Katie and Holly Moffat, from Tennyson Road, took part in the contest to create a new flag for the County, when Yorkshireman and history enthusiast Andy Strange- way discovered that County Durham was the only county in the north without its own flag. Strangeway proposed the project in a chance meeting with Durham County Council chairman Pauline Charlton, at an unveiling of the new flag for the North Riding of Yorkshire earlier this year. The competition to design the flag attracted 34 entries, which a judging panel narrowed down to six before 2,500 people voted for their favourite motif. The winning design features the St Cuthbert’s cross, rep- resenting the Anglo Saxon Bishop, scholar and patron saint of Northern England, buried at Durham Cathe- dral. The blue and yellow colours were selected from the Durham coat of Arms. James Moffat, proud father to Katie and Holly com- mented, “I am so proud that in 100 years’ time my daughters’ flag will be flying throughout the historic County Durham”. On Thursday 21st November the flag was unfurled and blessed outside Durham Cathedral in a ceremony attended by a string of civic dignitaries. MP meets Area Manager from leading Armed Forces charity

The Royal British Legion has thanked Phil Wilson, MP for Sedgefield, for taking the time to meet with Legion Area Manager, Andrew Drake. The Legion is the leading provider of welfare for the Armed Forces community and last week local MP Phil Wilson attended an event in the Houses of Parliament dedicated to showcasing the Legion’s work in the Sedgefield area. Phil used the oppor-tunity to discuss with Mr Drake the changing face of Armed Forces welfare provision in the local com-munity, and to hear more about the Legion’s work developing Community Covenants locally.Andrew Drake, the Legion’s Area Manager, said, “It was great to

see Phil Wilson MP, we really appreciated him making the time to drop in. Many people don’t realise that we spend £1.6 million every week in direct welfare support for the Serving and ex-Service community and their families, so we were delighted to tell Phil about the range of services we provide”.Phil Wilson MP said, “I was really pleased to meet my Royal British Legion Area Manager. Andrew made it clear that the Legion’s work does not stop on 11th November. Providing assistance for members and former members of the Armed Forces who have been injured, or who need help in other ways, as well as their families, is a 365-day-a-year job.

It is vital that we as a nation honour the sacri-fices made by our Armed Forces, and I’m proud to support the work of The Royal British Legion.”The Royal British Legion provides care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families. As the nation’s leading Armed Forces charity, the Legion spends £84 million a year on vital welfare work, providing social, emotional and fi-nancial care and support to serving and ex-Service people and their families. Approximately 9 million people in the UK are eligible for the Legion’s support, which are proud to serve those in need, today and for the rest of their lives.

Phil Wilson MP with Andrew Drake, the Legion’s Area Manager for the North East.

Shoe Box Appeal success

Once again the Ferryhill Shoe Box Appeal, in asso-ciation with the Methodist Church, has been a huge success. This ever-popular appeal has grown over the years and again this year there has been a very generous response from donors within Ferryhill and sur-rounding communities. A spokesperson said,

“To all donors, be they schools, churches, chat and craft clubs or private individuals, the organising team for the Appeal wish to extend their heartfelt and sincere thanks for their extreme generosity.“We would also like to thank all those who helped in any way during shoe box week. “Also a big thank you to

the young people from Enter CIC for their assis-tance in carrying out the shoe boxes to the awaiting transport on Sunday night”.The total number of boxes dispatched was 979, together with £762 towards transport costs. It is planned that the boxes be sent to Bosnia and the Ukraine.

Special Christmas community film

Enter CIC will be holding a special community viewing of the Christmas classic 'White Christmas' on Thursday 5th December at 2pm. The event is specifically for elderly people living in the community who may be lonely or feeling vulnerable at this time of

year.A spokesperson com-mented, “If you know of anyone in the community who may benefit from a couple of hours’ company and a lovely, friendly af-ternoon, please will you let Enter CIC know. “It's important that we find those living in our

community who may have little opportunity to engage with others, or due to age may be finding things a little difficult.” Afternoon tea will be provided. Tickets for the showing are available directly from Enter CIC by calling 01740 655437.

