Chennai (UNI) S.Nalini, one of the seven life con- victs in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has threatened to end her life in the high security Special Prison for Women in Vellore on Monday night, even as her counsel decided to move the court seeking to shift her to Puzhal prison citing her safety. Confirming this, her counsel P Pugazhendhi told UNI that following a complaint from her fellow life con- vict, who was posted as orderly for Nalini, the Jailor when to the cell to enquire into it, when the incident took place. The orderly has lodged a com- plaint about Nalini with the jailor who, after the 1800 hrs lock up time, went to her cell at around 2030 hrs to enquire into it. At that time there seems to be some misunderstanding between Nalini and the Jailor when she tried to end her life by tying her saree around her neck. However, it was thwarted by the jail authorities, Mr Pugazhendi said. ‘This is the jail version. I don’t think so that Nalini, who had been in prison for 29 years with good con- duct, would have made such an at- tempt over a trivial issue like this. Rajiv case life convict Nalini threatens to end life in prison Srinagar (UNI) Putting at rest all speculations sur- rounding the annual pilgrimage to holy Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) on Tuesday decided to cancel the pilgrimage due to COVID- 19 pandemic, official sources said. They said that the SASB took this decision at a meeting here this evening chaired by Lt Governor GC Murmu, who is also chairman of the shrine board. However, all traditional rituals as- sociated with the pilgrimage will be performed as per age-old traditions. The “Chhari Mubarak”, the holy sil- ver Mace of Lord Shiva, will be taken to the holy cave on August 3 where puja will be held by Mahant Deepen- dra Giri, custodian of the holy mace. Giving details, an official spokesperson said that Lieutenant Governor presided over 39th board meeting of the shrine board on Tues- day in which the members partici- pated virtually through video confer- ence to discuss the conduct of the Yatra 2020. “The board discussed the Supreme Court order dated July 13, 2020 in which, the decision to con- duct the Yatra was left to the Admin- istration/Government after assess- ing the ground realities prevailing in Jammu & Kashmir,” he said. He said the Board was informed that the arrangements were on track since February 2020. Annual Amarnath yatra cancelled Rajasthan political crisis Jaipur (UNI) The Rajasthan High Court on Tues- day reserved the verdict on Congress rebels’ plea against disqualification for July 24, while asking the Speaker not to take any action till that time. Earlier, the divisional bench of Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty and Justice Prakash Gupta had asked Speaker C P Joshi to wait till July 21, before coming to any decision. Former Deputy Chief Ministerof Rajasthan Sachin Pilot and 18 other MLAs had knocked the doors of the High Court with a writ petition, after they received a notice from the Speaker individually over disqualifi- cation. The notice was served under the Anti-Defection law, mentioned in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitu- tion. The law prevents political defec- tions, prompted by the lure of office, material bene- fits or similar considerations. It ensures that a party member does not violate the mandate and in case he does so, he will lose his mem- bership of the House. Interesting- ly, the notice was issued just hours after the rebels skipped the Congress Legislature Meeting in Jaipur and re- mained cemented in ITC Hotel at Manesar. In the courtroom, noted Advocate Harish Salve and former Attorney General of India Mukul Rohatgi, ap- pearing for the petitioner, contended that if the Speaker acts against any- one raising voice against the party’s chief, it means curbing the rights of the dissidents. Harish Dubey, GwaliorThe Congress is now trying to

save the remaining ten MLAs ofGwalior-Chambal division fromthe BJP’s charm.

The news of KP Singh, a seniorMLA from Pichhor and a ministerin Digvijaya government, meet-ing Dr. Narottam Mishra at hisbungalow has shocked the Con-gress. A day ago, Dr. Govind Singhhas also said that he has also re-ceived temptations and offersfrom the BJP. Amidst these re-ports, the name of BhitarwarMLA Lakhan Singh Yadav has alsocome up for discussion, but onNavbharat’s question, LakhanSingh has said that he has neithergot any temptation from BJP norany offer.

