Our April Theme:
THE FIVE SENSES
Pajama & Picture Book Collection: Our EQ Project for the month of April! All Month Long: April 2nd - 27th
This April, Kinder Works is joining with the Pennsylvania Chapter of the "Pajama Program" to provide new pajamas
and picture books to children in need, many who are waiting and hoping to be adopted. Thousands of the young children
served by this program live in orphanages, group homes, and shelters. Since 2001, with the help of generous and caring
people and organizations including Oprah Winfrey and Scholastic Book Clubs, the Pajama Program has provided more
than one million pajamas and books to children in need nationwide! To read more about about this heart-warming
organization, go to http://pajamaprogram.org/WordPress/about-pajama-program/ and also watch the
video!
In our continuing effort to "make a difference," as well as our sincere belief that reaching
out to those in need is a valuable EQ lesson in giving for our children, Kinder Works is inviting
our families to join in this great cause by donating a new pair of pajamas or a new picture book
to this Program. We are collecting all sizes, for ages Infant to 6 years old. Our collection will
continue through the month of April; look for our collection baskets in the Atrium. As always,
participation is voluntary. Thank you for your generosity.
The world of experiences come to each one of us
through the five senses, and the more we practice
discrimination and sensitivity to them, the better we perceive!
Exercising sensitivity can open us up to a more vivid life,
broaden our experiential horizons, and thus fuel our
imaginations and augment our forms of expression. We will
use 'smell pots' to concentrate our attention on our nose; we'll
try various foods to find out about the basic 4 tastes, and we
will also work with many flavors; blindfolds can help us to
notice how things feel on our skin; sight exercises can include
values in color, contrasting light and dark, figure-ground
and spatial relations games; and the joys of hearing can be
enhanced with exercises in volume, tone & pitch,
discriminating among the sounds of musical instruments,
and the appreciation of silence...
As we
learned
about
creatures
that live
"Under the
Sea" last
month, Julia
made an
orange crab
using her
own hand-
prints!
In an EQ activity, our Toddlers practiced teamwork and
cooperation while playing a game called "Where is...?"
Vivian found the octopus when it was her turn!
Parent-Teacher Conferences:Thursday, April 5th
Look for Conference Sign-Up Sheets at drop off and pick up
Please mark your calendar for this opportunity to
meet with our teachers, who will share a collection of
your child’s work and discuss your Kinder Works Child
Profile and Portfolio with you. Our Kinder Works
Standards & Curriculum Guides are always available for
you to review.
You will receive a copy of your child’s Profile
prior to conference time. This is not a test, but a
record of observations of his or her development here
at school. We look forward to seeing you at your
conference on Thursday, April 5th.
*Please note that children do not attend
Kinder Works on this day.
Spring Egg Hunts:Tuesday & Wednesday, April 3rd & 4th
Kinder Works welcomes Spring with our annual
Egg Hunts. During your child's Gym & Music period,
the Kinder Works Rabbit will hide her eggs all over our
playground, and watch the excitement as the boys and
girls try to find all of her secret hiding places and fill
their bags with special treats!
WELCOME WARM WEATHER
Fun in the sun means it's time for sunscreen!
As the weather gets warmer, we spend more time
outside. Please dress your child appropriately for
outside play, wearing sunscreen. Also, please check
your child's cubby to be sure he/she has a change of
clothes suitable for the new season!
Per our Parent Handbook, our teachers will
reapply sunscreen to full day children, using
Waterbabies PURE & SIMPLE, SPF 50 by Coppertone
(a hypoallergenic, tear free formula); we welcome
parents to send a bottle of this type of sunscreen to
school with your child. If your child CANNOT use this
particular brand of sunscreen due to medical reasons,
please notify the Director in writing and supply
alternative sunscreen. THANK YOU!
Evann and Violet concentrated on their artwork as they created
colorful textured starfish by crumpling and gluing bits of tissue
paper onto star shapes in Creative Expression.
During our
"Under the Sea"
theme, Evan
rolled the 'giant
pearl' (big ball)
around the Gym!

