Analysis of listening skills in English for

Palestine

Outline- What is listening ?

- What is the different between Listening & Hearing?

- The three stages.

- Why is listening a challenging task for ESL teachers and learners?

What is listening

Listening: Is receiving language

through the ears. Listening involves

identifying the sounds of speech and processing them into words and

sentences.

(1_4) Stage 1

Pre- listening:

In this stage there is no pre_ listening

question the picture play this role but

to put pre-listening question is good .

For example :

1- Grade 4 Unite 2, Period 1, Page10.

2-grade 3,unite 14,period 3,page32.

In term of pictures there are a lot of exercises in this stage combined with pictures. For example:

1-grade 1 , unit 2, period 1.2- grade 3 ,unit 16 ,period 5

Motivating & interesting listening

E4P includes a lot of an interesting & motivating Exercises we have two examples:

Grade 4 , unite 11 , period3Grade 4 , unite 16, period 5

The difficulty

Here the topic is difficult for this stage there & duty is to identify the country

Some activities are higher than Ss level .Example:- Grade 2 unit 16 period 3 exercise 2 track 65

We have a variation in listening questions such as :

and motivating than others .

There is no pre - listening

• It’s an interesting activity , because it belongs to the students needs , it speaks about problems and solutions .

Interesting & motivating

• Grade 12th , lesson 4 , page29

• In this example :-

• It provide students with pictures, as we mentioned before , it’s useful for students , it makes them mindful and attractive .

It’s very difficult and boring for students in 12th grade , because

students don’t like to speak about maps .

Why is listening a challenging task for ESL teachers and learners?

Solution problem

Put pre-listening question to make the lesson more simple & clear.

The lack of pre listening questions in the lower stage.

The teacher should try to give them key words and guidelines to clarify the task.

Some exercises are complex and higher than Ss level.

The teacher should be selective and tries to teach some of them briefly without a lot of detalis”general idea also to divide the taske & if the question not good the teacher can omitted it”.

Long tasks which confuse learners sometimes as they contain many skills.

the teacher can replace it or talk to the Curriculum centre to replace it by giving sth related to our culture & the

topic .

Some problem in introducing listening exercises :
