. If you are interested, contact Director Melanie Dove at 440-775-7057. The Child Garden does accept child care vouchers from the Lorain County Department of Job & Family Services.

Can you help me find a job?The Career Services Office serves as a liaison between students and the employment community. An ongoing database of available employment opportunities is maintained and made available to job seekers. Job seekers are directed to potential employment opportunities based on their skills, training and experience. Employers are encouraged to send job postings to the Career Services Office by mail or fax. Job postings can also be entered directly into our database at www.lcjvs.com under Career Services on the menu bar.

How are you accredited?Our teachers are qualified practitioners in their art of instruction with real work experience in their field and are certified by the Ohio Department of Education. The JVS Adult Career Center is accredited, affiliated and approved by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, Ohio Board of Regents, and Adult Workforce Development. Where are you located?Lorain County JVS is located at the junction of Ohio Route 58 and Ohio Route 20, just south of Oberlin.

I need help with transportation. Can you help?On the first day of class, many of our students coordinate carpool routes to help with transportation needs. If this is not an interest of yours, there are a number of highly interactive JVS courses that are available entirely over the Internet. All of our courses include expert instructors, many of whom are nationally known authors. Our online courses are affordable, fun, fast, convenient, and geared just for you.

Healthcare Medical AssistingState-of-the-Art Medical Lab!Medical Assisting is one of the fastest growing allied health careers which offers wonderful opportunities for advancement! Work in an array of high-demand areas such as physicians’ offices, outpatient clinics, laboratories and urgent care centers. Benefit from real world training with 112 non-paid, supervised clinical hours and a 160-hour externship in a local medical facility. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Training with this program includes eligibility for the AAMA CMA Certification Examination. Gain hands-on experience and exposure to Medical Terminology, Medical Transcription, Office Procedure/Computer Skills, Medical Lab Skills, Medical Law/Ethics, Medical Software, Insurance Coding, CPR/First Aid, Basic Body Structure, Phlebotomy, Patient Assessment and Informational Interviewing. Certified Electronic Health Records Technician — NEW!This certification is a great career option for those who want to join the healthcare industry but prefer no hands-on care. Employment for those with experience using Electronic Health Records is expected to increase by 20 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018. This course will teach the administrative skills needed to work in the front office of a medical facility, in addition to how to assemble patients’ health information including medical history, symptoms, examination results, diagnostic tests, treatment methods, and all other healthcare provider services. Course includes management of electronic health records software, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data requirements and standards, clinical classification and coding systems, data analysis, healthcare reimbursement methods, HIPAA and quality improvement methods. The program contains a non-paid work-based component, as well as a healthcare provider CPR certification. Students will take NHA’s Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist exam at the end of the class. Testing fees are included in tuition. Books extra. Class size limited to 20 students.

Medical OfficeThis program teaches students the basic administrative and clinical skills needed to work in the front or back office of a medical facility. Phlebotomy TechnicianPhlebotomy technicians draw quality blood samples from patients or blood donors and prepare those specimens for medical testing. Many patients have phobias when it comes to blood and needles, and giving blood can be the most difficult part of an office visit. Phlebotomy technicians create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and reliable manner. Upon completion of this program and the NHA national exam, entry-level job opportunities are excellent at hospitals, outpatient clinics or physicians’ labs. Dental Assisting/RadiologyThis program prepares students for a chair-side position in a dental office. The course introduces dental anatomy, terminology, dental specialties, chair-side assisting, laboratory procedures, infection control, sterilization procedures, dental instruments and mixing dental materials. The course also offers a 7-hour initial training course for a Dental Assistant Radiographer. This is the first step towards obtaining a Dental Assistant Radiographer’s certificate in Ohio.
