Chapters 1 & 2 – Study Guide

1. What is the setting of the first part of the story? It is May 3 in Bistritz.

2. What does Jonathan Harker find waiting for him when he arrives at the Golden Krone Hotel? He receives a letter from Dracula.

3. Why does the hotel landlady beg Jonathan not to continue his journey? Because it was the eve of St. George’s Day and at the stroke of midnight all of the evil things in the world will have full sway.

4. What does the landlady of the hotel give Jonathan Harker for protection against evil? She gave him a crucifix from around her neck.

5. How does Jonathan Harker describe the driver that meets him at the Borgo Pass? He describes him as a man that is in a big hurry and doesn’t have any time to waste.

6. What does Jonathan find strange about his carriage ride to Castle Dracula? He notices that they have been driving around in circles on their whole trip. He also notices that wolves randomly begin to howl once it gets darker outside. Finally, at the end of their ride, Harker notices a blue light that shows up at the side of the road.

7. During Jonathan Harker’s ride to Castle Dracula what is “all so strange and uncanny that a dreadful fear came upon [him]?” Once the driver notices the blue light on the side of the road he gets off of the caleche and is gone for awhile. While the driver is gone, the wolves come closer to Harker. A cloud moves in front of the moon so everything is dark and once the cloud moves, all of the wolves have left.

8. What is it about the caleche driver that seems to make the biggest impression on Jonathan Harker? Out of all of the things about the driver, Harker is truly amazed by his strength.

9. Describe the man who greets Jonathan Harker at Castle Dracula. The man who greets Harker is a tall old man wearing all black that has a long white mustache.

10. Who are the “children of the night?” Count Dracula refers to the wolves as the “children of the night”.

11. What does Jonathan Harker notice is absent from every room he enters in the castle? Once he’s in the castle, Harker notices that each room lacks a mirror.

12. What does the Count want Jonathan Harker to teach him while at Castle Dracula? The Count wants Jonathan Harker to teach him about England and how to speak better English.

14. When Jonathan Harker looks in his shaving mirror, what peculiar thing does he notice about the Count? When Harker looks in the shaving mirror he notices that the Count doesn’t have a reflection.

15. What surprises Jonathan Harker when he tries to explore the outdoor grounds of Castle Dracula? He realizes that all of the outside doors are locked which means that he is trapped in the castle.

DRACULAChapters 3 & 4 – Study Guide

Chapters 3-4:1. Describe Jonathan Harker’s thoughts after he discovers the Count laying the table in the

dining room. After Harker discovers the Count laying the table in the dining room he begins to think that if he is doing all of the chores fit for a servant than he must have been the driver of the coach. This is a bad thing because if he was the driver it means that he can control the wolves with just a raise of the hand. He begins to wonder if all of the things that the people in Bistritz were saying were true. He is thankful for the crucifix even though he was raised to reject it. He decides that he must learn more about the Count, but secretly of course.

2. Count Dracula claims to be the ancestor of what famous warrior? Dracula claims that he is a descendant of Attila the Hun.

3. What does the Count warn Jonathan not to do when he is alone at night? The Count warns Jonathan to not sleep in any other room but his own for if he does he will have horrible nightmares due to the bad memories in the other rooms.

4. Describe the way Jonathan Harker sees the Count leave the Castle. Jonathan sees the Count leave the Castle by crawling down the outside wall face down with his cloak spreading out around him like great wings.

5. Jonathan Harker falls asleep in the parlor. What does he see upon waking? Jonathan wakes up to three beautiful woman vampires that were about to suck his blood.

6. Describe the Count’s reaction to finding the women with Jonathan Harker. The Count becomes furious and throws them away from Jonathan.

3/24/097. What does Jonathan Harker believe he hears coming from the bag the Count had thrown to the floor? Jonathan thinks that he hears a child in the bag.

8. What happens to the women and the bag? The bag and the women seem to disappear into the moonlight together.

9. The Count instructs Jonathan to write three letters home. What is the content of these letters? The first letter says that Jonathan will be leaving soon. The second letter says that Jonathan will be leaving tomorrow. And the third one says that he has left the Castle and is now in Bistritz.

10. Jonathan attempts to send letters home without the Count reading them. What happens to the letters? The person who was supposed to deliver Jonathan’s letters ended up giving them straight to Dracula. Dracula decides that he will send the letter to Peter, but he burns the one to Mina.

11. What does Jonathan discover upon waking on 31 May? Jonathan realizes that almost all of his belongings are missing.

12. What do the Slovaks deliver to the castle? The Slovaks deliver boxes that are supposedly empty according to Jonathan.

