Dear Lions, Lioness, & Leos of 5M6,

Unlike so many District Governors before me, I have not had the opportunity to see many of your smiling faces as of yet. To say that the start of our 2020-2021 year has been unprecedented, would be an understatement at best. When we are faced with so many things beyond our control, it is easy to become discouraged. I know, because I have been there many times in the last few months. We all need to be lifted up in small ways, filled with hope, and encouraged to go beyond our own self-imposed limitations sometimes, whether it is learning a new technology or sharing a talent or skill or something else that may benefit yourself and/or your club.

My husband Marcos and I were invited out to the Midway Lions for their 80th Anniversary and Installation dinner at Mancini’s the other night. I really liked how they invited their charitable gambling employees to the event, and made them feel special. I was truly taken aback and left quite emotional by their president Lion Bob Brick and his reflections regarding the state of their club and Lions in general really – that their club and many of our clubs have endured some very hard times (World Wars, assassinations of a president, civil rights leader, the civil unrest of the 1960’s, the great recession of the 1970’s, the Cold War, etc. Through it all, our clubs and some of you who were there during those times, ensured we remained a vital community resource. He went on by saying, that we too, will not let this COVID pandemic impact us as we carry out our mission and make our communities stronger - in ending, pointing out all of the ways in which their Lions club has strengthened their volunteerism this past year.

I guess I must be spending too much time in isolation these days, because after he spoke I had to get up there and follow that, and all I could say at that point through a few tears was ‘Thank you everyone for lifting me up, and filling me with hope.” It was a wonderful evening, and I walked away that night re-assured by the positivity, and yes – all of the Harmony.

I want to thank all of you who have been reaching out to me, and those who have provided thoughtful responses and suggestions. I truly appreciate your cooperation and understanding despite the additional communications. Our District exists only because of your generous commitment of time and talent and we will get through these challenges together. As many of you are aware, the All-District Meeting that had been re-scheduled for September 24th had to be cancelled because we lost the venue. It has also been decided to hold 5 zone meetings on-line vs. in person in September as a way to connect with the clubs, etc. Finally, the decision was made by our Convention Committee to not go forward with signing a convention contract at the Bloomington Doubletree and instead look for a 1-day convention style venue. It was the right thing to do given the current feelings of the members, future uncertainties, as well as the financial losses the clubs have endured as a result of this pandemic. Our first priority needs to be the health and well-being of ourselves, our families and other Lions, Lioness, and Leos members as well as using what funds we do have to support those in our communities who need us most.

I would like to thank PDG Greg Langbehn for connecting us to his wonderful and generous friends. It is because of them that we have now secured a great venue for our 1-day convention on February 20th. We don’t have all the details yet, but as soon as the caterer is chosen etc., we will be able to send out the registration forms. It will be very reasonable. The flyer has been included on page 5 of this newsletter.

Districts 5M2, 5M5, 5M6 and 5M7 will join together at the 3 FMSC facilities in the Twin Cities Metro area. Our Mission is to pack food for the malnourished children of the World! The approach is simple: we hand-pack meals specifically formulated for undernourished children. FMSC meals are donated to partners worldwide and distributed every day in schools, orphanages, clinics and feeding programs to deliver hope!!

This packing experience will be a little different because of COVID-19. ALL volunteers will be required to wear masks for the duration of your session. All volunteers will have their temperature checked and go through a verbal symptom screening upon arrival. Please read the changes on the home page at: www.fmsc.org Also, please watch “What to expect when packing at FMSC – 2020”. This is on: https://youtu.be/PQ0zdFruo0s

Dear FMSC Supporter, The privacy and security of the personal information we maintain is of the utmost importance to Feed My Starving Children. We are writing with important information regarding a recent data security incident at Blackbaud, a third party service provider, which may have involved some of the information that you provided to Feed My Starving Children. Blackbaud is a software and service provider that is widely used for fundraising and alumni or donor engagement efforts at non-profits world-wide. Feed My Starving Children uses Blackbaud applications, and Blackbaud recently experienced an incident impacting their applications. We want to provide you with information about the incident and let you know that we continue to take significant measures to protect your information.

Upon learning of the issue, we commenced an immediate and thorough investigation. That investigation is still ongoing. As part of our investigation, in addition to demanding detailed information from Blackbaud about the nature and scope of the incident, we engaged cybersecurity professionals experienced in handing these types of incidents.

What Information Was Involved. We have determined that the information removed by the threat actor may have included demographic information, contact information, and/or philanthropic giving history, such as donation dates and amounts. Your Social Security number, financial account information and/or payment card information were not exposed, as they were properly encrypted.

We are fully committed to maintaining the privacy of information in our possession and have taken many precautions to safeguard it. Blackbaud has assured us that they closed the vulnerability that allowed the incident and that they are enhancing their security controls and conducting ongoing efforts against incidents like this in the future. We continually evaluate and modify our practices, and those of our third party service providers, to enhance the security and privacy of your information.