After the wholesale migrationof pro-Scindia MLAs to the BJP,only one Congress MLA is left inShivpuri, Bhind, Morena, Datia,Sheopur and Ashoknagar dis-tricts. There are definitely twoCongress MLAs in Gwalior andGuna. While both Congress MLAsare from Digvijaya’s family in Gu-na, both Gwalior MLAs LakhanSingh and Praveen Pathak arefrom Digvijaya and Pachauricamp respectively.

Congress’s worries were fur-ther heightened when Coopera-tion Minister Arvind Bhadauria, who played a big role in the Ben-galuru episode of pro-ScindiaMLAs, said in Gwalior last daythat after 22 MLAs, many moreMLAs can come to BJP. After this, the Congress has increased thevigil on all ten of its MLAs. State

spokesman KK Mishra, who isconsidered trusted by KamalNath, is camping in Gwalior andnow he will return to Bhopal onlyafter the by-poll. From every ac-tivity of Congress legislators, every latest update, they are mak-ing Kamal Nath aware.

There is a discussion withinthe BJP that weak links of theCongress have been found. Afterthe initial rough work, the BJPstrategists are now trying to give asolid face to the possibilities. OnJuly 26, the programme ofScindia’s stay in Gwalior wasmade, there was a plan to makeseveral big Congressmen includ-ing some MLAs to BJP member-ship in Gwalior by making a bigfunction, but this programme hasbeen postponed due to grief inthe family of Union MinisterNarendra Singh Tomar. . FromSheopur MLA Babu Jandel Singhto Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh ofDatia, BJP’s action planners areworking on every possibility.

It is said that the BJP camp wasactivated after Dr. Govind Singh’sname first emerged with Jorshorefor the post of Leader of Opposi-tion and then retained KamalNath, it was believed that Dr.Govind Singh was angry but No

changes have been seen so far inDr. Govind Singh’s allegiance tohis party. KP Singh and Ghan-shyam Singh are Congress MLAswho, despite having very seniori-ty, were not made ministers in theKamal Nath government, eventhough many junior MLAs weremade ministers. BJP’s strategistshave explored possibilities on thisaspect as well.

No entertainment pro-grammes will be organized in thestate during the state mourningperiod. Instructions are being sentto all districts in this regard. ChiefMinister Shri Chouhan said that heis going to Lucknow to pay homageto Late Shri Tandon on behalf ofthe people of Madhya Pradesh. The entire Cabinet observed two-minute silence to pay tributes toLate Governor Shri Tandon.

Late Tandon was a symbolof purity in public life:Chouhan

Chief Minister Shri Chouhansaid that the sad news of GovernorShri Lalji Tandon’s demise camethis morning. He remained en-gaged in the service of the nationthroughout his life. His contribu-tion will always be remembered.Shri Tandon was a symbol of purityin public life. As Governor of Mad-hya Pradesh, he always gave guid-ance and inspiration in public in-terest. We have all seen the innova-tions he had suggested in the fieldof higher education. Not only didhe get the gaushala operated in RajBhavan, but he himself used to saythat I will ensure that this experi-ment is a success. He used to greetevery visitor wholeheartedly. He al-ways gave priority to mutual har-mony and relations in politics. Heviewed politics is a medium of ser-

vice. Whichever party it is, every-one should serve the nation to-gether. Chief Minister ShriChouhan said that Shri Lalji Tan-don, born on April 12, 1935, lived apublic life of social service of sevendecades with great spirit. He estab-lished deep rapport with all sec-tions of the society. He personifiedthe unwavering spirit of takingeveryone along and working in so-cial interest by remaining an Ajat-shatru (one who has no enemy). Aunending series of public welfareworks are included in his accountdue to his continuous activities. Hewas among those few mass leaderswho practiced national service andmoral values ??through politicsand realized the Indian concept ofAntyodaya.