"If You're
Happy and You
Know It, Shake
Your Rattle!"
Ms. Phyllis and
Gavin sang and
shook the rattle
during a musical
experience in
the Infant
Room.
Language and literacy skills flourished with our March theme: "Under the Sea"
As Ciara examined and identified a real starfish, Max looked through
our "Under the Sea" picture cards and found the picture to match!
Then they used words like "pointy," "bumpy," and "hard" to describe
the unique underwater creature.
We
enjoyed
many books
about sea
creatures
and ocean
activities in
March; Miss
Cayla read
"By the Sea"
with Mia
and Colin.
In Language
Arts last
month, we
practiced
saying the
names of
various sea
creatures,
including
"whale,"
"mermaid,"
and "puffer
fish." Giana
gripped the
'bingo painter'
with a fisted
grip while she
dot-painted a
"puffer fish"
of her own!
After reading a story about sea turtles with Miss Crystal,
Alexis and Mia used their fine motor skills to glue green
paper squares onto their turtle shells.
With a little help from Ms. Erin, Jackson squeezed
the white glue to fasten a sail to the "popsicle
stick mast" of his sailboat!
We ventured "Under the Sea" with artistic expression
and dramatic play in March
Ms. Laura
gently
guided
Zach to roll
the body of
his octopus
in green
paint as he
created a
3-D "Under
the Sea"
sculpture.
MacKenzie giggled as Ms. Laura painted her foot red so she
could make her very own "footprint lobster!"
Natalina sprinkled sand over her ocean collage to
complete the multi-step masterpiece.
Ms. Laura
gently
guided
Zach to roll
the body of
his octopus
in green
paint as he
created a
3-D "Under
the Sea"
sculpture.
Vivian
experimented
with various
objects as we
explored the
concepts of
"sink and
float."
After a
group
patterning
activity,
Valters
continued a
2-part
pattern with
a seashell
and a fish.
Zach explored
a "fishy sensory
bag" with his
senses of sight
and touch during
'center time' in
Early Logic.
Our March theme led us to
explore and discover the
world "Under the Sea"
Colin and JT used the tabletop magnifier to investigate the
intricate patterns, designs, and colors of various seashells
as we explored things found "Under the Sea."
The Toddlers
took turns
jumping off
the "dock" into
the "Kinder
Works Sea"
during an
outdoor Gym &
Music activity!
"Just look at the
world around
you, right here
on the ocean
floor..." Grady
and Gavin
pretended they
were “Under the
Sea” as they
danced in the
warm air and
sunshine on our
Toddler
playground!
We sang, moved, and
grooved through our "Under the Sea"
theme in March!
While exploring different ways to move "under the sea,"
Ms. Alisha and Noah practiced "crab-walking!"
The Toddlers took turns practicing their underhand tossing skills
as they enjoyed a group game of "Ring the Dolphin."
To simulate an “under the sea” adventure, we
transformed our castle into a 'submarine' and explored
the depths of the ocean!
During an
EQ lesson
about taking
care of our
environment
and the
creatures that
live in it, Mia
helped give
our 'sea
creatures' a
bath!
Our Toddlers worked together, adding scales to a
giant fish form to create a collaborative, and
colorful, mosaic masterpiece.
We shared, cared, and
worked together while venturing
"Under the Sea" in March!
Grady listened carefully to hear the sound of the ocean by
holding a seashell to his ear.
Budding
artists Andy
and Nako
exercised their
fine motor skills
by holding
crayons and
making colorful
marks on their
papers!
Gavin
enjoyed
watching
the
Toddlers
on the
playground
through the
Infant
Room
window.
Dominic strengthened his legs by bouncing
and playing in the exer-saucer.During an Early Logic activity,
Chase stacked the toy boats.
Maggie explored cause and effect
as she shook the toy octopus and
delighted at the noise it made!
Jack developed hand-eye coordination as
he reached for a toy duck.
Nako and Chase enjoyed a Language Arts
lesson with Ms. Gail, pointing to specific
objects in a picture book.
With a little
support from
Ms. Gail,
Delaney
practiced her
crawling skills.
