Local families invited to joinMercy for a behind-the-scene tour of The Surgery Department

Mercy  Regional  Medical  Center

Health

October 23, 2012 -- When children come to the hospital for the first time, they are often scared and anxious about what will happen. To help alleviate that fear, Mercy's surgical services team and pediatrics depart-ment are partnering to present "Travel with Buddy Bear to Surgery" on Wednesday, October 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The tour offers new pediatric patients a reassuring "first visit" to the hospital as seen through the eyes of a friendly stuffed bear patient named Buddy. Surgical services team members will guide children through all of the departments within the operating room, including the holding room, operating room, pediatric department and recovery room and explain what happens at each stop. The goal of the event is to take the mystery out of what happens when a child comes to the hospital for both parent and child. The tour starts on the first floor in the patient entrance lobby of Mercy Regional Medical Center Along with their parents, children will be treated to hands-on activities and demonstrations of basic processes using a teddy bear as the "patient." Refreshments will be served. Reservations are not required. For more information, please call (440) 960-3055.

Lorain National Bank Lives UnitedOctober 18, 2012 -- LIVE UNITED is a mantra that resonates deeply with the employees of Lorain National Bank (LNB). For them, United Way is not just a two-to-three week, once-a-year campaign, it is a year-round effort. The bank is very committed to the community and its commitment dates back to 1905, when the bank began doing business. "United Way is an effective way to give back to the community," said Joan Villarreal, SVP at Lorain National Bank. "It's because of the volunteer involvement and due diligence that United Way performs that makes me feel comfortable that my donation will make a great impact in our community and on people's lives." Whether contributing to the annual campaign through payroll deduction or simply supporting year round events, such as jeans day, annual raffle or Mama Jo Pie's sale, LNB employees are committed to making a difference in their commu-nity. "It is easy to give to United Way at LNB. Our United Way committee offers various opportunities. They make it fun," said Mary Miles, SVP and Director of Human Resources. "It's important to provide many different opportunities to give to United Way so that everyone that wants to, can contrib-ute," said Marianne Kocak, LNB United Way Employee Campaign Manager. "Not everyone can afford to give on a weekly basis. However, they may be willing to give up some money once in a while to participate in a specific activity." The bank's support of United Way and the community is not just financial. Last year, LNB employees donated more than 2,075 hours back to the community. LNB employees are permitted to use work hours to participate in monthly community projects, such as serving lunch at Catholic Charities Family Center, sorting food items for distribution at Second Harvest Food Bank, coordinat-ing children's activities for family fun days and collecting items for school supply drive and Christmas parties at Neighborhood Alliance. Kocak said, "It's a great feeling to give back and see the impact that you can make directly on people. It really touches your heart to see a child's face light up when they receive aChristmas party or gift that they probably would not have gotten otherwise if it was not for you." Daniel Klimas, President and CEO of Lorain National Bank, believes that it is important that commitment to the community is demonstrated by the executive leadership team as well. In addition, the bank provides many of the prizes, including special lunches and paid time off to encourage employees to participate in the various United Way fundraising activities. "One of our primary objectives at LNB is to help our communities to be successful. Participating in United Way is one of the many ways that we can achieve this objective," said Klimas. To be recog-nized with these distinctions affirms that EMH is dedicated to

providing the very best healthcare to the people in the communities we've served for more than a century." According to the Healthgrades study, the risk of death is 75% lower at hospitals receiving 5 stars compared to 1-star rated hospitals. Patients also have a 61% lower risk of complica-tions at 5-star hospitals compared to 1-star rated hospitals. The 2013 performance outcomes are now available free to the public at www.healthgrades.com. For its 2013 hospital quality outcomes analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approxi-mately 40 million Medicare hospital-ization records for services performed from 2009 through 2011 at approximately 4,500 short-term, acute care hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades independently measures hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of being measured, and no hospital pays to be measured. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account each hospital's unique population (demographics and severity of illness). The American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, including the complete methodol-ogy, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality .

Why are you running for public o!ce?

I have been in law enforcement for over 39 years with the past 12 years as Lorain County Sheri". I still enjoy serving the citizens of Lorain County and look forward to coming into work each day. I believe at the Sheri"'s O!ce the men and women do a great job with the limited resources we have had to work with the past three years. I would like to continue to move the Sheri"'s O!ce forward and serve the citizens of this great County.

What would you like to accom-

plish if elected or if re-elected?I would like to continue the collaboration e"orts we have achieved working with the area police departments and the cities and villages on the sharing of information and consolida-tion of services to better serve the public in the most #scally responsible manner.

In what ways can web, mobile

and social technology be used in the government sector? All three are working at area departments right now. This is the wave of the future of sharing instant information with the public through web pages, facebook, twitter, etc... We have equipped our o!cers with mobile data computers, rapid ID units, inboard dash cameras and this technology will continue to grow and we must provide our o!cers with the latest equip-ment to #ght crime.

What one bit of information do people not normally know about you? That I am naturally left-handed, but do many things right handed also.

Born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, the former constitutional law professor, lawyer, community activist and #nancial writer came into national prominence with a show stopping keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, be#tting his reputation as a brilliant orator. In 2008, after a hard fought win against Hillary Clinton to secure the Democratic nomination, the then Senator from Illinois crushed Republican John McCain to become the #rst African American to claim the presidency, concluding his meteoric rise to the pinnacle of American politics.

Mitt Romney

Senator John McCain's defeat to President Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election signaled the reemergence of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as a serious contender and clear favorite for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. The Harvard man has been comfortably leading almost every poll since then. He was knocked o$ his perch for about two months during the summer of 2011, #rst by Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, and then, Texas Governor Rick Perry. However, he recovered, and despite losing the opening caucus in Iowa to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and a short-lived, acrimonious battle in the South against former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, the former venture capitalist steam rolled past his opponents for the rest of the campaign with relative ease. On August 30, 2012, Gov. Romney was nominated as the nominee for President in front of over 15,000 party faithful during the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

The residents of Lorain County deserve a Commissioner that has the experience and leadership abilities to face our tough economic future. It is my hope to improve the quality of life for all Lorain County residents. In what ways can web, mobile and social technology be used in the government sector? The Internet is an essential part of doing business in the county. It is a necessary economic development tool in our e#orts to attract new businesses to our County. The Internet is where site selectors go to !nd out about what Lorain County has to o#er. We use the Internet to put our REAL Team together when a job lead arises in order to address a company’s needs in a timely fashion. We also use it for discovering and applying for grants, in our bidding process, to promote adoptions at the kennel, to educate and to get educated. The list is endless. I wonder how we ever survived without it. What one bit of information do people not normally know about you? I have a very special place in my heart for veterans. You May know County Commissioner Lori Kokoski, but do you know her op-ponent Mike Musto?

Mike Musto was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Novem-ber 21, 1953. He grew up in Cleveland and moved to Westlake in 1963, before graduating from Westlake High School in 1972. While in high school, Mike met his future wife Cindy and started dating after graduation. Two years later, in February of 1975, the couple married. In 1980 Mike and Cindy had their !rst child, Jennifer. Amy, their second child, was born in 1982. Jennifer has since graduated from John Carroll University and works as a Senior Inventory Analyst while Amy graduated from Sanford Brown as a Massage Therapist and is currently enrolled at LCCC to become a RN.Mike and his family are proud to call Cleveland and the Lorain region home their whole lives. In 1995 they purchased six acres of land in Columbia Township to build their home and raise horses. About two years later, four more acres were purchased for a total of ten acres. Not afraid of hard work, Mike knew the !rsttask at hand was to build an outbuilding. Mike and his father started this endeavor and !nished in 1995. Construction then began on their home in 1999 and was completed in 2000.Cindy, Mike’s wife, is an accomplished equestrian and she had always dreamed of a having a horse farm and riding stable. Phil Van TreurenCandidate for Lorain County Commissioner

