Can you see any similarities in the way a meal is cooked in your house?
Yes there are more than one person cooking the meal. They appear to be using a spatula and pan.

Where do you think the people get this source?Cutting down treesChemical energy being burned from the wood, chemical and heat. Why do you think they use this source?Because it’s cheap and it’s available to them What advantages can you think of to cooking with this source? It doesn’t cost as much What disadvantages can you think of to cooking with this source? It takes a longer time to heat up, it doesn’t have a consistent and well spread heat that will burn out.
What is the source of energy being used?

Fires need to be tended which
takes time Inhaling smoke and particulates
causes respiratory diseases It takes time to gather wood Contributes to deforestation

Can you think of another way
that people in Zambia could cook? What would you suggest? Talk to your team and list at least three ideas.
Stretch your thinking!

What are the advantages of
using this source of energy? What are the disadvanatges
of using this source of energy?
What is the energy source?

The construction of a solar oven is cheap and
easy Time doesn’t need to be spent gathering wood A solar oven doesn’t need to be tended which
means time can be freed up to do other things Solar ovens don’t create smoke they are
healthier Solar ovens do not contribute to deforestation

Kerosene is a combustible liquid
derived from petroleum. Kerosene lamps are commonly used to light homes in rural Zambia as electricity supplies are unreliable.
Can you think of any disadvantages to this source of energy?Smells really bad and pollutes. It doesn’t produce allot of light and does release allot of smoke.
The photos show homemade Kerosene
lamps

Kerosene is expensive It pollutes and is very smelly Doesn’t provide great light to do
homework, read etc. It’s a non-renewable source of
energy Can easily start a fire
Disadvanatges

Can you think of a better way that our Zambian friends could light
their homes?