Chief Minister Shri Chouhansaid that when Shri Tandonreached the Legislative Council inthe year 1978 with such a lofty, wideand austere background of publiclife, he left his mark there too andgave new heights to parliamentarydignities. Apart from being a two-time member of the Uttar PradeshLegislative Council, he also played

the role of Leader of the House. Hewas elected to the Legislative As-sembly thrice. As Leader of Opposi-tion there, he told people how thevoices of protest should be andhow the government can be com-pelled to listen to public voice evenwhile being polite.

Every step of Tandonjibecame a new story ofprogress

Chief Minister Shri Chouhansaid that as a senior minister of Ut-tar Pradesh, every step of Tandonjibecame a new story of progressand new records were being creat-ed. He managed the responsibili-ties of significant portfolios likeEnergy, Housing, Town Develop-ment, Water Resources while tak-ing over as minister five times. With his administrative skills, vi-sion and determination, Shri Tan-don helped to deliver direct bene-fits to crores of people of UttarPradesh. He changed the conditionand direction of these depart-ments.

Chief Minister Shri Chouhan

said that the improvements andchanges incorporated by Shri Tan-don as a minister are unforget-table. The schemes designed forthe downtrodden and the under-privileged to lead the Indian con-cept of Antyodaya under the lead-ership of Tandon ji at that timewere nationally acclaimed. It washe who realized the dream of get-ting house ownership rights to thedowntrodden section working forRs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 15. Not only this, the plan of giving a fruit-bearingtree and a milching animal alongwith a house was the result of Tan-don’s multi-faceted thinking. Hedid extensive ground work forpoverty alleviation. Communitycentres, night shelters were set up,slums were given a face lift. Thesalt water problem of Mathura-Vrindavan was solved.

Chief Minister Shri Chouhansaid that Shri Tandon undertookhistorical work due to his tendencyto work for public welfare. For thefirst time, the prohibition of cowslaughter was enacted in UttarPradesh. The construction of the 5km-long ghat in Haridwar withpublic cooperation was the resultof his unique thinking. He devel-oped such basic facilities forKumbh in Haridwar that now thereis not much new work to be donefor the Kumbh event. The urgencyand determination with whichTandon ji did the task of handingover 42 acres of land to Shri RamJanmabhoomi Nyas as in-charge ofAyodhya affairs has no second ex-ample.

Chief Minister Shri Chouhansaid that the process of making theimpossible possible in the life ofTandon Ji never stopped. In theyear 2003, the simultaneous dedi-cation/laying down of 1001schemes by him was registered inthe Limca Book of Records.

Tandonji maintained hisrole as a social worker

Apart from this, the biggestcharacteristic of Shri Lalji Tandon

was that even after becoming apolitician, he maintained his roleas a social worker. That is why hewas always seen as a symbol ofcommunal unity and a great son ofhumanity. Shri Tandon revived theancient tradition of graceful Holiprocession in Lucknow. He estab-lished the tradition of public KaviSammelan and always took part init. He took over the reins of JaiPrakash Narayan’s Samagra KrantiAndolan in Lucknow. He went tojail in emergency, suffered heavytorture. He established an identityas an orator. Hence he becamepopular. This was Shri Tandon’sbiggest property.

On the basis of this, Shri Tandonbecame MP from Lucknow in theyear 2009 and extended the legacyof Atal ji. Tandon had very closefamily ties with great thinkers likePandit Deendayal Upadhyay andLohia ji and great leaders likeBharat Ratna Nana Ji Deshmukh,Atal Behari Vajpayee and JayPrakash Narayan. Close proximitywith such people enriched ShriTandon’s experiences. He tookcharge in Madhya Pradesh on July29, 2019. One year of his tenurewas nearing completion. We wouldhave benefited from his guidanceeven more, but God had decidedotherwise. As the Governor ofMadhya Pradesh, Karmayogi ShriTandon had put all his skills andstrength to uplift the field of highereducation. His tenure in MadhyaPradesh will also be rememberedforever.

