b | One Loma Linda | 2018 Homecoming

Dear Alumni, Staff and Friends,

I am elated you are here for our second annual One Loma Linda Homecoming! We so enjoyed our time together last year and I am thrilled to see this dream becoming a tradition.

We have a very special schedule for Homecoming this year. Beginning on Thursday, you will find numerous continuing education opportunities. Friday, you will be able to take a construction tour to see the progress on the new hospital towers, and then Friday evening we have an exceptional vespers planned, featuring stories of unsung heroes, in the Loma Linda University Church. On Sabbath morning, join us in the Drayson Center for a parade of nations, a sermon from Pastor Randy Roberts and a haystack lunch in the big tent. The Mission Vespers at 4 p.m. will feature global and mission service through personal stories. The evening promises to be amazing as the Homecoming Concert will feature alumni and student talent, culminating with a special performance by Kevin K.O. Olusola from Pentatonix. The weekend will end with a 5k run, a pickleball tournament and a pancake feed.

Let us share in fellowship that spans generations, disciplines, cultures and faiths. Together we are stronger; together we advance the future of health care. My hope is you will enjoy the events we have planned for our second annual One Loma Linda Homecoming and you will leave refreshed from gathering with your Loma Linda University family.

Enjoy the weekend. Enjoy your time back In This Very Place.

Cordially,

Richard Hart, MD, DrPHPresidentLoma Linda University Health

4 | One Loma Linda | 2018 Homecoming

Continuing EducationYou will find numerous opportunities to obtain continuing education credits. Thursday, March 1, is a full day of interdisciplinary topics. For sessions specific to your degree or school, please check the school section.

International Congress on Vegetarian NutritionThe 7th International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition (7ICVN) will be held on the campus of Loma Linda University in Southern California, from February 26 to 28, 2018. Since 1987, the congress has been held only every five years and is the premier scientific conference on the health effects of plant-based diets. It brings together international scientists, physicians, nutritionists, dietitians and other health professionals to showcase the latest advances from basic science, epidemiology and clinical trials in vegetarian nutrition. The theme for the 7th Congress is Plant-foods for the Health of People, Populations and the Planet. The format of the congress includes plenary lectures, panel discussions and oral and poster abstract presentations.

Hospital Construction ToursOn Friday, March 2, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., join tour guides as they take you to an overlook where you can view the current construction and provide updated information on Vision 2020.

Meet at the Centennial Complex for a shuttle to the site. Shuttles run every 30 minutes (two tours at a time).

Spiritual ProgrammingSteeped in Loma Linda University Health’s rich history is the mission to continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Our spiritual programming for the weekend will focus on this mission. Plan now to attend these special opportunities — these reminders of why we do what we do every day.

Friday evening, join us for vespers in the Loma Linda University Church. Starting at 7 p.m., with an organ concert by Kimo Smith, followed by amazing stories of Unsung Alumni Heroes featuring – Yoshinobu Namihira, MD, FACG, “The Doctor on Crutches”, Dilip Joseph, MD, MPH, “Taken By The Taliban: A Doctor’s Story Of Captivity and Rescue”, and Mary Ann and Sophia Wells “Courage to Care.” Special people who have changed lives and communities close to home and around the world.

Sabbath, March 3, begins with a prayer walk. Together, we will have an opportunity to reflect on our history and pray for the future of our campus, our students and the lives of those we serve every day. Our Sabbath services will take place in the Drayson Center. Starting with the Parade of Nations ceremony, you will be reminded of the courage of our alumni and moved by the commitment of current students to go into the world and live our mission. You will also enjoy great music from the LLU church orchestra and a sermon by Randy Roberts.

Following afternoon reunions, please join us once more at the University Church for the annual mission vespers.

Homecoming HaystacksIf you missed this last year, you’re going to want to be part of the biggest haystack feed ever! Last year we fed 1,600 people in 30 minutes! So, now, imagine tables laden with corn chips, mounds of lettuce, buckets of beans, stacks of cheese, piles of olives, bowls of salsa, sour cream, ranch dressing, guacamole and more!

Best of all? You can layer your ingredients in the proper order (everyone has their own idea of what that might be). Join us for the food – stay for the fellowship and fun!

Maximizing Your Dental Practice Value with Data Mining Methods: A Hands-on Introduction

This program will examine the what, why and how of process mining a powerful data analytical that scans digital records to identify helpful and detrimental processes. This empowers a practitioner with information that can greatly improve day-to-day decisions.

Process mining is important to clinicians where derived metrics can be used to evaluate how well the work is done. Typically, evaluations rely on reported patient satisfaction and financial measures. When warning signs appear, though, decision-makers want more detail. Process mining provides visibility about what has been working well, while highlighting undesired and unintended issues. Process mining can be used to understand clinic flow, identify financial losses and inform decisions about practice performance.

#UN

IV-040-18/0218/3000

Although Loma Linda University does not anticipate any security problems during homecoming, we take special measures to ensure the safety of students, faculty and guests at our events.

• All guests may be subject to a security check.

• Attendees are highly encouraged to leave large bags, purses, backpacks or boxes at home or locked securely in the vehicle.

You can do your part by noting the following:

• Once you are seated, locate the nearest exit to your seat.

• Listen carefully and follow instructions, which may be issued by the event coordinators or security officers.

• Parents should keep their children with them at all times.

• Pay particular attention to the safety of any elderly persons or persons with disabilities.

• If directed to evacuate the area, please move away and remain until you have been given an “all-clear” by authorities.

• If necessary, seek assistance from a security officer or event staff nearby.

In Case of a Medical Emergency

DIAL 911 or 909-558-4320 from a campus phone or activate an emergency blue phone post located in parking lots.

• Give campus security your exact location, (e.g., building, room number, parking lot, etc. and telephone number where you can be reached).

• Briefly describe the medical condition of victim and if possible obtain victim’s name.

• Return to the injured party. Do not move a seriously injured person unless it is a lifesaving situation.

• If possible have someone meet campus security or emergency medical personnel at the parking lot or building entrance.

Safety Tips

Most crimes are ones of opportunity. Do not leave your valuables in plain sight or leave your vehicle running unattended. Purses, backpacks and other valuables should be secured out of sight and locks engaged to ensure optimal protection of your personal belongings. Remember, thieves look for easy targets.

• Remove property from plain sight.

• Roll up windows.

• Remove keys.

• Lock all doors.

• Report suspicious and unusual activity to LLUH Security.

• When in doubt, DIAL 911 or 909-558-4320.
