Sunday’s Reflection
“Go and do likewise.” Can there be a more simple
instruction from our Lord and Savior Jesus? With
these words, He closes the Parable of the Good
Samaritan, which is at the heart of our Gospel
reading for today. That parable was inspired by the
question, “Who is my neighbor?”
That parable may be the most familiar to people
of faith, and even to those who are not Christians,
for it represents what is expected of us as
followers of Christ, but it also presents an
expectation for every human person.
A simplified answer to the question, “Who is my
neighbor?” might be, “Your neighbor is anyone you
see or know who is in need.” It is much more than
the person who lives in your neighborhood, or
someone you may know at church or at the office.
Equally telling is the response the questioner gave
to Jesus when the Lord asked, after sharing the
parable, “Which was the neighbor to the robber‟s
victim?” to which the lawyer responded, “The one
who treated him with mercy.”
Is it any wonder that Pope Francis has declared
this a Year of Mercy? What he expects of us is
what Jesus expects from us. The Holy Father says,
“Let us become agents of Christ‟s mercy, channels
through which God can water the earth, protect all
creation, and make justice and peace flourish.” That
is a call to stewardship.
Pray For…
. . . the sick of our parish: Lindy Kness, Sunnie Moorman, Jessie Wodka,
Carolyn Bayer, William Leisher, Sr., Anna Mae
Woytowitz, Frank Kohut, John Robinson,
Gary Bowers, Al Kramer, and Victor Romley
. . . our beloved deceased:
“…‟Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?‟ He answered, „The one who treated him with mercy.‟ Jesus said to him, „Go and do likewise.‟”
--Luke 10: 25-37
Welcome… . . . to all visitors. Thank you for worshiping here at St. John the Evangelist parish.
J o i n U s i n W o r s h i p
We welcome the following members of our
growing parish family, who registered at St. John in
June: Brian & Laura Brooke, Melissa & Dave Daniel,
Christopher & Sally Dennison, Ryan & Desiree
Erdman, Bryan & Rachel Kail, and Robert & Tiffany
Jirsa.
Prayer for Vocations
God, may your grace encourage men and women
to heights of holiness through service to the church
as priests, sisters, brothers, and lay ministers.
Make me an instrument to encourage others to give
of themselves and challenge me to do the same.
Amen.
Our Daily Bread Report
We delivered 107 casseroles to Our Daily Bread
on July 4, and can see why ODB is so grateful to us
each month. While the casseroles were being
unloaded, we looked at some of the receipts from
other groups. Most were for about half the amount
of meals that we bring.
Please keep up the good work, and consider
making a casserole for our next delivery date of
Monday, August 8. ~ The Casserole Team
Anniversary Blessings
The Blessing for those married in the
month of July will take place next Sunday,
July 17, at 10:15 AM. Please contact the
parish office to register.

Baptism and Confirmation for Adults
Because of certain life circumstances or family
matters, a number of adults say “I desire to have a life of faith within the Church…I had parents who didn‟t get me baptized…my preparation for Confirmation was disrupted…what must I do to follow Jesus and to share faith with my children?” It sounds like the Holy Spirit of God
is nudging or inspiring such adults to
a deeper relationship with God and a
stronger commitment to practice
love, hope, and faith through all that
the Catholic Church has to offer.
Are you one of those adults? The
parish will provide details about the
sacraments. Just contact us!

and, typically, a reduction in offertory. Giving is
easy while you‟re away this summer with our Online
Giving option. There‟s a link on our website to sign

Light in the Forest
No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. - Matthew 5:15
I walk around a small lake for exercise, usually
about three laps. The lake is surrounded by dense
forest. The other day while walking along a
particularly dense area of the forest, I noticed that
the setting sun was filtering light through the
trees, creating stunning patches
of color. Different branches
were bursting with oranges,
reds, and golds. It was quite a
beautiful sight. But as I circled
around the lake again, the
colors were completely gone. In
that period of about 15
minutes, the forest had gone
completely dark. However, I
still had that vivid image of
color in my mind.
It occurred to me that our faith in God can be
like this experience. The scripture quoted above
came to mind. The light of God is always there. Yet
it sometimes seems dim or gone entirely in times of
struggle and pain. We might even be tempted to
ignore it when things go wrong, but the light of God
is always there, ready to burst with color and
energy and hope. Every time I walk by that
particular section of forest, I think of that amazing
light. Then I give thanks that, though sometimes
hard to see, God‟s light is always there.
~ Patricia M. Daniels (Florida, USA)
Thought for the Day: God‟s light is always shining.
Prayer: O God, thank you for your light that is
always shining, even when life seems hopeless. Amen.