Tandonji was a gentle,soft-spoken person:Anandiben Patel

Acting Governor Anandiben Pa-tel said Tandonji was a gentle, soft-spoken person. He had long expe-rience of politics. He won from for-mer Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vaj-payee’s Lucknow seat and becamean MP. In Lucknow, he got manydevelopment works done. Hisdeath has caused an irreparable

It is reported that thecoronavirus vaccine isnow ready for prepara-tion. 2 trials of this vac-cine have been success-ful. If the third trial isalso successful, then thevaccine will be availableto the general public.

It should be consid-ered good news becausethe world has beenfighting the coronavirusfor the last 8 months. This terrible epidemichas killed thousands ofhuman beings. Thewhole world’s economyand life are hit.

Corona infectionwhich started fromDecember 2019 from thecity of Wuhan, China hasnow spread all over theworld. But no authenticvaccine or drug of thisvirus has yet been pre-pared. Talking about theongoing efforts towardsmaking the vaccine, there are clinical trials of23 vaccines of coronavirus worldwide.

Human trials havebeen successful in thefirst and second phaseand now the vaccinenamed Kovaccine isgoing to start trial inIndia. The trial will startat All India Institute ofMedical Sciences(AIIMS), Delhi. This trialwill be done on 100healthy people. Thosewho will be tried will beaged from 18 to 55 years. In such trials, two dosesof this vaccine will begiven under the supervi-sion of experts. The sec-ond dose will be giventwo weeks after the firstdose. This vaccine willbe given via injection.

However, nearly half adozen Indian compa-nies are engaged indeveloping a vaccine forthe Covid-19 virus. Thefirst trial of the coronavaccine in the world,

including Europe, beganin Oxford, UK. It washere that the testing ofhumans for the vaccineof Corona virus infec-tion started. 800 peoplewere selected as volun-teer for the beginningphase. This vaccine wasprepared by a team fromOxford University. SarahGilbert, professor of vac-cineology at the JennerInstitute, is leading theteam. It is claimed thatthe first human trial ofthe Oxford vaccine hasbeen successful.

If all goes well, it ispossible that an effectivevaccine of the coronawill be prepared verysoon. The first Covid-19vaccine tested in the UShas provided the sameimmunity to the peopleas scientists expected. Now this vaccine is to betested.

From July 27, this vac-cine will be tested on 30thousand people andwill be found outwhether this vaccine canreally save the humanbody from Covid-19. Theresults so far are posi-tive, but on the basis ofthis it cannot be saidthat it can be given tothe general public. Forthis, in the next twophases, 10 thousandpeople will be tested inBritain, 30 thousand inAmerica, 2 thousand inSouth Africa and 5 thou-sand in Brazil. Only afterthe results of the thirdphase will be decidedwhether it can be givento the people or not. It isdecided by these ongoing efforts world-wide that the coronavaccine will eventuallybe ready.

It will take more thanthree months at most. However, it is not yetdecided what the cost ofthis vaccine will be.

Happy news

TK NandananThe disconcerting news is that

coronavirus has penetrated deepinto rural India, covering more than90 per cent of the terrain and 712 outof 736 districts are coronavirus-hitacross the country.

The number of affected districtsindicates that the virus is fast mak-ing foray at last into villages, the lastbastioncoronavirus has not beenable to conquer yet. Unfortunately, these villages are falling one by oneto coronavirus’ attack and thus 97%of India has become coronavirus-hitand the situation has become highlyexplosive.

This is indeed sad news. Anothersad news is that monsoon has hit thenation throwing the lives of millionsout of gear. Assam, Bihar, Delhi,Maharashtra and many otherregions are witnessing unprecedent-ed fury of monsoon. Sadly, calami-ties one after another hit the nation.

As the country is preparing toreopen schools and colleges, a newstudy in South Korea has warnedthat teens are more likely to spreadthe virus within a household thanyounger children and adults.

The study published on the USCentre for Disease Control andPrevention website has pointed outthat while children younger than age10 do not transmit the virus, it isoften those between the ages of 10and 19 who can spread the disease at

least as well as adults do. This meansthat school and colleges are not sup-posed to reopen this academic year.

