7.00x: Introduction to Biology – The Secret of Life

Eric Lander, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biology at MIT and Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. He is the President and Founding Director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

Lander was one of the principal leaders of the Human Genome Project. He and his colleagues are using these findings to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the basis of human diseases. Lander also serves as co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, which directly advises the White House on matters of science and technology.

7

• Free, intro level biology; no prerequisites• Taught by MIT professor Eric Lander• Twelve week course, March 5 – May 28• Topics include: biochemistry, genetics,

molecular biology, and genomics• Estimated effort: 6-8 hours/week• Certificate of mastery with passing grade• Over 33,000 individuals registered

Goal of the course: After completing the course, participants will have a foundation in biology allowing them to understand the remarkable medical revolution going on today.

This book provides biology teachers with an instructional framework for teaching:• Meiosis• Photosynthesis• Natural selection• Proteins and genes• Environmental systems and

human impact

The author counsels teachers to: • Identify students’ prior

conceptions• Select teaching strategies that

best dispel misunderstandings15

The author addresses the following topics: • Life and its diversity• Structure and function• Life processes and needs of

living things• Ecosystems and change• Reproduction and life cycles• Heredity and human biology

The author suggests that teachers can move students from where they are in their current thinking to where they need to be to achieve scientific understanding by using formative assessment probes.

Pedagogical Implications: This section addresses what is cognitively appropriate to teach by grade band, common pre- or misconceptions your students may encounter, related teaching resources, and promising pedagogical strategies to facilitate student learning.

Sample misconceptions for Heredity and Variation. Some students believe that:• Traits come from only one parent, that some traits always come from the mother

and others from the father.

• Environmentally produced characteristics can be inherited.

• Male or masculine traits are dominant.

• Girls inherit traits from mothers and boys from fathers.

Optional Pedagogical Certificate:Participants may invest $14.99 to receive a printable PDF certificate documenting the investment of 10 hours of effort by:

• Attending or reviewing all three live NSTA web seminars featuring NSTA Press Authors and the pedagogical discussions

• Participating in the professional learning community forum discussions (e.g., making posts, sharing resources and URLs, etc.)

• Creating a pedagogical learning goal related to the NSTA components for this MIT course using the free PD Plan and Portfolio tool in the NSTA Learning Center. Participants will generate a report that will be uploaded to the NSTA Learning Center during the last two weeks of the MIT course.
