LOCKHART HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
ATHLETIC POLICIES
Athletes are expected to follow all guidelines set by the Lockhart ISD Student Code of Conduct
and the Lockhart Extracurricular Student Code of Conduct.
1. DRUGS, ALCOHOL, AND SMOKING will not be tolerated. The Lockhart
Extracurricular Code of Conduct will be enforced first and extra sanction can be made at the
discretion of the coaching staff.
2. PROFANITY- will not be tolerated. First offense will result in disciplinary action.
3. STEALING – Taking things that do no belong to you will not be tolerated. A runner caught
and proven guilty will result in disciplinary action by your coach.
4. CONDUCT – If you want to be a member of any athletic team you must
follow all school rules and procedures while attending class. You are expected to act
properly in class, giving your teachers and staff courtesy and respect. Any assignment to ISS
or suspension from school for any reason will result in disciplinary action by your coach.
5. ATTENDANCE – Do not cut classes or be tardy. Do not miss an athletic period, unless it
is absolutely necessary. If you must be absent please call and talk to a coach before your
athletic period. If you miss an athletic period or practice you will be required to make up all
work you missed. If you miss a workout the day before a game, you may not be allowed to
run Varsity and the coach will determine this. The Head Coach can approve extenuating
circumstances. Excessive absences will result in meet suspension(s) or possible termination
from team. Absences from meets will result in meet suspensions or termination from team
(the coaching staff will determine this). Regular attendance to practice and meets is very
important in order for the team to improve. Everyone is expected to come to practice and
stay until all work is done.
6. INJURY OR ILLNESS – If you have an injury, see one of the trainers. They will either treat
you or refer you to a physician. If you are going to miss a practice or a game because of injury
or an illness, we must have a note from a trainer or a doctor. If you are unable to physically
participate, you will still be expected to dress out and accompany your team unless given
special permission from your coach.
7. RESPECT FOR COACHES – Coaches should receive “yes ma’am,”
“no ma’am,” “yes sir”and“no sir” responses from athletes when talking to them. Runners in
return will be treated with respect by their coaches.
8. EQUIPMENT – You are responsible for all equipment checked out to you.
If you lose any item you will have to replace it. Do not lend your clothes to anyone. You are
responsible for taking care of your locker area. We are not responsible for any items that are
lost in the locker room. Be sure to lock your locker or take your valuables with you. Your
practice clothes are to be worn to practice everyday.
9. JEWELRY – Jewelry is not allowed to be worn during a sporting event;
therefore, it will not be allowed to be worn during practice.
6
10. If a runner quits or is dismissed from the team in or out of season, that
runner gives up all rights to any honors, which they have earned but not yet received. The
runner can only join the team the next year with permission of the head coach.
11. LETTERING – To letter on the varsity level, a runner MUST RUN A MINIMUM OF 1,500
MILES and competed in 20 races. Two (2) points are earned for every 50 miles run and 1
point for every race completed. When a total of the two equals 50, a letter jacket will be
awarded.
12. Parents need to provide transportation for their runners as soon as practice ends.
It is not the responsibility of the coaches to provide transportation.
13. CONFERENCES - Coaches will be available to meet with parents during their scheduled
conference periods. We will not talk to parents after meets but we will be glad to schedule
an appointment after the athlete has had a conference with the coach. Athletes need to talk
to coaches about problems before parents do.
14. TRAVEL POLICY - All athletes travel and return with the team unless the
parent signs the athlete out with their coach and travels with the parent. Parents cannot take
other runners home. Athletes are encouraged to ride with the team.
15. HAZING – There will be no initiation of hazing of any cross country runner.
Runners are encouraged to support each other and also report any incidents of
hazing to the coaches.
16. ACADEMICS – Academics is of primary importance in the running program at Lockhart
High School. The coaching staff expects good grades. Runners should make up any missed
work in a timely manner. Coaches should be informed of any athlete having trouble in a class.
The coaching staff will be happy to help set up any tutorial time for athletes.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING YOUR ABILITY AS A
LOCKHART HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER
1. Are you coachable? Can you listen, and are you willing to learn from the instruction
which you are given, or will you insist upon doing things your way?