The study comes at a time when

the schools and colleges are about tobe reopened and the study alsoholds importance for India as it isunder intense pressure to reopen theschools and colleges.

The alarming situation would bethat there are as many as 33 crorestudent population in the country

and when the schools and collegesopen, this potential student commu-nity would carry the virus in a morethreatening way jeopardizing the

government measures taken to fightthe Covid-19 pandemic.

The study also suggests that asschools reopen, communities willsee clusters of infection take rootthat include children of all ages, which is more worrisome for the stu-dent community.

Another grim reality is that Keralaboasted of eliminating coronavirusis getting battered and bruised bycoronavirus on a daily basis.

Despite Sunday being holiday andmost of the people staying indoors, arecord number of 821 persons werediagnosed with coronavirus in thestate. Now a sense of gloom andpanic has gripped everyone andhelplessness is writ large on every-one’s face.

So, a state which has almost con-tained the coronavirus spread is nowrelapsing into its worst impact onthe state. First of all, let us accept thereality of coronavirus and its fatalinfluence on mankind. At this junc-ture, what we can do now as part offighting coronavirus is to obey allthose instructions the health depart-ment has issued in the coronaviruspandemic case. Let us all be opti-mistic rather than pessimisticbecause a little bit optimism willtruly boost our fighting morale. Letus look to the optimistic BrazilianPresident Jairo Bolsonaro, who, despite infected with coronavirus, said,” I’m well, normal.

I even want to take a walk aroundhere, but I can’t due to medical rec-ommendations.” On another occa-sion he said referring obliquely toimposition of lockdown, “People aregoing to die, I am sorry.” “But wecan’t stop a car factory because thereare traffic accidents.”

Phenol (carbolic acid) is one of theoldest antiseptic agents. Phenol iscommonly found in mouthwashes, scrub soaps and surface disinfectants, and is the active ingredient found inhousehold disinfectants (e.g. Lysol,Pine Sol). Phenolic disinfectants areeffective against bacteria (especiallygram positive bacteria) and envelopedviruses. A 2% solution of either pure orsaponated cresol “lysol” in hot water iscommonly used as a disinfectant forinanimate objects. Hexachlorophene(a trichlorinated bis-phenol) has astrong bacteriostatic action againstmany gram-positive organisms(including staphylococci) but only a few gram-negative ones. The bactericidalactivity is enhanced by EDTA and warm temperatures; it is decreased by alka-line medium (through ionization), lipids, soaps, and cold temperatures. Oralingestion or extensive application to skin can cause systemic toxicity, mani-fested primarily by CNS and cardiovascular effects; death may result. Phenolhas good penetrating power into organic matter and is mainly used for disin-fection of equipment or organic materials that are to be destroyed (eg, infect-ed food and excreta). Because of its irritant and corrosive properties andpotential systemic toxicity, it’s use is restricted.

Such live telecast becomesimportant and essential because ofhighly restricted permission givento pilgrims because of ongoingcorona-pandemic.

Unfortunately there is no public-ity of such an important pro-gramme, otherwise Doordarshanmight have again broken record ofTRP rating like happened duringtelecast of Ramayana andMahabharat during lockdown. It is

also regretting that Doordarshancould no retain its supremacy over

private channels like happenedduring lockdown even though pro-

grammes at various channels ofDoordarshan are far-far better in

quality and substance than thosetelecast at private channels, main

reason being lack of publicity apartfrom cable-operators and dish-TVoperators giving least priority toDoordarshan channels in terms ofnumbering.

Already there is a law whereby allcable-TV and Dish-TV operatorsare bound to compulsorily telecastall the 25 Doordarshan channelsapart from Lok Sabha TV and RajyaSabha TV. Union Ministry ofInformation and broadcast shouldmake it compulsory for all cable-TVand Dish-TV operators to place allthe Doordarshan channels, RajyaSabha TV and Lok Sabha TV instarting initial numbers. Agencies, Hong KongChinese activities along the

Sino-Indian border eerily mimicwhat has been happening in theSouth China Sea for nearly adecade. It is thus illustrative to lookat the latter to predict what mayhappen in the former, as eventshappen against a backdrop ofplummeting international trust inChinese intentions.

