Does our Meeting's ministry of outreach lead Friends to share their spiritual experiences with others? What are we doing to invite persons not in membership to attend our meetings for worship and to encourage their continued attendance? How does the Meeting welcome visitors? Are we sensitive to the needs and hesitations of each visitor? Are we tender to the needs of isolated Friends and Meetings, and to nearby Meetings seeking support? Does my manner of life as a Friend attract others to our religious society? Do I seize opportunities to tell others about the Religious Society of Friends and invite them to worship with us? Is my manner with visitors and attenders to our Meeting one of welcome? Collaboration In what ways does our Meeting respond to opportunities to join with other faiths in worship, in social action, and in spiritual dialogue? How does our Meeting encourage its members to seek opportunities to meet and work with Friends world wide? What opportunities have I taken to know people from different religious and cultural backgrounds, to worship with them, and to work with them on common concerns? What opportunities have I taken to know, to work, and to worship with Friends outside of my own Meeting?

The ninth program presented to celebrate our 300th anniversary year will be held: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 12:00 - All are welcome to bring a covered dish/fresh harvest from your garden to share.1:30 – Presentation will begin.

Adrian Martinez“When Two Worlds Meet: Quakers and Indians in Pennsylvania 1700-1770”This picture and story-telling presentation is the subject of his research and related paintings at the McKinney Gallery at West Chester University.Adrian Martinez is an internationally known professional artist whose work combines a rigorously classical technique with an intensely emotional vision. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, but grew up in Washington, D.C. He

studied painting and printmaking and received degrees from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Maryland (BFA), St. Martins School of Art in London, England (CS) and Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana (MA). Adrian’s work is in public and private collections all over the United States and Europe. President George W. and Mrs. Laura Bush commissioned him to paint two large landscapes commemorating the National Parks theme for the White House holiday season in 2007 which are now installed in the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Adrian designed the White House Holiday Card for President and Mrs. Laura Bush in 2001. News From the Religious Education Committee

The Committee is energetically preparing for First Day School to resume, for children and adults, on Sunday, September 7. In August, 15 families were surveyed via email about their preferences for London Grove’s children’s religious education program. Results of the survey are guiding our planning for the coming year. One suggestion was to provide a calendar of what will be offered to the children each week. We plan to have such a calendar available for both children’s and adult programs.

With the intention of involving more Meeting adults in the children’s program, a member of the RE Committee will be inviting selected Friends to serve a month-long term as greeter at the door to the First Day School area at 9:30 a.m. “Getting to know you” is an aim of several initiatives the committee hopes to begin in the fall. Families are being asked to email a photo of each of their First Day Scholars for a picture album of each age group of children. Present plans call for grouping children ages 3-7 and 8-11 in separate classes on some weeks. The groups will meet together for monthly “Yoga Calm” activities and on some other occasions. Intergenerational programs are also anticipated at holiday times and when there is a fifth Sunday in a month.

In cooperation with Western Quarterly Meeting, “Convergent First Day School” will be hosted by West Grove Friends Meeting in November and by London Grove in January or February 2015. The plan is for children from all Meetings in the Quarter to converge on the host meeting, to experience each other’s First Day School environments and activities. Obviously, families will be alerted to this opportunity for possible carpooling.

The RE Committee recognizes that activities for teens only arise when the teens themselves want to be together. Friendly Adult Presence is essential, but not sufficient, for such gatherings to succeed. We believe there is more the Meeting can do to encourage teens to share and explore what it means to be “raised Quaker” -- helping each other to overcome the sense of “peculiarity” among peers from other religious (or non-religious) traditions. Can we do better by our Young Friends and their families? Where should we start?

The RE Committee is exploring the idea of a Meeting Conversation about First Day School...

Adult First Day School will continue the traditional pattern of Opening Exercises, following the rise of Meeting for Worship. Donald LaBranche and Mark Myers will lead discussions on Bible Study and Quaker Topics, respectively. Special topics will also be featured. Meeting committees (and perhaps individuals following a leading) are invited to propose a class or series of classes.

Clerk’s Summary of Eighth Month, Third Day Meeting for Business

While continuing worship on the third day of the eighth month, the following business was conducted with Karen-Lee Brofee serving as clerk, Bob Frye as Assistant Clerk, and Rebecca Matos as Recording Clerk.

MINUTES: Seventh Month Minutes were read and approved with corrections.

THE PEACE QUERY: Continuing our attention to the 8th Month’s Query on peace, two reports were offered. The first, a report on the Friends General Conference Gathering, “Let Love Be the First Motion,” given enthusiastically by Brenda Macalusco and Sam Cypressi, was received with appreciation. David Watkins presented a report from the Peace and Social Justice Committee on the 2014 Helen Corson Peace Awards. He shared several letters of thanks from the receiving students. The Committee’s desire to increase the amount of $300 scholarships next year was suggested but not acted upon at this time.