Update to Lions Clubs of the Coalition

Falcon Heights-Lauderdale Lions, Mounds View Lions, New Brighton Lions, North Suburban Evening Lions, Roseville Lions, St. Paul North Ramsey 500 Lions,

Shoreview/Arden Hills Lions

Here are the highlights.

● Overall fundraising has reached $65,241.55. This includes checks and transfers from individuals, clubs, grants,

donations through the GiveMN.org site, and an initial payment from Run/Walk site.

● The Virtual Run/Walk, as of 7/24/20, has achieved 72 Registrations ($1181), 32 Donations ($2075), and 9 Sponsors

($6750) for a total income of $10,006. Of that amount $5860 has been transferred and is included in the overall fundraising total above. To register, contribute, or check out our Sponsors go to https://www.suburbanramseycoalition.org/events

● On July 10 we delivered 150 cloth isolation gowns to the grateful staff of Ramsey County Care Center, making a total of

200 which were created by our dedicated Volunteers. For more on this go to https://www.suburbanramseycoalition.org/ and see the News Feed, Volunteer Page, and Thankyou Page.

● Five more grants have been awarded since the last Update, making a total of eight thus far. The latest recipients are

Quincy House, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, The Sheridan Story, Community Partners with Youth, and Aeon. For the details of these awards go to https:// www.suburbanramseycoalition.org/grants-awarded Our grants to non-profits serving local needs has now reached $50,000. We have been recognized by both elected and staff officials in Ramsey County for our speed, efficiency and effectiveness in responding to the needs presented to us.

● Progress continues on developing a Classic Car Raffle. A plan will be presented to the Steering Committee, hopefully

within two weeks.

● Efforts continue to expand the Coalition’s impact through improved Communication and Marketing to a greatly

expanded audience. There is a plan, but help is needed to implement it. Volunteer to help!

● Ideas for future Events need to be collected and put forward for exploration. Again, Volunteer! We do not want our

momentum to be slowed for lack of planning for the future.

● Volunteer Activities need to be made available to Coalition Members, friends, and the public at large. Offering these

opportunities is the surest way to engage more folks in our mission. Our role is to make contact with those who utilize volunteers, catalog the opportunities, publish them, and maintain a current list. Much of this has been done by others, individually. Our task is to compile, maintain, offer, and encourage the Volunteer Opportunities which are currently available.

We are 179 Lions in 7 clubs serving 2 school districts. We are part of a unique coalition of 15 service clubs and community foundations. We are having an impact in our communities! We are what others wish they could be. My sincere hope is that each Lion in our group will personally experience the joy and satisfaction that comes with contributing to this effort. It feels really good. Everyone can have that feeling simply by being informed and engaged with the work of the Coalition. This is the essence of what we do as Lions. We Serve

Thank You,

Lion Curt

Lions Clubs Teaming up to aid in treating Parkinson’s Disease

Two Lions Clubs in the SW metro are dealing with members with Parkinson’s Disease. Steve Knudsen of the Burnsville Lions and Ger Danielson of the Prior Lake club teamed up in a Parkinson’s walk this spring with donations in excess of $5,000. This past month an additional donation of $5,000 was given by the Burnsville club. Steve Knudsen from the Burnsville Lions has been dealing with Parkinson’s for 13 years and is very active in the Parkinson’s community. Because he’s always thinking about people who are worse off than he is, Steve and Ger facilitate a support group for over 30 Parkinson’s patients and caregivers in the Burnsville area.

The worldwide Covid-19 pandemic has paused many of the National Parkinson’s Disease Foundation programs and services, affecting thousands of people. This includes exercise groups, support groups, educational classes, and more programs that can help improve a Parkinson’s patient’s quality of life. These services are generally not covered by medical insurance and are dependent on philanthropy. To complicate matters have been the cancellation of several major fund raisers resulting in a loss of around $150,000.

These funds are needed to continue to fund research grants. The end results are delays in testing new medications, learning more about Parkinson’s Disease, and even finding a cure.

One million Americans are living with Parkinson’s, with 60,000 people newly diagnosed each year. The Parkinson’s Foundation is the nation’s leading community for people living with Parkinson’s, those who love them, and those who are working to end the disease. Improving care, advancing research towards a cure and providing necessary education on PD are pillars of the Foundation’s mission. Right now, the Lions have provided necessary support to two (2) Foundations. They are the National Parkinson’s Foundation and Park Nicolet (Struthers Parkinson’s Center) Foundation.

“At the Parkinson’s Foundation, our mission is to make life better for people with Parkinson’s disease by improving care and advancing research toward a cure. In everything we do, we build on the energy, experience and passion of our global Parkinson's community. Through the support of the Burnsville and Prior Lake Lions Clubs we are able to further our mission,” said Jennifer Hendrickson, Development Director.