Illustrating the strained rela-tion, a recent couple of weeks sawthe US Navy exercising two aircraftcarrier strike groups in the SouthChina Sea, much to Beijing’s cha-grin. However, such an occasion israre and must of necessity be tem-porary. By 18 July, the Nimitz StrikeGroup had passed on through theMalacca Strait, heading towardsthe Indian Ocean.

The UK has also intimated thatits carrier HMS Queen Elizabethwill sail in the South China Seanext year, exercising with Ameri-can and Japanese warships. Again, such a presence is at best brief, al-though it does express consterna-

tion in London about Chinese ac-tivities there.

Before looking at similaritiesbetween the South China Sea andthe Indian border, we may quicklysum up the situation in the territo-rially disputed maritime area.

Agencies, LondonThe University of Oxford’s pos-

sible COVID-19 vaccine could berolled out by the end of the yearbut there is no certainty that willhappen, the lead developer of thevaccine said.

The experimental vaccine, which has been licensed to As-traZeneca, produced an immuneresponse in early-stage clinicaltrials, data showed on Monday, preserving hopes it could be inuse by the end of the year.

“The end of the year target forgetting vaccine rollout, it’s a pos-sibility but there’s absolutely nocertainty about that because weneed three things to happen,”Sarah Gilbert told BBC Radio.

She said it needed to be shownto work in late-stage trials, thereneeded to be large quantitiesmanufactured and regulators hadto agree quickly to license it foremergency use.

“All of these three things haveto happen and come together be-fore we can start seeing largenumbers of people vaccinated,”she said.

The Oxford scientists had eyeda million doses of the potentialvaccine to be produced by Sep-tember.

Although the deal with As-traZeneca has provided manu-facturing capacity to do that, thelower prevalence of the novelcoronavirus in Britain has com-

plicated the process of proving itsefficacy.

Late-stage trials are under wayin Brazil and South Africa and aredue to start in the United States.

“The crucial thing is that weget enough people exposed to thevirus who’ve also had the vaccinethat we can actually get someproper adjudication of whether itprevents the disease and remainssafe,” John Bell, Regius Professorof Medicine at the University ofOxford, told BBC Radio.

“We’re hopeful, particularlygiven the low incident rates in theUK that the individuals recruitedin Brazil and South Africa will ul-timately be able to provide uswith the data.”

There are no approved vac-cines for COVID-19, but theWorld Health Organization hassaid AstraZeneca’s shot is one ofthe leading candidates.

If you are a new parent of your dog, then youneed to be aware of his or her eating habits. Howmuch and how often they should eat? These aresome of the tidbits that you should know about. As we humans eat three meals along withsnacks, dogs do not eat the same way.

They have a completely different pattern.Their eating habit depends on their breed, ageand health. So, before you decide any particulardiet plan for your furry friend, let us guide youon this.

These are the things to remember for feed-ing your dog:

1- If your dog has a healthy weight and iscompletely normal and fit, then you can try thefree-choice feeding method. Here, you leave thefood in one corner and let your dog decide whento eat it. When he is hungry, he will eat the food. But the downside of this method is, the food cancatch insects or rodents. So, you should coverthe food with a transparent lid, so that your dogcan see it.

2- For the dogs, who cannot stop eating, por-tion control method is the best one. The portion

would be decided based on your dog’s weight.Consult your vet to decide the right portion. Hewill guide you. If you are giving him commercialdog food, then follow the instructions given onthe packet. But taking advice from your vet is al-ways recommended.

3- Next is timed feeding. In this method, youset 30 minutes time to let your dog finish thefood. He can eat as much as he wants in this pe-riod. In this way, when you give him food after agap of 8-12 hours, he will be hungry.