During the early hours of Saturday 23rd November, the garages and outhouses of three properties in Mill Cottages, Rushyford, were burgled. It is believed that the of-fenders made off along the nearby A689, abandoning a Honda motorcycle, which was one of the stolen items.Other items stolen included:• LD 16-channel audio mixing desk;

• Peavey Special – Guitar amplifier;• Cube Graphite hybrid pedal cycle with Shimano Deore gears;• Raleigh ladies grey pedal cycle;• Ryobi 45cm petrol chainsaw;• 2 air rifles.Police are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen anything suspi-cious in the Rushyford area overnight, and to anybody who may be offered any of

the above items for sale, to get in touch by calling police on 101.PC Hope said, “All residents are advised to ensure the security of their property. With the winter nights now upon us, do not give thieves the advantage.“Keep your homes secure and well-lit on these dark nights. “Further crime prevention advice can be obtained from any Police station.”

The next meeting of Dean Bank Residents’ Asso-ciation is taking place on Monday 2nd December at 7pm in Dean Bank Institute. “This is an opportunity to find out what is happen-ing in your area and also express your view and issues you may have,” said a spokesperson.Everyone is welcome to attend.Following a consultation event by Durham County

Council on the County Plan, the Residents’ Asso-ciation responded by letter opposing their inclusion of the Praxis site in the asset register.Secretary of the asso-ciation, Joan Weston, said, “The land could be sold for development at any time for the building of 12 houses. Anyone wishing to see the letter can do so at any of the Residents’ Meetings”.

R.A. meeting

This year’s official switch-on of Chilton’s Christmas lights will be held on Friday 29th November. Assisting the Mayor, Coun-cillor Elizabeth Bruce, will be this year’s Gala Princess, Sadie Morley. Festivities will commence from 6.30pm in the Town Square with the official switch-on at 7pm. During the event, local

school children from Chilton Primary School will be singing Christmas carols and members of St Aidan’s Church have kindly agreed to circulate with sweet mince pies and refresh-ments. Also on site will be a catering van and a small children’s ride. Of course the event would not be complete without a visit from Santa!

Throughout 2013, three men: James Latcham, Stephen Buston and Andrew Heaviside, have been raising money for two charities: Leukaemia and Lymphoma research and The Brain Tumour Charity, by taking part in Chal-lenge 321 - to run a million meters. The boys would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported them throughout the year. As a result of their efforts and people’s generosity, they have currently raised £10,300, which will be spilt equally between the two charities.Andrew Heaviside com-mented, “Our challenge of running over 1 million meters throughout the year is nearing the end and we will be running our final race of the year at Gates-head on December 21st. “Every penny of your dona-tions count towards helping people who are maybe not as lucky as most of us and are having to deal with day-to-day life coping with Cancer. “There is still time to donate and anything you can give will be greatly ap-

preciated, so let’s give it a big push. “We would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone that wanted to take part in the Great North Run with us to raise money for our challenge.”Amanda Heaviside, of Fairy Hill Cakes, would like to offer people the unique opportunity to win them-selves two amazing prizes in the form of a cake raffle in support of Challenge 321.Each £1 donation gives one entry to a raffle for a celebration cake to the value of £100 while each £5 donation gains entry to the draw for a three tier wedding, christening or celebration cake to the value of £450. The cakes will be made to the winner’s design briefs and specification. The celebration cake (£100) can be booked and collected within the dates of 1st February and 1st December 2014 and the three tier cake (£450) must be booked and col-lected within the dates of 1st February 2014 and 1st December 2015 (both are subject to availability and to Amanda Heaviside’s dis-

cretion). The draw will take place on 21st December to coincide with the final day of Chal-lenge 321, when James Latcham, Stephen Buston and Andrew Heaviside will be completing the final 30k run at Saltwell Park, Gates-head. The Cake Raffle will be drawn on this day at 3pm in Llewellyns Bar in Ferryhill and the winners notified thereafter. To enter the cake raffle visit: www.virginmoneygiv-i n g . c o m / t e a m /c h a l -lenge321, and type either ‘wedding cake draw’ or ‘celebration cake draw’ into the ‘message’. For multiple entries state this in the message section so that there is no confu-sion: for example for a £3 donation you would type ‘3 entries into celebration cake draw’. If you are a UK tax payer, tick for ‘gift aid’. Once you have made your donation contact Amanda Heaviside by email: [email protected] or by text: 07875 552 488, leaving your name and email address or phone number.

Dear Editor,

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Katie and Holly Moffat of Chilton on their marvellous achievement in winning the competition to design County Durham’s official flag.

The design itself is very striking and will attract admiration from both local people and visitors to our County when it is flown through-out the region.

Well done to the two young people from Chilton, I'm sure that everyone in the town is very proud of you both.

Christine PottsCounty Councillor for Chilton
