Lincoln High School
Symphonic Band Auditions 2019-2020 School Year
Audition information:
To audition for the Lincoln High School Symphonic Band, every student should be prepared to play the material listed
below. This material will be played live.
1. The audition etude for your instrument.
o Start and Stop points are marked on the etude itself.
o The audition music can be collected from the Lincoln HS Band room, the Trojan Band website
( https://www.leonschools.net/lincolnband ), emails that have been sent, or if you are a middle school
student, from your director.
2. All 12 major scales in 3 minutes or less.
o Scales should follow the Florida Bandmasters Association scale requirement for this past school year.
Circle of fourths. FBA rhythm pattern. See: http://fba.flmusiced.org/all-state/audition-requirements/
o Scales should start on Concert G and move around the Circle of 4ths ending on Concert D.
o Scales may be played from reading sheet music, but more points will be given if scales are memorized.
o An octave suggestion table has been included below.
It is not required that all scales be performed with those exact octaves. You may play more or
less octaves. However, more octaves (played successfully) will create a higher score.
o Scales may be performed outside of the 3 minute mark, but they will not be graded.
3. The chromatic scale on your instrument, full range.
o Students should play the chromatic scale full range: from their lowest note to their highest note.
(You may use the FBA All-State chromatic scale requirement as a suggestion.)
o Students must maintain a steady tempo and rhythm.
o This scale is not a part of the 3 minute time limit for major scales.
4. Students will be asked to sight-read.
o Students will be given 30 seconds to view the new material and then will be asked to play.
5. Students will be asked to answer a few verbal questions.
o These may include the following:
Counting (rhythm) exercises: one in a compound meter, one in a simple meter
Transposition of their instrument (if the instrument is not concert pitch)
Defining commonly used musical vocabulary

“Do I have to audition to be in the band program?”
Current 9-11th grade students
Yes and no: No, you do not have to audition to stay in band. However, you must complete the audition as a part of your
class grade. That being said, it should be a goal for all students to work hard on this material – not just in the interest of
making Symphonic Band, but also in the interest of personal improvement.
Students that are currently in Symphonic Band: You are not guaranteed placement into this ensemble based on your
current placement. You will be adjudicated on the same level as every other student.
Current 8th graders
You do not have to complete an audition to be in the band program. Students who want to be in band but do not complete
an audition will automatically be placed in the Concert Band (woodwinds this year were in 4th period, brass were in 6th).
Percussion Students
The need for percussion students will be determined based on the literature the Symphonic Band plays. Some band pieces
require just one or two percussionists, while other pieces require a large number of percussionists. Students in the band
program will be placed accordingly for performances throughout the year. All Percussion students will be enrolled in
the percussion class. Auditions for marching band percussion (drumline and front ensemble) happen separately from
these Symphonic Band auditions.