2. Commitment – Are you committed to team work or individualism?
3. Loyalty - Do you support your fellow runners?
4. Work Ethic - Do you do extra work outside of practice to further your
own skill to help the team.
5. Responsibility – Are you always on time, bringing all your equipment
everyday?
7
6. Can you accept criticism? Coaches will, from time to time, be critical
of your actions on the course. If you can accept criticism, you should be motivated to
correct errors which you have been making. Criticism is never anything personal against
you; on the contrary, it’s a coach that cares enough about you to make you better.
7. Relationship with teammates – Do your teammates respect you as an
individual and as a team member? Do you do the things that will earn respect?
8. Are you a team player? Do your actions on the course show that you are more
concerned with the welfare of the team than in gaining individual glory? In a team sport,
honors may be won by individuals, but they are earned by the entire team.
9. Are you disciplined? The greatest runner is a disciplined individual,
both on and off the course.
MEET DAYS – RUNNERS NEED TO:
1. Bring all equipment to school on day of a meet.
2. Be at school at designated time set by coach. Do not be late; when you arrive at the
gym or track it is time to get serious and concentrate on the meet. No horseplay will be
tolerated.
3. Give 100% in pre-meet warm-ups, because you cannot run better than you train.
4. All runners should watch and support each other. This is the perfect
time to learn and be attentive to the other teams.
5. Meets – double check and make sure you have everything you need for the trip. Be on
the bus at the designated time to leave. We will not wait for you. The bus will be kept
clean during the trip and the driver treated with respect. Do not eat junk food. There
will be no talking on the bus. Music devices should have earphones. Runners will wear
Lockhart clothing on all trips. All runners, managers and trainers are required to ride to
and from the meets on the bus.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A LOCKHART RUNNER
My responsibilities as a Lockhart High School Cross Country runner are:
To attend all classes and excel to the best of my personal ability;
To fulfill my team role the best I can;
To attend all practices and be on time;
To give 100% in practices and meets;
To look for ways to compliment my team members, on and off the course;
To create a positive attitude;
To be honest, sensitive and don’t steal or cheat.
To represent LHS as a courteous, disciplined champion athlete;
To run to my potential;
To do what the coaches ask of me; and
To develop a positive self-image.
8
The following 14 traits are directly related to success in any competitive sports
and life:
1. Coachability
2. Commitment
3. Loyalty
4. Work Ethic
5. Responsibility
6. Emotional Control
7. Consciousness
8. Mental Toughness
9. Trust
10. Leadership
11. Determination
12. Drive
13. Aggressiveness
14. Self-Confidence
Remember this quote from John Wooden on Success:
“Success is a peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your
best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”
PARENT’S 10 COMMANDMENTS
1. Be positive with your child. Let him/her know s/he is accomplishing by simply being part of
her team – don’t put him/her down!
2. Encourage your runner to work hard and do his/her best. Don’t offer excuses if s/he is not
performing well.
3. Be loyal to the program and to the coaches. The coach represents the boss- authority – parent
– teacher- etc. If parents constantly put down the coach, how can we expect your
son/daughter to play for them?
4. Insist that your child follow TEAM RULES! No matter which division your child is on,
runners must follow the rules! Athletics is very demanding and coaches are concerned with a
runner’s activities. In order to get the maximum physical and mental performance, your
child needs to follow team rules!
5. Insist on good GRADES! Monitor your runner’s homework. It is a parent’s duty to see that
homework gets done. Bring him/her to tutorials, if necessary. Tutors are available in all
subjects.
6. Be Positive toward ALL other runners in the program. Please do not carry bad feelings
toward runners because of incidents that may have occurred between runners. Every runner
has an important role on the team and all roles contribute to the entire team.
9
7. Be a Good Fan at the Meets! As a fan, you are entitled to yell your head off, if you want.
We want to remain positive toward the opponent, all coaches and all runners!
8. Insist that you runner develop self-control! Self respect begins with self-control.
9. Refrain from comparing your runner with previous children who have played sports, or with
other runners on her team.
10. Have your runner see coach if there is a problem. Almost all concerns can be handled at this
step. Coaches are here because they love coaching and love working with your children.