4- Don’t forget to ask your vet about theirtreats. If you need to give him treats frequentlyfor training, then give a very small amount.Treats will also be decided as per their weight.Talk to your vet about it.

5- Often dogs always seem to be hungry. Thisshould not be the case. If he is always hungry, then increase the food amount. But it is alwaysbetter to talk to your vet before doing this. Oncertain cases, food portion will be changed, i.e.when your dog is pregnant or more active, weather is hot or cold and when he or she is re-covering from an injury.

Mr Barclay’s commentscame after ICC, in its latestmeeting on Monday, saidthat planning for the tournament, to be held in New Zealand from Febru-ary 6 to March 7, was still on schedule, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ICC, however, in the same meeting, decided to postpone the Men’sT20 World Cup in Australia, which was to be held in October-November,to 2022. “The decision (about the ODI World Cup) will be made in the nexttwo weeks,” Mr Barclay told Radio New Zealand.

“It simply has to be because if there is a need to postpone that event, then obviously we need to know that sooner rather than later and like-wise, if it is to go ahead, then we need to make a final decision, so that wecan throw all the resources necessary to run a first class world event inFebruary,” he added.

Nagpur (UNI)With substantial growth in coal

production over the last 5 years,Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), asubsidiary of Coal India Ltd hasbeen able to provide cheaper landedprice coal to state and private Gen-cos of Central, Western and South-ern India, a press release issued byWCL said here on Tuesday.

According to the release the efforthas helped power plants in reducingpower cost leading to cheaper pow-er for the consumers.

State Gencos of Maharashtra(MAHAGENCO), MadhyaPradesh(MPPGCL), Gujrat (GSECL)and Karnataka (KPCL) along withother private power producers arelargely dependent on WCL for theircoal requirement.

MAHAGENCO has the largestshare of more than 50% of the dis-patch followed by MPPGCL with12% share.

Coal production in WCL wentdown to 39 million tonnes during2013-14. Lack of project viabilityand non-availability of land werethe major issues restricting the fur-ther growth of the company.

Power consumers had no option, but to take coal from other sub-sidiaries of Coal India, viz. SECL,MCL & SCCL. Due to great dis-tances, consumers have had to paymore for railway freight thus makinglanded cost of coal higher.

In the last 5 years WCL has ex-panded its existing projects while al-so starting new projects by investingin additional land acquisition, em-ployment against land etc. Its 20new projects have a capacity of45.64 million tonne.

These projects have contributed35.8 million tonnes of productionduring 2019-20. As a result, produc-tion of WCL during 2019-20 in-creased to 57.6 million tonne. This

growth is substantial as WCL lost 22million tonne of production duringthe last 5 years due to exhaustion ofreserves.

During FY 2013-14, dispatch toMAHAGENCO was 17.60 milliontonne which has gone up to 26 mil-lion tonne in 2019-20. The averagesaving on freight to Mahagenco dueto procuring of coal from WCL is Rs1200 per tonne.

In order to cater more to PowerConsumers.

WCL has dedicated its 11 minesfor supply of coal specifically to thepower sector by notifying thesemines as ‘mine specific sources’. Thesavings to consumers on freight costis partly being shared by WCL bycharging small premium over regu-lar price. This has helped WCL toopen new mines, which will lead toa win-win situation for both WCLand its customers by further aug-menting higher dispatches in thecoming years. It is pertinent to men-tion that landed cost of mine specif-ic coal from WCL is also muchcheaper than landed cost of coalfrom other coal companies to theconsumers located in Central, West-ern and Southern region includingMahagenco.

WCL has envisaged an ambitiousplan of production from the current57.6 MT to 75 MT in the year 2023-24 and to 100 MT by 2027-28. Inview of growth in production anddispatch, WCL is geared-up to caterto the entire coal requirement ofthese consumers from the year2020-21 onwards. It is estimatedthat the coal requirement of Maha-genco during FY 2020-21 will bearound 35 MT.

WCL has already submitted aproposal for sourcing their entirecoal requirement from WCL whichwill result in huge savings for Maha-genco on freight cost.