13. When Count Dracula leaves the castle on 24 June, what does Jonathan Harker notice? Jonathan notices that the Count is wearing one of his suits and has the bag that he had earlier given to the three vampire women.

14. Jonathan goes to the window when he hears the agonizing cry of a woman. What does she yell upon seeing Jonathan’s face in the window? Once the woman sees Jonathan in the window she yells “Monster, give me my child!”

15. What happens to the woman as she continues to bang on the door of the Count’s castle? As the woman continues to bang on the wall, the Count “activates” his wolves and sends them to the woman. The wolves eat here and then they leave.

16. Jonathan decides to climb the wall of the castle into the Count’s room. Describe what Jonathan Harker discovers in the Count’s room. He sees a pile of gold from all around the country in a corner of the Count’s room. He also notices that the Count’s room is quite similar to the southern rooms and it rather empty. He finally finds a door that leads to a ruined chapel.

17. Jonathan tells the Count that he wants to leave the night of 29 June, but he suddenly changes his mind. Why? Jonathan changes his mind because he fears that if he wishes to leave that Dracula will feed him to the wolves.

DRACULAChapters 5 & 6 – Study Guide

2. What kind of an institution does Dr. John Seward run? Dr. John Seward runs a lunatic-asylum. (pg. 77)

3. From whom did Lucy receive marriage proposals? Lucy receives marriage proposals from Dr. John Seward, Quincey P. Morris, and Arthur Holmwood. (pg. 75-79)

4. Identify Quincey Morris. Quincey Morris is an American from Texas. He is very well educated and has great manners. He likes to amuse Lucy with his American slang. He is the second man to propose to Lucy. (pg. 80-82)

8. Describe Renfield’s systematic way of collecting lives. He fed smaller animals to slightly bigger animals. Then he fed the animals that had eaten the smaller animals to other animals that were slightly bigger than the bigger/smaller animal. He would continue this cycle for as long as he could. He fed flies some of his food, then he fed the flies to the spiders, then he fed the spiders to the sparrows, then he wanted to feed the sparrows to cats but Dr. Seward wouldn’t give him a cat. So, he ate the cat himself. (pg. 97)

9. What unusual thing does Renfield eat? Why? At first Renfield eats flies but then he eats his sparrows because Dr. Seward refused to give him a cat. He ate the sparrows to keep the soul collecting chain going. (pg. 97)

10. What odd, recent behavior of Lucy is disturbing to Mina? Lucy has begun to start sleepwalking again. This is what is disturbing to Mina. (pg. 98)

DRACULAChapters 7 & 8 – Study Guide

1. Describe the mysterious schooner’s entrance into the harbor. There is a huge storm and they keep sailing along. The tempest broke but they keep sailing ahead at full speed. The schooner sails into a fog that makes everything disappear and when it’s possible to see again, the schooner has made it safely to shore, avoiding a reef that had previously destroyed many ships. (pg. 104-107)

2. What is discovered on board the mysterious schooner? The captain is dead with his hands tied to the wheel and the only cargo is wooden boxes full of dirt. (pg. 109)

3. What is the name of the schooner, and where did she come from? The schooner is name Demeter and is from Varna, Russia. (pg. 110)

4. What is the only living thing on the ship? The only living thing on the ship was the dog that ran away once the ship reached shore. (pg. 110)

5. According to the captain’s addendum to the ship’s log, what happened to the men on the ship? He discovered that they were being killed by “the monster”. At first he thought that they were only vanishing. (pg. 113-116)

6. Describe what the captain saw on the last night aboard ship. On the last night aboard ship, the captain saw the mate check the boxes and all of a sudden the mate let out a scream and then jumped off of the ship. The captain ties himself, with a crucifix, to the wheel of the ship so he can’t leave his ship. (pg. 116-117)

7. What happens to the old man who had befriended Mina and Lucy? Mr. Swales was found dead with a broken neck. (pg. 119)

8. On August 11th what does Mina discover when she awakens in the night? Mina discovers that Lucy is off on another sleepwalk adventure. (pg. 122)

17. Describe Renfield’s escape and return. Renfield had been sleeping then no more than ten minutes later the attendant saw his feet out the window. Dr. Seward finds Renfield pressed against a nearby chapel chanting “It is coming, Master”, along with some other things. Renfield puts up a good fight but Dr. Seward eventually gets Renfield into a straight jacket. (pg. 140-143)

DRACULAChapters 9 & 10 – Study Guide

4. After he is attacked by Renfield, what act does Dr. Seward witness that “positively sickened” him? Renfield licking up the blood that came from the doctor’s wound made the doctor feel “positively sickened”. (pg. 193)