11. Finally, ENJOY YOUR RUNNER!!
CODE OF ETHICS
I have been selected to represent the Lockhart High School Running Program. I therefore
agree to conduct myself to the following code of ethical behavior and abide by all the
guidelines set forth within this booklet. I also realize that in case I do not live up to the
agreement that I can be removed from any team.
1. Follow all training rules and train myself to be physically and mentally alert to the best of my
ability.
2. Be sincere and loyal at all times to my coaches, my teachers, and school.
3. Respect and cooperate with all my coaches.
4. Work hard and strive for improvement.
5. Put my team success ahead of individual glory.
6. Maintain good sportsmanship.
7. Be responsible for all athletic equipment trusted to my use and return it to the school in the
best possible condition.
8. Make opponents respect us, not hate us.
9. Set an example in school, in my classes, at home, and on the court so others will look up to
me, and respect me so that I will add something positive to the girls’ athletic program.
10. Remember winners never quit and quitters never win.
11. Never look back and say I wish I had worked harder. Chances are if you do you didn’t.
This code of ethics has been written with the purpose of allowing me the privilege and honor of
being part of the Lockhart High School Running Program.
10
TRAINING ROOM RULES
1. If you are not injured, STAY OUT!!!
2. Shoes are not allowed in the training room.
3. Shower after practice before seeing the trainers and wear a shirt and shorts.
4. All equipment must stay outside of the training room and go to practice.
5. After you have been treated or taped, leave the training room and go to practice.
6. Show respect, to receive respect.
7. If you are waiting to be taped or have an injury evaluated and the trainers are with another
athlete please form a line outside the door in the hallway.
8. If you are not working out and you are coming to the training room, you are expected to wear
workout clothes rather than street clothes.
9. If you need help from the trainers due to injury, the training room opens up at 7:15 AM.
TRAINING ROOM ORDER OF PRIORITY
The following is a rough approximation of how the training room staff will prioritize the treatment
and evaluation of all athletes, of course typically first come, first serve will be the precedence.
1. Any life-threatening injury/illness.
2. An on-field/court evaluation in which an athlete cannot leave the playing surface.
3. Tape an in-season athlete who is able to fully participate.
4. Tape an out-of-season athlete who is able to fully participate.
5. Treatment to an in-season athlete who is able to partially participate.
6. Treatment to an out-of-season athlete who is able to partially participate.
7. Treatment to any athlete who is unable to participate in athletics.
INJURIES
We must distinguish between pain and injury. Athletic participation will lead to occasional pain
and discomfort due to the nature of your chosen sport. An athlete who is injured and cannot
practice will be under the direction of the Athletic Trainers, and will advise the coaches of the
status of the individual.
It is the responsibility of the athlete to make the trainers aware of any injury or illness that will
limit your ability to participate. If the condition has been evaluated by a doctor, a written note
from that doctor will be required. The trainers cannot treat an injury that has been evaluated by a
11
doctor’s written orders – appropriate forms are available to facilitate this communication upon
request.
The athlete’s name will be placed on an Injury Report that is given to the coaches if they are
suffering from any injury, illness, or other condition. It is expected that the athlete will participate
to their fullest ability under the advisement of the trainer(s) regardless of the injury or condition,
and will seek full clearance prior to attempting more activity that what is indicated on the Injury
Report.
If the injury occurred during athletic participation the trainers must be notified. AT THE TIME
OF INJURY or no later than forty-eight (48) hours after, notification can be made by calling the
trainers at 398-0358. Failure to notify the trainers may result in denial of district insurance
coverage, and most importantly, greater risk of injury exacerbation and/or improper care. Out of
town participation or holidays does not exempt an athlete of this time limitation.
If at any time during a practice or game, you feel that you are injured, over-heated or ill notify a
trainer, coach or student trainer immediately! Nobody but you can perceive your pain or illness.
If you are injured, the following expectations are required of you:
1. Report to the trainers daily and follow their instructions to the letter.
2. Attend treatments at the time the Trainer designates.
3. Attend MORNING TREATMENTS from 7:15AM – 7:50AM.
4. Attend all meetings for your sport.
5. Seek advice/evaluation no matter how small the injury may be.
6. Wear the appropriate uniform, even when not participating.