STANDING REPORTS: The Treasurer’s Report, prepared by Treasurer Doug Myers, showed a closing balance of $67,702.50 was cited with major expenses including 3 months of lawn care, repairs, and overhead. The report was ACCEPTED. We are 58% through the year and have received 44% of the budgeted contributions. The Recorder’s Report, presented by Betsy Walker, noted the addition of Stacey Farrell as a member. The 300th Anniversary Committee’s Report began with a Minute prepared by Rebecca Mitchell documenting the previous month’s 300th Anniversary activity of the Western Quarter Meetinghouse Tours. The minute was APPROVED with extensive appreciation. Clerk Karen-Lee Brofee read a Minute of Appreciation written to the 300th Anniversary Committee and the Meetinghouse Tour Subcommittee. The minute was APPROVED and presented to Sandy Reber, Clerk of the 300th Anniversary Committee. Sandy Reber gave a 300th Anniversary Committee Report, citing the critical needs for a successful October Celebration. An email will be sent listing these needs.

ANNUAL REPORTS: Nominating Committee clerk Sam Cypressi presented the Committee’s proposed Officers and Committee Members for 2014-2015, with the term beginning in October. A full list of all committee members was distributed with the names of persons newly assigned to the committees read aloud. One correction was suggested and Meeting attenders and members were asked to consider the proposed committees over the next month. Approval will be sought during September’s business. Peggy Sue Fernandes presented the Kindergarten Committee’s Report, noting the success of the Summer Camp Program, the enrollment thus far for the coming year (there are still openings), and the coming

project of the Bicycle Shed. Peggy Sue has been transferred and is moving with her family to Maryland shortly, forcing her resignation as Kindergarten Committee clerk. The task will fall into the able hands of Karen Conlan. Nonetheless, Peggy Sue will be missed; she has been a huge asset to our Kindergarten and Meeting. The Kindergarten Report was ACCEPTED with appreciation.

CARE AND MEMBERSHIP RECOMMENDATION: Denis Newbold, standing in for Clerk Jill Benjamin, brought forth the request for membership recently received from active attenders Bill and Grace Pfeifer. Denis read the Pfeifers’ letter, reported on the clearness meeting with Bill and Grace, and brought forth Care and Membership’s recommendation for approval. Meeting APPROVED heartily.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CLERK’S REPORT: Brenda Macalusco deferred her report on the PYM Indian Committee, but announced an upcoming walk. The clerk shared an email of appreciation from Diane Cook and Len Jenshel, the photographers who are producing a feature story for National Geographic Magazine on “Wise Trees, ” of which our oak is one. We can expect to receive one or more of their photographs. The clerk brought the “Quakers the Quiet Revolutionaries” documentary-in-the-making before the meeting. This was highlighted at the FGC Gathering and is a continuing project seeking donations. The site for the film’s trailer may be found by searching for “Quakers” at the site www.kickstarter.com.

With the business completed, Meeting closed in silent worship. Summarized by Karen-Lee Brofee, Clerk

Approved Minute of Approval for the 300TH Anniversary Committee and Special Committee for the Western Quarter Meetinghouse Tour

As members and attenders of London Grove Monthly Meeting we stand in grateful appreciation for the extensive and dedicated work of the 300th Anniversary Committee. We have enjoyed inspiring programs each month this year that have given us time to think deeply about Quakerism, to marvel at that of God in the arts and nature, and to welcome the larger community to London Grove Monthly Meeting. We offer special thanks to the committee: Sandy Reber, Jack Yeatman, Ruth Thompson, Philip Gilbert, Jane Brosius, Elizabeth Powell, Heather Hayes, Wyatt Thompson, Ed Paschall, Barbara Walker, Barb Pusey. Georgia Delaney, and Sam Cypressi.

This month our breath was taken away by the incredible organization and coordination of the opening of the 11 active Western Quarter Quaker Meetings and 8 historic Meetinghouses by the 300th Anniversary special committee for the July weekend “Quaker Meetinghouses of Western Quarter Tour.” From the carefully laid routes for travel, the interesting and well prepared literature at all locations, to the Friends at each stop eager to share their Meeting’s special history, the two days were a treasure. We know this flawless experience took an enormous amount of work, endless perseverance, and overflowing love. This heartfelt minute of thanks extends to Ruth Thompson, Mary Jo Ciganek, Rebecca Mitchell, Mary Sproat, Pat Horrocks, and Mary Dugan. You did extraordinary work and touched hundreds of people.