GET INVOLVED AT ST. JOHN LITURGICAL MINISTRIES
Liturgy Committee The Liturgy Committee works in consultation with the Pastor and Pastoral Staff in the preparation and celebration of the liturgical seasons and sacraments. The committee also promotes the work and training of parishioners for liturgical ministries, and continues to implement the work of Vatican Council II. Contact: Chris Longhenry, 410-592-2330
Readers Effective proclaiming of the Word of God at the Liturgy is the responsibility of the person who serves as Reader. During the liturgy, parishioners not only hear the Scriptures but receive them just as those first Christians did. Anyone interested in this ministry will receive training in proper techniques and delivery. Anyone aged 14 or older is welcome. Contact: Deb Jenkins, 410-592-2493
Eucharistic Ministers Eucharistic Ministers are key laypersons within the Church. They assist the whole community in the Communion rite. Their primary obligation is to assist the priest in distributing Holy Communion. In our parish, they assist in this sacred duty at each weekend Mass and on other occasions as needed. Anyone aged 16 or older and confirmed is welcome to apply. Contact: Chris Longhenry, 410-592-2330
Ushers Our ushers serve the parish at Mass. Their ministry facilitates the collection, offertory procession, Eucharist and dismissal at the conclusion of Mass. Ushers serve by keeping good order in the Church, ensure the environment is satisfactory, and assist those with special needs. Anyone in high school or older is welcome to serve this ministry. Contact: Bob Torr, 410-592-2266
Altar Society The Altar Society of St. John's is a group from the parish who offer their dedicated service to the Church. They are involved in the life of the Church in a special way. They assist the Pastor in maintaining the Altar, Sanctuary and Sacristy. This includes cleaning and setting of the Altar for Services, caring for the vestments, Altar cloths, etc., and caring for the plants, flowers and decorations for special occasions. Contact: Deb Jenkins, 410-592-2493
Altar Servers It is a special privilege for a young person to serve at Mass. Parents should consider the serving of Mass as part of their child's religious education and encourage their youngsters to strive to attain this goal. Youths in grade 4 and older may participate in this very special ministry. Contact the parish office if you have a child that would be interested in participating in this ministry. Contact: Martha Schumacher, 410-592-6206
Children's Liturgy of the Word & KID CHURCH The mission of CLOW or Children’s Liturgy of the Word is to celebrate the Word of God, and to have children hear and relate to weekend readings in language suitable for them. CLOW is geared towards children aged 5 to 11. The Sunday Gospel is read, and discussion or an activity is conducted by an assigned presenter. The idea is to make the readings relative and memorable to the children and to enhance their worship experience. The children return to the assembly in the main church during the preparation of the gifts as, together, we celebrate the Eucharist around the table as one family of faith. Contact: Karen Schafer, 410-592-7955 During designated Mass times, KID CHURCH opens in the Parish Hall for children 4 years of age and under. Trained care-givers provide play and learning activities for infants and toddlers so that parents can fully participate in the Mass. Contact: Melanie Hecht, 410-663-9439
Greeter Ministry Greeters are prepared to welcome and assist all who arrive at the church doors for weekend Masses, thus sharing in the Christian mission of evangelization, worship, and service which, together, recognize each person as a sister or brother in Christ. Contact: Maria Bredehoeft, 410-592-2160
Prayer Ministry Qualified, trained parishioners serve as compassionate intercessors for Christ by praying after Masses with anyone with specific requests or needs. They witness to scripture’s call to pray for one another. Contact: Dr. Verna Carson, 410-336-5408
SOCIAL JUSTICE AND OUTREACH
Haiti Outreach With the beginning of the Archdiocesan Haiti Outreach Project, there came an opportunity for local parishes to enter into a specific relationship with a sister parish and to offer spiritual and material help. St. John’s has been involved with partner parishes to provide financial support, emergency hurricane relief, and subsidized education of the 1,000 school children in four schools, as well as providing a morning meal five times per week for all of these children. Contact: Jim Taneyhill, 410-533-6916
Prayer Network What would we do without prayer? This group is responsible for many answered prayers in the parish. Two parishioners keep track of all prayer requests and publish a weekly email to all volunteers who have committed to include these intentions in their prayers. Contact: Carol Calvert, 410-592-6696
Medical Supplies Ministry St. John's collects medical supplies that are available for loan. Items vary from wheelchairs to walkers to crutches, and are available on a first-come first-served basis. We accept any medical supplies that you no longer need, but are in excellent condition and could be used by someone else. Contact: Pat Loeffler, 410-877-7287
Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer Shawl Ministry is a dedicated group of parish women. Our ministry begins with prayers and blessings for the recipients of our knitted, crocheted, or sewn shawls, and lap quilts. Those who need to feel God's unconditional love and comfort in their lives are given the hand-made items during illness, major problems, or for the celebration of sacramental anointing. Contact: Carol Calvert, 410-592-6696 or Teresa Asplen, 410-252-6909
Bereavement Committee This loyal group of parishioners coordinates the luncheon gatherings that follow funerals at the parish. They set up and clean up, prepare food, and serve the refreshments to grieving families in the church hall. Contact: Pat Turnbaugh, 410-941-5336
Our Daily Bread Collection St. John's serves the needy of Baltimore by providing casseroles once a month. Our target is to collect 100 casseroles, and generally we achieve this goal. Recipes and pans are provided. All you have to do is shop, bake, freeze, and deliver it to the parish. Casseroles can be brought in at any time. Deliveries are made on the first Monday of each month. Contact: Kathye Hayes, 410-817-6511 or Jim Novotny, 410-592-3992
Lunch for the Homeless Twice per month, a faithful group of St. John's parishioners gathers to make sandwiches and fill lunch bags for the homeless of Harford County. They provide decorated bags with an encouraging message, and the "baggers" include an assortment of goodies and lots of love. We work in conjunction with a few other area churches and distribute the lunches where the homeless gather in area parks and shopping centers. Contact: Pat Loeffler, 410-877-7287
Respect Life Committee God sends each and every person into this world as a gift. All human life has value and should be respected from the moment of conception to natural death. With Christ as our center, we are committed to uphold this beautiful truth at the parish level and within our community. This aim includes coordinating educational efforts, attending marches and demonstrations, assuring prayer for all life issues, supporting crisis pregnancy centers, and informing parishioners how we can assist through legislative or any other action. We work with the Long Green Valley Knights of Columbus and Archdiocese Respect Life Committee. Contact: Nancy Burke, 443-604-5505