My family has lived in Lorain County for more than a century. My great-great grandfather was a survivor of the infamous Johnstown $ood in 1889, and he came to Lorain to work at the steel mill and take care of his family. I’m proud to have been born here and wouldn’t want to raise my children anywhere else in the world. My grandparents are my heroes. My grandfather was a union worker at the Ford Plant in Lorain for 38 years, an Army veteran, and he taught me about the importance of hard work, responsibility and family. My ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I and World War II. I was proud to follow in their footsteps and join the Ohio Army National Guard in 2004.Our O"cer Candidate class started out with nearly 50 candidates, and only six of us made it through the program. It was the most di"cult thing I ever did in my life, but I believe that anything worth having is worth working hard for. I absolutely love being an underdog. I love !ghting for what’s right, no matter what the odds are. In 2009, I ran my !rst campaign for Amherst City Council At-Large. I walked more than 400 miles and knocked on doors while wearing my Army Combat Boots, and was honored to be the top vote-getter in the city. I don’t win through dirty campaign-ing or compromising my principles; I win by caring for my constituents and working hard.Being a good father and husband is the most important thing in my life. When I look at my daughter, I realize that we need to be responsible with taxpayer money so that children in Lorain County have a promising future.I don’t think that government or politicians make communi-ties great. I hear some politicians talk about how we should spend the government’s money, but to me, the government doesn’t have any money. It’s the taxpayers’ money, and government needs to be accountable to the people who work hard every day to take care of their families.I wasn’t elected to focus on partisanship or political parties, and I never will. I’ve proven to my constituents that I’ll work hard for them whether they’re Democrats, Republicans or Independents. I’m going to work very hard to earn the respect of Lorain County’s families, and I’ll never forget that our government is responsible to them, NOT the other way around.I’d be honored to receive your vote this year!

However, she realizes that under the current political system, the deck is stacked against any independent running for the o!ce, which explains her reason for registering her candidacy under the Republican banner. Lane also believes that her status as a non-career politician, coupled with her "rst-hand experience in the private sector, makes her uniquely suited for the job.

Explaining his decision not to contest the Democratic nomination, a party he was formerly registered with, karate expert McMillan was quoted as saying "the rent is too damn high." The #amboyant Vietnam veteran also gave some words of advice to President Obama, “If you don’t do your job right, I am coming at you!"

President Barack Obama scored a convincing victory in tonight’s Third Presiden-tial Debate, and in the process, completed a decisive turnaround from a dismal performance in the First Debate. However, and perhaps more crucially, Gov. Mitt Romney’s restrained approach may have achieved an even bigger strategic success with undecided voters and the female demographic. His strategy, clearly designed to negate the image of a hawkish foreign policy under a Romney administration, appeared to score well with undecided voters in several post-debate snap polls, although the true picture may only emerge in several days. In addition, Gov. Romney may also be banking on some points for his non-confrontational approach tonight, in light of the criticisms received by both candidates following the !ery, in-you-face Second Debate last week. Nonethe-less, Gov. Romney’s tactic carried the risk of alienating a segment of his support base, who favors an aggres-sive foreign policy. Presi-dent Obama, who came into the debate with relatively strong foreign policy credentials, was probably thankful, and surprised, at the less than forceful attack by Gov. Romney on the issue of Libya, which gave him the opportunity to dictate the direction of the debate relative to the Middle East. The President also pounced on several of Gov. Romney’s alleged shifts in position, leading to former Massa-chusetts Governor uttering

