Amphiboly 1.A fallacy in which a loose or awkward combination of words can be interpreted more than one way; the argument contains a premise based on one interpretation while the conclusion relies on a different interpretation. 2.An amphiboly occurs when the construction of a sentence allows it to have two different meanings. 3.When it is stated as a premise with the interpretation that makes it true, and a conclusion is drawn from on the interpretation that makes it false, then the fallacy of amphiboly has been committed. Quick example: Last night I shot a burglar in my pyjamas. This could either mean that I shot a burglar while wearing my pyjamas or I shot a burglar which was inside my pyjamas. Example 1: In an opinion from the Phil. Inquirer entitled “P-Noy resorting to demagoguery?” by Solita Collas Monsod, the author compared the Philippine impeachment proceedings with the the US impeachment experience of Clinton, thus: What a difference from the impeachment trial of US President Clinton (Jan. 7, 1999-Feb. 12, 1999) where the US Senate decided to give the prosecution and defense three days each to make their case with both sides required to limit their arguments to evidence already in the record (or be ruled out of order). Plus, the senators asked their questions only in writing, the questions all to be propounded and answered during the allotted time.

Amphiboly

1. A fallacy in which a loose or awkward combination of words can be interpreted more than one way; the argument contains a premise based on one interpretation while the conclusion relies on a different interpretation.

2. An amphiboly occurs when the construction of a sentence allows it to have two different meanings.3. When it is stated as a premise with the interpretation that makes it true, and a conclusion is drawn from on the

interpretation that makes it false, then the fallacy of amphiboly has been committed.

Quick example: Last night I shot a burglar in my pyjamas. This could either mean that I shot a burglar while wearing my pyjamas or I shot a burglar which was inside my pyjamas.

Example 1: In an opinion from the Phil. Inquirer entitled “P-Noy resorting to demagoguery?” by Solita Collas Monsod, the author compared the Philippine impeachment proceedings with the the US impeachment experience of Clinton, thus:

What a difference from the impeachment trial of US President Clinton (Jan. Also, witnesses were deposed (videotaped) rather than required to appear at trial.

The idea behind all this, said Washington Post analyst at the time, was that the senators would act more like jurors executing impartial justice rather than political speechmakers.

And that is exactly what happened.

The last sentence begs of two conclusions.

1st interpretation: The Senators of Philippine impeachment proceedings are like jurors executing impartial justice.

2nd interpretation: The Senators of Philippine impeachment proceedings are like political speechmakers.

1st interpretation: Rachael Ray finds inspiration in cooking from her family and dog.

2nd interpretation: Rachael Ray finds inspiration by cooking her family and dog.

Example 3: 1st interpretation: The church wants to help you with your worries

2nd interpretation: The church wants to help kill you.