a well-received quip, “attacking me is not talking about an agenda.” Gov. Romney also appears to advocate a similar foreign policy approach to Presi-dent Obama on Syria, Egypt and drone strikes. The two men only really wrangled on the topic of Israel, and obviously, the size of the Navy (horses and bayonets, anyone) – which has literally turned into the singularly most memorable exchange of three debates, and one that nearly sent the Twitter-sphere into rapture.Gov. Romney: Our Navy is old - excuse me, our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now at under 285. We're headed down to the low 200s if we go through a sequestration. That's unacceptable to me. I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy. Our Air Force is older and smaller than at any time since it was founded in 1947. We've changed for the !rst time since FDR - since FDR we had the - we've always had the strategy of saying we could !ght in two con"icts at once. Now we're chang-ing to one con"ict. Look, this, in my view, is thehighest responsibility of the President of the United States, which is to maintain the safety of the American people. And I will not cut our military budget by a trillion dollars, which is a combina-tion of the budget cuts the president has, as well as the sequestration cuts. That, in my view, is making - is making our future less

certain and less secure. President Obama: Bob, I just need to comment on this. First of all, the sequester is not something that I've proposed. It is something that Congress has proposed. It will not happen. The budget that we are talking about is not reducing our military spend-ing. It is maintaining it. But I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Gover-nor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear subma-rines. And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we're counting slips. It's what are our capabilities. And so when I sit down with the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Sta#, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith with our troops, that also makes sure that our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home. And that is not re"ected in the kind of budget that you're putting forward because it just doesn't work. Keep an eye out for the slate of new polls on Friday. Momentum aside, there is a strong possibility that the winner of the election will be decided by tonight’s debate.

October 21, 2012 -- Lorain County JVS students and sta! once again helped LifeShare Community Blood Services complete a very successful blood drive. Both high school and Adult Career Center students and sta! took time out of their day to donate blood to those in need. "During the two day drive, 177 units of blood were collected," commented Susan Wallace, Allied Health Sciences Instructor and Blood Drive Coordinator. "Lifeshare will award one $500 scholarship to JVS graduating seniors for every 35 units of blood collected. The total from the upcoming Spring Drive on March 5th & 6th will be added to the 177 units from the fall drive and provide scholarship money for graduating seniors next year. Last year we distributed $7,000.00 in scholarship through these e!orts," stated Wallace. Additionally, students in the Allied Health Services assisted in the promotion of the event and manned the registration tables. "According to the recruitment representa-tive from Lifeshare, the JVS has been one of the leading organizations for blood donations," a"rmed JVS Principal, Jill Petitti. "LifeShare was very grateful that our students and sta! rose to the occasion and helped them with their critical need."

"Joe the Plumber"

Samuel WurzelbacherSamuel Joseph Wurzelbacher was born in Toledo in 1973 to Kay and Frank Wurzelbacher and graduated from Spring#eld High School in Holland, OH. Like many young men graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force looking for adventure, a career, and a way to serve the country he loves. What he found was the true de#nition of courage, values that were expected to be played out in day to day life, and a great respect for sel$ess leadership. While in the Air Force, Joe attended tech school at Sheppard Air Force Base to be a plumber and was then stationed in Alaska and North Dakota. Yes, he really is a plumber. Joe left the Air Force in 1996 a little bit wiser and loving his country even more. He worked as a plumber for several years until eventually securing an opportunity in a growing indus-try. He spent the next few years in the emerging telecommunications sector, ultimately working his way up to the position of Communications Engineer. Joe lost his job and the secure life he was building because of his encounter that day. And he, along with the rest of the country, has watched as now President Obama has made good on his threat to “spread the wealth around.” It’s not working for us. It is Joe’s #rm belief that the Federal government must exercise the #scal restraint that all American families value. Spending more than you have and asking your children to become a slave to pay for your irresponsibility is unconscionable--no matter which political party you belong to. Joe is committed to the principle of #scal responsibility in all forms of civic engagement. Joe recently married the love of his life, Katie. He and his family are committed to furthering the promise of life, liberty, and happiness as outlined by our founding fathers. Joe looks forward to serving the citizens of Ohio’s 9th District in the near future
